You'll never enjoy your life, living inside the box You're so afraid of taking chances.
For the first time in a long time, Kayleigh was able to stop and smell the roses, literally. Smiling at the sweet scent, she closed her eyes for a moment as she enjoyed the summer sunshine on her skin. She bathe in the sun, soaked it all in, wanting to remember the warmth all around her before winter had to come again.
Kayleigh walked on through the park, watching young families play catch or frisbee on the green grass, and glance at the couples snuggling up on blankets underneath tall oak trees. She walked by a couple making out on a nearby bench, and raised an eyebrow, the corner of her mouth pulling up into a smirk.
There was nothing more cliche and annoying than seeing PDA.
Kayleigh walked on, carrying her school bag in one hand, an iced coffee in the other, making her way to the quieter and more personal corner of the park, where a small round table was waiting for her.
After putting her things down, she pulled out her college textbook about the horse anatomy, immediately pulling out her notebook to begin the chapter notes. She jotted down a few things, but soon began to drift off into other thoughts.
It had been two months since she first moved to Addison, leaving behind her drunken and abusive father, and since then, she had occupied her thoughts with catching up with the enormous amount of school work that had piled up and working. But now that she settled down, and her excitement from being in a new environment subsided, she couldn't help but feel the idea of loneliness creep into her mind. She almost missed having someone to come home to, even if the person hit and beat her, and stole money for yet more beer and rum.
A warm summer breeze washed over here, and rustled the text book pages. Some loose papers flew from her notebook, and scattered around the table.
Rules and regulations, force you to play it safe Get rid of all the hesitation, It's time to seize the day.

Marcas wasn’t used to this sort of warmth. Back in Ireland, the temperature never got this high, and it rained. A lot. So you can imagine that when he first landed in America, he almost died from the heat. He probably shouldn’t have decided to visit in the middle of summer, Alex had warned him. Still, he was here now, and he was going to enjoy however long he was going to stay here for. Something he still hadn’t decided, hence why he had picked up a working visa valid for a few years instead of just a holiday one, so he could decide to go home whenever he wanted.
He wandered the park, hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans – again, he probably shouldn’t have worn them today, he really needed to learn to dress to the weather now. He was only just in Addison today, actually, he had stopped at Alex’s but there hadn’t been anyone home, strange, since he had told him when he was going to get there, so he presumed he had gotten caught up at work, so he had strategically hidden most of his things on the back porch after convincing Alex’s dog he wasn’t a threat. Wasn’t hard really, the dog was probably a little too friendly, didn’t make any sort of guard dog. And now he was at the park after walking for a bit, apparently his brother didn’t live far from it.
A piece of paper flew into him, wrapping itself haphazardly around his arm before he grabbed it so it wouldn’t fly off again. Quickly glancing at it, he realised it wasn’t just a piece of rubbish flying along in the wind, it had something to do with horse anatomy covering it. A quick glance around showed him that it must have come from the table with the pretty blonde haired girl sitting at it, already collecting pages that had also flown away in the breeze.
He wandered over, holding the piece of paper and another he picked up from the ground along the way out to her when he got close to her, offering her a smile as he spoke. “These yours?” he asked, vaguely remembering to slow his speech a little so his thick Irish accent wouldn’t be too hard to understand, with the mind to also ask her if she knew of any decent places to eat around here while he was at it.

She was just beginning to pick up a few of the papers, when a few more fluttered loose from the notebook's pages. Biting her lip in annoyance, she scrambled from her chair, and got on her hands and knees to retrieve the papers. She had almost managed to get all of them back, before a shadow fell upon her, and she heard someone speak.
"These yours?" A man said in a somewhat repressed Irish accent. Kayleigh looked up, squinting her eyes a little because of the sunlight that surrounded that man's face. She stood up, with a small smile, brushing the dirt from her knees.
"Yes they are, thank you." She said with a slightly brighter smile as she took back the papers from the stranger. She gently took them from his hand, making eye contact with her soft blue eyes. The man in front of her was tall, with dark hair and a similar shade of blue eyes to her own. His smile was kind and soft, a smile that was quite unfamiliar to her.
In Kayleigh's past, she had become accustomed to four types of smiles. Drunk smile, abusive smile, manipulative smile and pathetic smile. All of them had come from her father.
A drunk smile meant that Kayleigh didn't have too much to worry about. A drunk smile meant she could go to sleep that night, and not worry about her father breaking down her locked bedroom door at night. It meant that so long as she didn't make any loud noises, or piss him off, she wouldn't have to worry about her father's hand connecting to her face, or worse.
A manipulative smile could mean one of two things, that either her father was going to ask for money for more alcohol, or drugs, or both, or that she was about to used in a way that a daughter should never be used by her father. It made Kayleigh want to cry immediately, knowing that something was about to occur that was completely out of her control.
A pathetic smile was another smile that meant that Kayleigh didn't have to worry so much, so long that her father didn't go into a drunken rage or switch moods. It was another smile that meant she could sleep almost soundly at night, when she could block out the sounds of her father crying pathetically in the next room.
Lastly there was the abusive smile that was the worst of all the smiles Kayleigh had received from her father. It made her tremble all over with fear, make her heart race, and make her heart beat so loudly she could feel it from her ears. It meant that pain was about to come, perhaps some blood, but most definitely some bruises. It meant that she needed to run.
But the stranger's smile didn't fit into any of the categories she had seen. It was soft and accepting, and seemed warm and almost welcoming. His blue eyes were inviting and calm, and didn't have even the slightest hint of rage within them. Kayleigh half sighed, realizing that since she had run away from her father, she honestly didn't have much to worry about. She would never be in that situation again.
"I'm taking some courses on Equestrian sciences, and I'll be needing these papers later to review for the test, so thank you for getting them back to me-" Kayleigh said, trailing off, looking for the man to respond with his name.

