The highlight of Mason's day was always going out to see his horses. His mare Blue and his colt Buster. He kept Buster seperated from her in his own smaller pasture, because he was learning how to behave again. He was thirteen months old and at that point he should know to stop running when the halter came out. He always did it in play though, Mason knew that. He let him get away with way too much as a baby. He grew up raising horses, but he didn't work much with the babies. But when he unknowingly purchased Blue pregnant and ended up with Buster, it was all his own. It was all his own doing and his job to make sure the colt turned out all right. He was doing great with most of his training, like lounging and had even worn the saddle a couple of times. Mason had yet to get on him because he was pretty small for his age.
He missed his old horses. He missed Wyoming. He missed his friends. He missed everything before his life changed. He used to be Carter Stone, popular back in his high school. He had big dreams. He wanted to rodeo and take his horses far in life. But since his father was killed and he and his mother where taken into the witness protection program, everything changed. He was just glad he found Crossfire Farms. Things where starting to get a little bit more normal, and it was a lot more normal to tell people his name was Mason Hale now instead. It just sounded right. Nobody had called him Carter in two years, and things where looking up. He was going to school to become an equine vet, he had two great horses, a job at the animal shelter, and he was making friends here.
He had his hood up over his head as he walked through the barn and towards Busters pasture. It was cold out and there was a light layer of frost on the ground. He had two carrots in the pocket of his sweatshirt to give to Buster when the colt came up to him. The bay roan was kind of going through his gangly awkward stage at the moment, and he was fuzzy for winter. Mason wouldn't ever call him ugly, but he wasn't the prettiest thing in the winter. He walked past Blue's stall and the roan mare stuck her head out and he petted her. "How's my pretty girl doing this mornin' huh? Maybe we'll saddle up and go for a trail ride down to the river today. Sounds like fun doesn't it?" He baby talked to her, before slipping one of the carrots from his pocket. Her ears perked up and she crunched it happily before he walked off.
" Oh Buster! Look what I got for you!" He said, smiling and waving the carrot as he walked out to the colt's pasture. His head lifted and ears shot forward, sending a whinny as he trotted over towards the gate. Oh yes, food was certainly a way to the little colts heart. "That's my good boy." Mason cooed as he opened the gate, having to shove the colt back a little. " Personal space dude. Personal space!" He laughed a little as the colt pushed into him. It was cute now, but three years from now it wouldn't be. He grabbed the red rope halter off the fence and slipped it over the colts head before breaking the carrot in half and handing him half. He crunched it happily as Mason walked around to pet the colts back. "I just want you to get a little bit bigger so I can get on you..." He said, sighing a little before walking back to the colts head and leading him out of the small paddock and into the bigger pasture. He turned him out daily with the other geldings so he could play, and he usually came in fine when the other horses did.

Clouds of condensation emerged from Kalina's lips as she made her way into the barn. Heads popped out of stalls eagerly, everyone excited to stretch their legs. Moving down the isles, she came to her blue roan gelding, Sam. He was the most ornery of her horses, the one most likely to get distracted and drag Kalina along for the ride. She always brought Sam out first- if any of Kalina's other horses left the barn first, Sam would throw a hissy fit.
Grabbing the black halter off the hook, Kalina quickly affixed it to the stocky gelding's head before leading him out of the stall. He was dusty and covered in shavings, which made Kalina roll her eyes. She hated her horses being dirty, and figured she could spare a few minutes to groom him. Hooking Sam to the crossties and grabbing her grooming bag, Kalina began working feverishly with a curry comb. Displacing all the dirt and shavings, she easily brushed it off with a body brush.
After brushing the shavings out of his tail and picking out his hooves, Kalina hooked a lead to the big gelding's halter. Next to her five-foot-two stature, the fifteen hand tall horse looked massive. She lead him from the barn, fighting to control him as he gained excitement. Sam was the kind of horse that thrived on being outside and having social interaction. Any other horse he saw, had to be his new friend. Sam's ears pricked forward and Kalina groaned inwardly- a yearling and a young man, about her age. Taking in the boys stature, Kalina froze- he was built just like Carter.
Still struggling with Sam, the petite girl dug her heels into the dirt to keep him from bolting, but he paid her no mind. He was dead set on making a new friend. Letting out a groan and not wanting to fall, Kalina began sprinting along side her horse. They both moved seamlessly to the fence where Sam snorted contentedly and began grazing. Kalina's eyes darted to the boy as she muttered, "Sorry. He likes making friends." As her eyes met the boy's, she felt her heart stop in her chest. She felt as if everything she'd ever wanted had come true.
"Carter?" [/blockquote]

