we cut ties, we tell lies, we hate changeA N D W E W A N N A C L A I M W H E R E W E F E E L - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -It was a cloudy day in Addison, sending Nevaeh's happy mood down into the gutter. She glanced over at the clock - eleven in the morning. She hadn't realized how late she had slept in. A roll of her eyes sent her to the shower, the hot water making her feel a little better about today. It was unpacking day, to say the least. The female wasn't the tiniest bit excited about it, either. She had had an eventful start in this new town, and was ready for some down time. When she had finished her shower, she dug up some clothes from a box and applied a little mascara, brushing her teeth and blow-drying her hair. She left her long, black locks as they were and walked into the living room, where all of her things were piled high in cardboard boxes. Groaning, she started to sort out clothes, which soon led to arranging her smaller-than-usual closet. When it comes to clothes for the female, everything has to be neat, in order, and in perfect reach. This automatically makes the job harder than it needs to be, which was mentally exhausting on her part.
She had just folded all of her jeans when the door bell rang, her instincts to jump up and send clothes flying. At this point, she could've cared less; it was time to be sociable. She put on a little smile as she opened the door, hoping and expecting a lot of things. In response, she got the total opposite - an older woman stood there, holding an envelope in her hand. "Hello. I have a gift for you, compliments of the staff here at Fairview Apartments." She handed her the envelope, Nevaeh nodding and smiling, waving good bye as she walked off, eager to open it. In one motion, she had closed the door, tearing open the envelope to find a letter with a fifty dollar gift card to some place called Oasis. What the hell was Oasis? Troubled, she read the letter, finding out it was just a welcoming gift. Talk about customer service, she thought to herself, a little more uplifted. She also found out the Oasis was a diner, located downtown. An address was on the card, and all Nevaeh had to do was slip on some shoes and grab her keys and phone, locking the door behind her.
Her 2011 Avalanche roared to life as she pulled out of the garage, the address telling her that it was located on one of the main roads. Within a matter of ten minutes, she stumbled across the diner, which looked kind of cheap, compared to her likings. Sighing, she took the opportunity; you don't get too many $50 gift cards for free. Not like she couldn't pay to go anywhere else, she just liked to go to places for free food. Her delicate features stayed expressionless as she parked, walking into the diner. It smelled interesting.. but not bad. Nevaeh found a booth, sliding in before a woman around her age came up, her shirt bearing the logo of the diner. "Can I get you something to drink?" She asked Nevaeh, a dull expression seen on her face as she laid out silverware and a menu. After a moment's pondering, Nevaeh replied, her tones nonchalant. "I'll have a water, please. Oh, and a little lemon, too." Her eyes never drifted from the menu as she spoke, half-heartedly paying attention to the waitress. She came here to eat lunch, so she might as well get on with it.
Once she had figured out what she was going to eat, she looked around, seeing a lot of younger people. There were a few old couples, but the diner was mostly inhabited by people around her age. She almost felt out of place; she was the only one eating alone. When the waitress came back, she handed her her water, and Nevaeh ordered the salad she had wanted. The female had always been a healthy eater, even as a kid. She never liked drive-in types of places. Growing up, her family had the money to eat out at a lot of fancy places, not crappy fast food restaurants where they basically served you grease. Then again, she did eat at home a lot, which accustomed her to the homemade type of cooking. She preferred that before restaurants, even if it was only homemade macaroni and cheese or pasta.
Once her salad came, she picked at it with her fork, spreading the dressing around. She had only eaten a quarter of it before getting bored with the taste, and was swirling it around her plate with an expressionless look in her big, brown eyes. Her black locks spilled around her she slowly pulled her fork up to her mouth again, taking another bite and looking out the window. Cars were driving by, slowly but surely as they passed through the downtown area. Nevaeh saw a laundromat across the street, along with a thrift store. The sidewalks weren't very cluttered, considering the weather outside. It almost felt kind of lonely in Addison, for once.

Sweat dripped from his forehead and stung his eyes, the sun glared down on him and blinded everyone who dared to venture into it, casting mirages of water across the desert. Everyone who looked out on it in the group longed to be able to jump into a cool crisp lake, unfortunately, they had all long since learned the lesson of the tricks the desert played on the mind. They kept themselves in good spirits by thinking of home and the family and friends that waited back on peaceful shores. Most couldn't wait for their time to be up so they could go home, but not Pvt. Daniel Jenner. The army had become his life, and he looked forward to continuing to serve his country. Oh sure, he missed his family, but there was nothing quite like the thrill and accomplishment of being in the arm.
