Winter and the holiday seasons were some of the craziest times of year around the Sugar Shack. People who couldn't bake or cook came in and bought all the pies to impress their relatives at Thanksgiving and Christmas. People frolicked in to get out of the wet cold that blew in and burry themselves in sweet treats and coffee. The winter season also meant that Savannah’s sports calmed down and so did a lot of the after school activities and clubs. Everyone was traveling and in/out of school, so there weren’t as many meetings. The only thing that she was planning was Winter Homecoming, Basketball Games, and Prom in Spring. So while things were slow, relatively saying in Savannah’s life, she was picking up extra hours at the Sugar Shack.
Savannah was doing all the frosting’s and decorating on cupcakes today. They had a huge order for a business in the town that was celebrating their CEO’s retirement. So she was working overtime, attempting to decorate and frost five different flavors or cupcakes that screamed congratulations on your future of cruises, convertibles, and a beach house on Malibu. She swirled peanut butter frosting onto dark chocolate cupcakes, moving quickly over the tray. Her brunette hair was tucked up into a messy bun on top of her hair, and a pink apron was dotted with food coloring, powdered sugar, and frosting. A white long sleeve shit was rolled up her forearms, and a pair of faded blue jeans were tucked into a pair of gray UGG boots.
She sung along quietly to Train as it blasted in the back kitchen. Other workers rolled in and out carrying pies, trays of cookies and pastries to the display case for customers to gorge themselves with. She loved the bakery and loved baking. She never got tired of eating raw cookie dough and sampling new cake batters and frosting flavors. It was a calming place to be, and she worked among older women who had their own gossip and worries about the world. It was her place to escape from high school drama, especially Max drama. Ever since the football fight, everyone seemed to be leaving Addison. Her best friend Zach was gone, Lucas left to a treatment facility, Mel and Dylan moved. The whole entire band of best friends had been disbanded, so when she wasn’t at school she came to the Shack to escape reality.
“We should really change this ruckus to Christmas music at some point.. It’s getting close to the Holidays!” Ruth said as she brought another batch of cooled cupcakes to Savannah’s station. ”Ruth, there is an unspoken rule about playing Christmas music before Thanksgiving.. I’m pretty sure of that,” Savannah joked pushing the frosted cupcakes back and accepting the new tray of unfrosted cupcakes in front of her. Savannah felt Ruth’s hand grab her arm as she went to continue frosting. She looked beside her and handed her the frosting. ”Honey, go grab lunch or something.. Take a break,” Ruth said, taking the frosting bag and continuing to do Savannah’s work. Savannah untied her apron, pulling it over her head, and hanging it on a rack.
Savannah walked out to the front, clocking out and grabbing a cup of chai tea from the machine. She went to a table nestled in a comfy corner and grabbed a local paper, reading the gossip and news from around Addison. She took a sip of her Chai, making a face and quickly setting it down. ”Ouch! Holy cow!” she squeaked, wiping her mouth of the burning hot liquid. ”We need to turn that down,” she mumbled putting her head down as her cheeks flushed red when she noticed the heads turning to stare at her. She groaned, resting her forehead on her forearms to hide herself from more embarrassment. This year was NOT Savannah’s year.

Lately, Ryder's luck had not been so good in the friend department. It had gone a little south when Zach had decided that Max wasn't allowed to sleep with Savannah and took it out on him in the middle of a football game, and Dylan then took it out on Zach... at which point Max quit, and Zach quit, and then Ryder decided to let Dylan know that if Dylan hit Zach again he'd have something to say about it. At that point, Dylan turned on Ryder and, well, it turned into a brawl. After the coach got them separated, Ryder walked out on the team. He was fairly sure Dylan quit too, which left only Jason, Blaze, and a few freshman. A team that was hardly promising. He had a feeling that Jason probably wasn't too pleased with him over the whole thing either, so he'd pretty well done in his entire crowd of friends... except for the females. The girls didn't get caught up in all of the football drama, which he was certainly grateful for. And of course there was always Watson, the ever faithful penguin who rarely left his side.