Out of his two horses, Mason would admit that Buster was his favorite. He loved Blue, but she had no spunk. For a ten year old mare, she acted like she was probably thirty. She was a perfect western pleasure show horse, but she had no get up and go. Mason knew that Buster was going to be a little spit fire once he started riding him. He couldn't wait until the colt got bigger. He figured that right after winter ended he would at least get on his back. Maybe not move or do anything, but at least get on his back. Mason wasn't too heavy, but he was tall. He just hoped that Buster would get big enough for him. But also, most reining horses were not very tall, and he wanted Buster to be a reining horse.
The colt loved other horses, so when another horse came towards him, he flagged his tail and squeeled, perking his ears forward and swiveling his head to look at the horse who was coming towards him - seemingly dragging his owner behind him. "Whoa whoa -" He started, holding a hand out to make sure the horse wouldn't take off, before feeling his heart nearly drop to his knee's. His mouth went dry and his head started to hurt. Oh no no no this can't be happening.... He didn't look at her, he couldn't bare to. He caught a glympse and that was all he needed to know his past was coming back. He rested a hand on Buster's back, the colt still staring excitedly back at the gelding.
" Carter? "
That name. He hadn't heard that name in two years. At least not directed towards him. He caught her eyes and found he couldn't tear his gaze away from hers. Kalina? Why is she here? He couldn't reveal in any way that he knew her. Anybody knowing about his past was causing danger. " I uh. Uhm N-N..." He couldn't talk, his tongue was tied. He pulled his hazel eyes away from hers and blinked a few times, taking a deep breath. " Sorry I think you h-have the wrong person. My name is.. Mason. Mason Stone.... Hale! Mason Hale!" The panic in his chest rose as he blurted out his old last name. He leveled his gaze with hers for a moment before finding trouble looking her in the eye again. " I should uh. I should go." He muttered, trying to pull Buster away from the other gelding.

Kalina nearly broke into tears when she stared into Carter's eyes. Those eyes held her heart- they made the world better. Now he was here in front of her... and denying it. Kalina had known him since they were young, and would be able to pick him out of a crowd easily. Every part of him was etched into her mind, a symbol of the happiness she had before. He was her everything, her Superman, and he left her, all alone.
"Carter, wait. Please." Kalina climbed the fence and jumped down, nearly pinning him against his horse like she had when they were younger. She knew Sam wouldn't go anywhere with the yearling as a distraction, and her crystal blue eyes focused on Carter- no, Mason's, brilliant hazel eyes. Her heart ached and tears welled up in her eyes that she angrily pushed away. At first, she didn't say anything, just took him in, before giving into the tears. She wanted nothing more but for him to wrap himself around her and make her feel like she had before.
Still holding his gaze, Kalina could feel every hot tear streaking down her cheek. Her chin wobbled, and she bit her lip in an attempt to steady it. She wanted to reach out and touch him, to know that he was real, that she wasn't dreaming. That the mixed emotions she was feeling were warranted. She finally let out a quiet sob before looking him in the eyes and whispering, "Why did you leave me alone, Carter?"