They trudged on into the desert, every step bringing them just a little closer to the town where they knew they would meet their next brush with death. What they weren't expecting, though, was the call from someone in the ranks shouting "get down" and hardly a moment later gunfire erupted out of the buildings. All around them rockets started exploding in the sand, launched from within. Everyone hit the sand, returning fire, knowing they were sitting ducks out there. Slowly they advanced, several injured but still pressing on. When they finally and painstakingly made it in, they thought they were perhaps out of the worse of it, until the unthinkable happened.
Something exploded, sending tiny bits of shrapnel everywhere. Daniel was one of those who got the brunt of the explosion. He was thrown back away, bits of glass and metal embedded in him. The pain was unbearable. He closed his eyes in agony and just when he thought couldn't take it anymore, he heard his name. The voice was feminine, young, no older than 16. His sister. His eyes opened and around him were four white walls, the glow of an alarm clock. He was home. You were doing it again, Danny.
[/s] she said as he focused on her. These nightmares were a disaster, and he rarely slept through the night because of them. Sorry. he said as he sat up and glanced around him. This house they were living in, it was definitely a fixer upper, and being that they'd only been here a few weeks and it was winter... and well, there wasn't heat in most of the house, he, his sister, and their dog all slept on the floor in the one room with a heater, and he tended to unintentionally wake the both of them whenever this happened. Are you going out again?[/s] she asked, to which he nodded and stood up. I'll be back later.Running was his way of shaking off the horrific memories of the war... or at least the less violent. The other was to get himself wasted and start a fight, he'd found running to be the best alternative to getting himself thrown in jail for beating the hell out of some guy. As soon as he stepped out into the cold air of the very early morning, he felt better. There was no memory of the war that he could associate with being this cold. After a quick glance down at the dog he started out, no real destination in mind. He ran until about 4:30 then went straight to the barn to work his horses. By 11 they were all worked and taken care of, leaving the rest of his day open to do whatever he felt like doing... but considering his lack of social life, he didn't really have anything to do, so he decided to just go walk around town for a while, maybe relieve some stress in the process. He headed in to town, the ever faithful German Shepherd following along at his heels. They'd walked for about an hour before Danny decided this was really getting to be a waste of time, and if there was one thing he didn't like it was wasting time. When he realized that, he came to the conclusion that he should probably find something to do while he was here. The oasis was just across the street, and he knew someone who worked there, so he headed in that direction. He was followed inside by the dog, Sitka, who was almost never more than a few feet away from him. Most people would protest if a dog came inside, but just about everyone had seen the news story on her, the bomb dog who had nearly been killed with a bomb went off and now suffered from fairly extreme separation anxiety. She was kind of a local hero. Danny was just about to go talk to the waitress he knew when Sitka suddenly decided she would rather go visit someone she didn't know, and made a bee line for the first person she saw. Danny stopped and turned towards the dog to call her back, but it was already too late. She plopped down on the floor beside the table a girl was sitting at, just staring at her with those big brown eyes of hers. She wasn't begging, just staring... that was her way of asking for attention. Danny sighed and walked over, putting his hand on Sitka's head when he reached her, causing the tail to start wagging at about a million miles an hour. Sorry about her he said apologetically, when she gets an idea in her head, there's no getting it out. In a lot of ways, Danny and Sitka were exactly alike, they were good for each other, both traumatized by a bomb and both stubborn as all get out.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

we cut ties, we tell lies, we hate changeA N D W E W A N N A C L A I M W H E R E W E F E E L - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nevaeh slowly moved her fork to her mouth, taking a small bite as she stared with a bored expression out the window. Her chocolate eyes scanned the streets, aware of every movement. She was tired, to say the least, and a salad and water were not going to help that. After a moment or two, she noticed a man and his dog walking up the street, more specifically a German Shepherd. She had always loved that breed; she had actually grown up with one, and had lived with him since he was just a puppy. Bruce had been the only dog she'd ever had, and she had loved him to pieces until he passed away due to old age. Nevaeh would never forget waking up one morning to find his crumpled body laying lifeless under a tree in their backyard, remembering the tears that had come straight afterward.
To her surprise, the pair entered the diner, the man seemingly a little older than her. The dog never left his side as he came through the door, his movement directed towards a waitress standing on the other side of the Oasis. The German Shepherd seemed to have other plans as it decided to come over towards her, plopping down outside the booth and just staring at her. She immediately fell in love; the dog seemed to be asking for attention. Her expression completely changed as she reached down, a small smile appearing on her features. She scratched her neck, and didn't even notice as the man averted his direction and walked over towards her and the dog.
The male placed a hand over her head, the dog's tail starting to wag. She obviously very much loved her master. "Sorry about her," he said, Nevaeh moving her gaze from the dog to the man. "When she gets an idea in her head, there's no getting it out." His tones seemed almost apologetic as she went back to rubbing the dog, its tail still sufficiently wagging. Nevaeh gave him smile, her outgoing nature coming into play. "It's no problem. She doesn't look rabid to me, so I'm guessing my life isn't in danger." Her smile stayed present after her words had escaped, a light and joking expression appearing on her features. She brought her hand back onto her lap, looking at the man again. "Nevaeh. Nevaeh Whitley," She said, kindly introducing herself. She was a nice person, deep down, which was hard to believe coming from some people. The man wasn't a threat, so what was there to lose?