He was wandering around town on his day off from work at the zoo, followed faithfully by his waddling partner. He was about to pass by the bakery, but through the window he spotted one, Savannah Hayes, just sitting down, appearing to have just gotten off her shift. He stopped in his tracks, turned back around, and opened the door, waiting a moment or two for Watson to make it through the door, considering his legs were significantly shorter than Ryders making him significantly slower. Once the penguin had entered the premises, a sight which most people had grown accustomed to in the small town and shop owners had stopped protesting to, he strode over in Savannah's direction and promptly sat in the seat across from her at the table, pulling the paper out of her hands.
"You don't really want to read that, do you?" he asked, shooting her a grin. "I'm sure they haven't written about you killing the Pillsbury Dough Boy just yet." he added, motioning to the bits of frosting here and there that had managed to get around her apron and now dotted her clothing. "Besides, you should probably be reading the "caution: hot" words on your cup and not the gossip column." Savannah was really an easy target for teasing. She was too... good to not be teased. Even if she wasn't perfect, she was still probably the closest thing to it among all of them. On top of that, she was one of his best friends, and guys that best friends that were girls, couldn't resist teasing their girl friends. |

Savannah had really reclused into work right after she attempted to talk to Max after the football game. What he had said to her, even though only three words, had been really hurtful. She didn’t stick around that long after that, tears welled up in her eyes and she ran the opposite direction before Zach really answered her own question of why in the world he would do that. She hadn’t really talked to Zach either until after he moved. They had texted a couple times, but it was really only updates on stuff and really more things their moms wanted them to tell each other. That was really all and she didn’t talk to Mel or Avery anymore and rarely Penny, which she really had no reason why they weren’t that close anymore either. They didn’t do anything to each other, it was just male ‘T’ and they were all paying the consequences.. Well actually it was a little more than that and Savannah really felt like it was all her fault.
On the plus side of all this mess, she head that Dylan was coming back and she would have another very close friend in her grips. Ryder seemed to be the only one that still talked to her and they still sat next to each other and used each other as project partners. He seemed to be the only one she still talked to and hung out with on a regular basis, because she would show up and volunteer at the zoo while sports season was on a stand still. Thank god track and basketball started up after the break! She would be back to her two-a-days and be back to normal too busy for anything Savannah, planning prom and the spring homecoming. That was for sure going to help get her out of her slump. Still she couldn’t help but stare at her phone and think about texting Max a really big “I’m Sorry”. She was trying to convince herself that god had a plan and would work this all out, but she was starting to doubt that more and more the more alone she felt.
Savannah was deep in reading the gossip of the town, because it seemed that other peoples lives were more publicly screwed up than hers. It was like reading a tabloid only she knew some of the people. Seriously, who lives in a town that has their own gossip forum AND horse show gossip? That’s right.. Addison. Thank you random writer for spying on everyone and making it public knowledge. Savannah broke her attention from the paper, looking up as she was lightly teased by Ryder. A smile came across her lips, her cheeks turning a flush pink as he poked at her inability to read the “Caution: Hot” sign on the paper of the cup. ”Come on, don’t you want to know who just bought a new horse from who, and what “Young Social Elite Is Hooking Up With Someone From The Wrong Side of the Tracks?”, she joked, closing the paper and folding it in front of her.
”I didn’t think it was going to be that hot, but I am pretty sure I just burnt all my taste buds off. she muttered, sticking her tongue out to show him the damage, which was just a red mark on her tongue. Savannah, always one for the dramatics. ”We have a big cupcake order due and I have been frosting like a mad man. I’m almost done but I want to get them done by tonight.. We have some extra red velvet. Want one?” she asked, setting her cup down and peaking around the table to spot Watson. It always made her smile when the penguin followed Ryder around, it was like something out of a Disney movie. ”What are you doing here?” she asked, tearing at a corner of the news paper as she waited for her coffee to cool.