One thing Mason could not take was tears. Anybodies tears. He hated to see people upset. He hated to see people cry. It made him feel terrible. It made him feel like it was his fault. Everything was his fault. It was. Her tears right now. He just wanted to wrap his arms around her and hug her and relinquish the reunion that was happening right now. To brush his fingers through her long blonde hair and stare into her beautiful blue eyes. He wanted nothing more than that, but he couldn't. It was in the rules. His life had rules now. Rules that he had to follow or he would be uprooted and moved again.
And then she pinned him against his horse. The yearling pinned his ears for a moment and turned his head to look at them but he didn't move. He wasn't too badly behaved of a horse. Masons heart was racing as he looked at her, the blood coursing through his veins like somebody had lit a fire in them. A lump rose up in his throat and he swallowed it back as he looked at her. He had to be dreaming, he knew he had to be dreaming. This wasn't making any sense. He had moved far away, why would she be here? There was no way this was real. His past was coming back around to haunt him. Not that she was haunting, but she was here. Like a ghost. "I am... I am. Not. Carter." He said, his voice sounding more stern than before. He had to get it through her head that he wasn't. She couldn't know.
" I.. I don't know who you are. Or who.. Carter is. Please stop calling me that." She asked why he left. What more could he say? "My father was killed and he was practicaly a secret agent so my mother and I are in the witness protection program so we came here." No that wouldn't do. He couldn't tell her that. How many other people would find out? The government found out he told anybody and they would be uprooted again. " P.. Please ... don't cry.. Please..." The sternness in his voice was gone as a slight quiver entered his voice. " Theres... theres no need to cry..." He wanted to reach out and hug her, but that would be weird wouldn't it? They where supposed to be total strangers. She was no longer his best friend, right? She couldn't be. Not in these times.

Kalina's heart was breaking. Carter was right in front of her.. and pretended he didn't know her. Her sobs started to intensify. Her whole body ached with the need to hold him in her arms. She was glad for the sweater she had on- Texas winters weren't terrible for her, but it covered up the gashes on the insides of her wrists. She wanted nothing but him, nothing but to feel like he actually cared for her. She felt sick as his voice began to melt, and covered her face and began to sob.
"You're a liar." The words came out hushed, as she tried not to spook the yearling. "I've waited for two years for some sign from you that you missed me. That you even remembered I existed. I've cried myself to sleep because I missed you so bad. And look," her voice wavered. Taking a deep breath, she looked him straight in the eyes. "Apparently you didn't." Her knees went weak as she almost collapsed to the ground. The only thing that even gave her a glimmer of happiness, and he was stomping it to a pulp in front of her eyes.
Kalina's vision was blurry as the tears built up too quickly then they could fall. She angrily whipped the tears away, feeling her face turning red with emotion. "Sorry I never mattered." Stuffing her foot onto the first board of the fence, she easily pulled herself up, dropping down on the other side and snatching up Sam's lead rope, groaning as he began to pretend he was afraid. Lina dropped the lead, letting Sam return to the colt as the petite blonde fell to her knees, face in hands, sobbing.

"You're a liar."
The words stung like a thousand bee's right to the throat. Which wasn't good since he was highly allergic to bee stings. Actually, he was highly allergic to a lot of things, but bee's where one of the worst. Seeing her so upset was making his heart break. His lips where parted slightly, trying to steady down the panicky racing of his heart. Now she was crying. Sobbing, in fact. And his heart was shattering. He hated seeing people cry - esspecially her. He was causing this. He was causing this steady stream of tears down her cheeks. He wanted to wipe her tears away, to hold her and apologize. but he couldn't... he knew he couldn't.
"K- Hey. Wait." He said, as she climbed over the fence. And then her horse spooked and came back to Buster, and he just tossed the lead rope over the colts back and took a deep breath as he climbed over the fence. He knew he shouldn't do this but his guilt was overwhelming. The lump was in his throat still as he walked over to her. The site was killing him, literally ripping his still beating heart from his chest. He walked over and stood in front of her for a moment, before sinking to his knees in front of her.
" Kalina. " He spoke steadily, before hesitantly reaching out and placing two fingers under her chin and raising her gaze to meet his. "You... you did matter. You do matter." His voice was quiet, and probably hardly audible. The small nickers from his colt where barely audible since his heart was pounding so loudly in his ears he could hardly hear himself talk. "I didn't want to leave. But please, don't call me Carter." Saying this was dangerous in itself, but he couldn't stand to just see her here crying. "My name is Mason." He said, holding her gaze and nodding, as if to enforce the fact. "And I grew up in Lousiana before moving here." That was the story he had to tell. The story the government had given him. " So please... please..." He said, his eyes glazing over slightly as he looked at her. "Please don't call me Carter."