Sitka was so attached to Danny that he had a hard time doing much of anything without her. If they were on opposite sides of a door, she would lie down outside the door until he came out. If he left her at home she would have a nervous break down and practically chew her way through the walls to get out. When she had first gotten back from Iraq and sufficiently recovered from her injuries, she'd been terrified of everything. You couldn't force her into a building if your life depended on it. Any sudden movements or unexpected sounds would send her into a panic. The 4th of July was a miserable time for the both of them. Whoever came up with fireworks as the way to celebrate anything was an idiot. Sitka still had the problem of strongly disliking men in hats or people carrying anything that she could mistake as a gun. Most of the time she would just cower behind Danny when she was scared, but a time or two she had tried to bite.
No, certainly not in any danger. He said with a nod, the only way she would really be in danger was if she was carrying explosives, and he was pretty damn sure no one in Addison texas was carrying explosives. Although, on the 4th of July that was likely to change... but they would probably get out of town and go camp up in the mountains or something so as to avoid the unpleasant reaction to the fireworks he knew they would both have if they should stay there.
When she introduced herself, he very nearly introduced himself with his military title... a habit he had formed while serving for six years. It had just become natural. Luckily this time he caught himself before doing so. Danny Jenner. He said offering the girl his hand. He honestly couldn't remember the last time he had been called Daniel. All his life his family had called him Danny, and in the Army he was always called by his title and his last name. Most guys grew out of their childhood nicknames, but he'd never really been called by anything else, so he would probably always be Danny.
Sorry it took so long and it's so short and gross...

we cut ties, we tell lies, we hate changeA N D W E W A N N A C L A I M W H E R E W E F E E L - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "No, certainly not in any danger." He replied with a nod, Nevaeh offering him a small smile as she twirled her bracelets around her wrists. She didn't have the slightest idea as to what to say next, but somehow she found the words and looked up at him, acknowledging the dog again as she did so. "Really? She looks pretty vicious to me." She said, her sarcastic notes hitting perfectly. The dog was very friendly, and Nevaeh was enjoying the slight company she had for the time being. After all, she had been alone for the past couple of weeks in Addison, for she didn't know anyone at all. Her family and relatives lived quite a ways from here, which wasn't always the greatest thing. Still, it had its perks, which was always satisfying.
The moments were ticking by as she either stared at her hands or the dog, its big eyes staring right into her own. The meeting of this new man was definitely keeping her occupied, which was a good thing. She absolutely hated having nothing to do, so this was fulfilling in a way that was beneficial to her happy attitude for the day. No one really cared for Nevaeh's cranky days, which sometimes happened one too many times a week. So far, today was going well, and the female's content attitude proved it. Taking a short sip of her water, she set it back down on the table before her, pushing her plate a few inches away. She was obviously finished, and returned to the dog's cute expression and scratched under her chin. "What's her name?" She absentmindedly said, her focus still on the dog.
Once the two had given their names and introduced themselves, Nevaeh nodded, her chocolate eyes wandering around the restaurant. Quite a few people had showed up, which was always a good thing. Nevaeh liked a busy store; it made the shopping experience even more enjoyable with the countless number of people available to talk to. She only realized he had put a hand out a second after he had done so, causing Nevaeh to be a little slow. "Oh! Sorry," She simply spoke, placing her delicate hand in his to shake hands with the man. He seemed very nice, but she still felt that there was something reserved about him. She couldn't put her finger on it, but she still kept her content expression and looked at his figure once more before glancing at the dog, interested in her more than Danny at the moment, as odd as that sounded. Nevaeh had always liked dogs, more so horses; there was just something about the demeanor of this one that drew her in.
Nevaeh stood up, stepping out of the booth and around the dog. After she felt stretched out again, she leaned against the table, waiting for her bill. She might as well engage in a conversation, right? It's not every day that an attractive man comes up to you. Well, more than once a week, if you're Nevaeh Whitley. It was mainly because of her deceiving appearance, which looked like she was in her early twenties instead of just eighteen, fresh out of high school. She didn't really care, though; as long as the man was useful for something. Danny seemed to just be looking for conversation, even if it was because of his dog and he was forced to. Something was better than nothing, right? "So.. do you board at Crossfire? Or do you not have horses?" She said, trying to make this meeting go somewhere. Horses were always a fun topic to expand on. Nevaeh could talk about her mare for hours on end, if she really wanted to.