Kalina sensed Carter sinking to his knees in front of her and held her breath. Hearing her name from his lips again, for the first time in two years, made the tears fall heavier. Feeling his fingers under her chin nearly broke her heart as she stared into his eyes, her face drenched in water and eyes red and puffy. As he explained his story, she sat, dumbfounded. She didn't care what she had to call him as long as he was there. But he told her that she mattered. It had been so long since she'd felt needed, felt loved, that she couldn't help herself.
She threw herself into his arms.
Her petite frame could hardly move him, but she buried her face in his chest and began sobbing. He still smelled of the same deodorant and aftershave, mixed with Downy. She was nearly hyperventilating with the amount of emotions she was feeling, and she wrapped her arms around him tightly. She'd missed him so much, it physically hurt. She'd been locked in her room for most of the time since he left, and the only reason she was here now was because her parent's had thought Texas would be good for her. And now everything she needed was in her arms.
"I've missed you so much." The words were barely distinguishable through her sobs as she curled up between his legs, her face still buried in his chest. She gently grabbed one of his hands, tracing his fingers, spotting little scars she remembered being there when he got. He was real, he was in her arms, and she was coming to grips with this.
"I missed you, Mason."

He had always had trouble with words. But that had always come easy around Kalina. Always. Two years of seperation wasn't going to make that much of a difference, not now. Not anymore. She was here and she had wrapped her arms around him, burying her head into his chest. He responded by wrapping his arms around her, inhaling deeply to take in her familar natural scent. He exhaled loudly, closing his eyes and pulling her closer into him if that was even possible. "Shh. Kal... It's okay." He wanted to be comforting. He wanted to dry her tears, to make it all stop. "You're okay now..."
He wished he didn't have to leave. He knew he had left half of his heart back in Wyoming when he left. With her, and with his horses. There was a small part of him he thought he would never get back, until he came here and found Blue and got Buster from her. But he was still never fully complete. He knew he wouldn't ever be again. And then Kalina was here now, and his heart was bursting with emotion. It was impossible to contain as he squeezed his eyes shut, hugging her into him and brushing his fingers through his hair as a bit of moisture squeezed it's way from his tear ducts. He wasn't going to cry, at least he told himself that, but he could always blame it on the allergies.
" I've missed you too." He whispered, sighing loudly and opening his eyes, pulling away from her a little to look her. He hardly felt the frost that was melting on his jeans and onto his skin. " We should uh, we should get.. off the ground." He said, smiling softly at her, his eyes slightly red from the emotion, as he slowly pulled away from her and stood up, glancing over to see Buster attempting to groom her gelding. What a kind colt. He held his hand out to her to help her up. "You uh - You like to take a walk with me?" He said, swallowing back the lump in his throat again.

Kalina felt her heart bursting as Mason wrapped himself around her. She didn't feel the damp cold in her jeans, or the stinging as the cuts on her arms scraped against the inside of her sweatshirt. She felt him, true and real, in her arms, and her heart about exploded with the joy of it all. When he stood, smiling at her, Lina's heart melted. A big, dumb smile came to her lips as she stood, trying to wipe the tears from her face and fix her disheveled hair at the same time.
Knowing Mason wouldn't care about how she looked, she let her hands drop down to her sides. The cool air created condensation between the two as she gently stepped closer to him, resting her hand right above his heart. As he asked about going for a walk, a small smile came to her plump lips. "I have to put my horses in the pasture first. Let me get Sam up there, and then would you mind helping me bring the other two out?" A slight teasing look appeared on her lips as she thought about Bronco, and wondered if Mason would even recognize his old colt.
Gently kissing Mason's cheek, Kalina jogged up to Sam and slowly grabbed his lead. Nickering a goodbye to his new friend, he followed Lina quietly, not even giving her a fuss as she released him in the pen. Making sure to lock the gate behind her, she walked past Mason, motioning for him to follow. Once they reached the barn, she shoved open Reach's door and placed the turquoise halter on his head. She clipped his lead on, flipping the lead over his neck and wandering to the other stall.
Taking a deep breath as she slid the rope halter over Bronco's head, the gelding snorted contentedly. He gently lipped at her sweater, and she smiled, kissing his forehead and leading him from the stall. He was stocky, still built like a stud and froze in place when he saw Mason. "Mind taking Bronco up for me?" Her face gave away the tease in her voice as she gently handed Mason his old horse's lead.

Mason had a few relationships before. None that really meant much. His most recent girlfriend he had broken up with three months previous. They had nothing in common. He met her at the college and she didn't even like horses. In fact, he couldn't even get her near one. He wasn't into flings or one night stands, he was into long term relationships. He hadn't ever had a real meaningful one. He wasn't a virgin, but he had only 'been with' two girls, both when he was drunk and both since he had come to Addison. Yeah he was only eighteen and it wasn't legal for him to drink but that didn't mean that ninety percent of the underage popular hadn't at least tried it.
When she placed her hand above his heart, he couldn't help but let the small hint of a smile turn into a bit bigger one as he placed his hand over hers. "I would love to help you bring your horses out. I have to throw Buster out too." He said, looking over at his strangely smitten colt. He grabbed the yearlings lead rope and the roan followed along willingly. He couldn't help but laugh lightly as she kissed his cheek. He felt like he was sixteen again. Before all the dramatics happened. Before everything went so very wrong.
After putting his colt out in the pasture he followed her to the barn, his hands shoved into the pockets of his sweatshirt. He could feel the chill on the knee's of his jeans now as he walked but he didn't let it bother him too much. "Pretty horse." He said as she went into Reach's stall. He was a fan of quarter horses, of course. He had raised them his whole life. Quarter horses and paints where all he had ever owned and all he really enjoyed to ride. He would have loved to have his old horses back. The colts he broke, the studs, the broodmares. He missed every single one of the horses he had back in Wyoming. Who where all widely dispersed now.
When she went to get her other horse, he stood patiently, glancing around. He could see Blue poking her head out of her stall down on the other end, eyeing him as if she was waiting for him to bring her more treats. "Sure, I'll -" His smile faded for a moment and he froze as she led Bronco out of the stall and looked back at the horse for a moment. "Holy shit, is this...?" He laughed and smiled broadly as he walked over and took the horses lead rope. "Damn he's gotten huge. How did you end up with him?" The smile on his face wouldn't go away now as he looked at her, reaching up and rubbing the horses head. "Damn..." Everything seemed to be falling into place. That wasn't good though. It wasn't. How could he keep being Mason if Carter's life was coming back? "How ya doin' boy? I've missed you..." He cooed, looking up at the horse.

Watching Mason's reaction to Bronco brought a big smile to Kalina's face. The 14.3 hand Quarter Horse gelding had the muscle tone of a stud and the temperament of a kitten. Though she'd never admit it, Bronco was Kalina's favorite of her horses, due to his personality.. and who had broken him. "After you guys moved there was a sale." Lina's lips pursed for a moment. "My daddy knew how much it killed me to have you gone, and when he came home with Bronco..." She bit her plump lower lip, looking up at Mason through heavy lids. Lina took a step forward, her lips close to his ear and whispered, "No matter who you pretend to be, you're Carter. You don't have to flaunt it, but don't forget it."
Gently pulling back, a small smile formed on Kalina's lips as she grabbed Reach's lead rope. The seven year old gelding snorted in eagerness, and followed exactly two steps behind Kalina. A smile was on her face, but she hid it by making sure she walked ahead of Mason. She didn't know how to feel. Euphoric. Amazed. The dizzying emotions had her head in excruciating pain, but she kept walking, opening the gate and releasing Reach and waiting for Mason to do the same with Bronco.
"Where do you wanna walk to?" Lina finally realized her teeth were starting to chatter, the whole butt of her jeans soaked through. Crossing her arms over her chest, she tried to hide it with a smile, but it was pretty obvious. But she didn't want to go home and change. She didn't want to meet up with him later. She wanted Mason, and only Mason, and to be with him until everything felt okay. Kalina had never even had a boyfriend- she knew from the day she met Car-Mason, that she was truly and madly in love with him. Looking at him now, she knew that'd never changed.

Mason grew up with a very similar line of quarter horses. He loved them all. Doc Bar was ever present throughout much of the horses lineage back at his old ranch. He had grown rather attatched to them and the Poco Bueno line. Which was why he bought Blue so quickly. He only wished she had a bit more energy. She hardly wanted to pick up a lope. And he missed being able to rope and go to gaming shows just for the hell of it. He could with many of his old horses, and while he loved Blue, he just was starting to like how little spunk she had. She was great at western pleasure, which was odd considering how the Bueno lines usually produced great speed and cow horses. But, she was a good horse none the less. Buster was going to be phenomenal though.
"A sale?" He repeated, feeling his heart sink a little. While he figured that was what happened, it hurt to know it. All of his horses, all of his projects and hopes and dreams where scattered to god knows where now. "Well atleast I know this one ended up in good hands." A faint chuckle crossed his lips as he patted the neck of the thick gelding. Bronco had always been one of his favorites. By far one of the hardest to break colt's he had ever encountered, which was where he ended up with his name. At her words however as she whispered, he froze up a little. "No, Kal. Really. I have to forget it." He spoke back, giving her a somewhat stern eye. He couldn't remember, that would be way too dangerous. He didn't want to have to move again. Not now.
He followed behind her with Bronco, stroking the geldings neck as he did so. He missed this, the familiarity. it felt like old times, like things where going to get better. Or worse, if he thought of the consequences. He couldn't figure out how it was that she found him here, however. Not that she had been looking, but the thought was still provoking. He let bronco off his lead and patted him one more time as he trotted off with her other gelding. "Uhm. I'm not sure. Let's just... walk until we find somewhere I suppose." He flashed her a bright smile and held out his arm for her to take while they walked. He was a friendly person so there was nothing wrong with the gesture, right? He waited for her before starting to walk around the outside of the pasture, up a small hill. He wasn't sure where they where going but he figured he would know when they got there.

Gently taking Mason's arm, Kalina gave a slight smile through her slightly chattery teeth. She hated the cold, which was why she moved to Texas- where it was still cold. Her thin sweatshirt did little to protect her from the chill, and she wrapped her free arm around herself. She hadn't realized quite how damp her pants were until she started moving around. The denim was icy with every move she made, and she mentally cursed herself for not wearing long johns.
Spotting a small area that hadn't been quite as massacred by snow, Lina gently led Mason to it. Her crystal blue eyes shimmered in the early morning light as she sank down into the dirt. Leaning back against one of the few large trees in the paddock, Lina gently patted the ground next to herself for Mason. When he sat, Kalina couldn't resist gently resting her head on his shoulder. She missed the familiarity of him. All of him.
"I don't know what you're running from." Her voice came out a hushed whisper. "You don't have to tell me. Just please... please don't leave me again. You're my best friend and I need you." Her eyes shone as she looked into his. "You don't know how much a need you." Looking away sharply, Kalina began toying with the zipper on her sweatshirt, hoping he didn't catch the double meaning to what she'd said. She needed him, as her best friend, to be there. But she also needed him- his quirkiness, his moods, everything. Everything she loved. And she couldn't bear to lose him again.

He felt like he was crumbling.
He wanted to tell her all of it. Everything. That his father had been a POW and killed by a terrorist organization and that he and his mother where in danger because of it. The witness protection program was killer and he really didn't enjoy it. So many rules, so much secrets, so much he had left behind. There where so many questions, so much that needed to be answered still. He didn't even know the details of his fathers death besides that. He wanted to, but he also wanted to break and tell everything to Kalina. Everything. But he couldn't. The government found out and they would have his head.
He followed her over to the tree and glanced over at her. She looked cold. He was cold, too, but he was a gentlemen. He slid his jacket off and handed it to her. " Here." He said with a faint smile as he sat down next o her by the tree. He flexed his arms a little bit, before wrapping his arm around her shoulder as she leaned her head against his shoulder. He leaned his head against hers and sighed, closing his eyes a little. He missed this. The closeness. The familiarity.
He pulled away from her a little bit to look her in the eyes. "And you won't ever know what I'm running from." He said, offering her a faint smile, as if he was consoling her, even though he knew it wouldn't do any good. "Never will I leave you. Don't you worry you're pretty little mind about it." His smile got a little bit brighter as he pecked her quickly on the forehead. He pulled her into him again and rested his head on top of hers. From here he could see the horses in the pasture, and Buster was running around the pasture, tucking his head between his knee's and bucking. " I don't want to lose you again either, Kal."