“No problem.”
Marcas let go of the papers he was holding out to her when she reached out to take them, offering her another smile. He was going to admit, she was pretty. Shorter than him – not that that was exactly hard to be – with wavy gold hair, and blue eyes rather similar to his. Although he didn’t mistake what was hidden behind them. Wariness perhaps? Maybe she had just been through a lot. Not something he could relate to, exactly, he couldn’t say that he had ever had a hard life, no, it had been a little loud, and crazy, but normal nonetheless.
But that hidden thing seemed to fade after a few moments as she continued to study Marcas, which he found himself strangely thankful for. Perhaps it was just because he wasn’t often looked at with anything like that, least of all by a woman. He was the sort of guy who crossed the road walking at night to let them know he wasn’t a threat. So maybe that’s why it was a relief.
The sound of her voice again snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Marcas, Marcas Murphy,” he introduced himself, extending a hand out to her to shake, if she wanted.
“Equestrian sciences? Sounds interesting. Can’t say I’ve had much to with horses myself lately,” he said, grinning at her again. The Murphy males hadn’t gotten quite as much into riding as the girls had, sure, he would have a go every now and again, riding as a kid meant he could ride well enough and he knew how to look after a horse, but that was about as far as his knowledge went.
“You wouldn’t happen to know of any decent places to eat around here, would you? I literally just got off a plane and got into Addison, but my brother doesn’t appear to be home so I’m stuck until he is,” Marcas asked, suddenly aware of just how hungry he really was. Sure, he probably could have broken into Alex’s house without breaking anything, and Alex probably wouldn’t have cared, but he had figured that he should probably wait it out.

Kayleigh stared back at the attractive stranger in front of her, his eyes connecting to her own. Usually Kayleigh was one to shy away from strangers, especially boys. However, there was something different about the guy in front of her that made her feel secure enough to not stammer, or stare at her feet. His eyes were gentle and calm, and like before, he seemed rather inviting. Kayleigh searched his eyes a little further and could tell that he was honest and caring, and he seemed to be without a hint of deceit.
She hadn't been in Addison for more than two months, but already she had seen a trend in townspeople. For the most part they were all consumed with the worries of their own lives, and hardly threw a sideways glance at Kayleigh or any other stranger who walked beside them on the street. It was because of this observation that made Kayleigh surprised to see that the stranger had stuck around long enough to talk to her, instead of just handing back the papers rudely before continuing on his way.
Although she felt like she could probably trust Marcus, Kayleigh flinched when Marcus extended his hand in greeting, a reflex she had learned from her father's quick slaps. She stared at him for a moment, before putting her own hand in greeting. His warm hand wrapped around hers and Kayleigh felt oddly comforted.
"It's Kayleigh, Kayleigh Harding." She listened to him comment about her studying equestrian sciences, smiling politely, a small chuckle beginning to form on her lips. "Do you have experience riding?" Kayleigh questioned, curious since the only men she had ever met who had ridden had been gay, which clearly Marcus was not.
"I haven't been here in Addison for long either. But I do know of a small bistro just around the corner." Kayleigh said with a smile. "I think it's just a block or two away. And I've heard they have excellent sandwiches."

“It’s nice to meet you, Kayleigh,” Marcas answered, smiling at her again and committing her name to memory, he could be a bit forgetful when it came to people’s names, usually, but he had the feeling he would remember hers. She was the first person besides the people in customs and the cab driver he had spoken to in the States, after all.
He did notice the flinch as he extended his hand to her, hit by a pang of worry for a second, wondering if he shouldn’t have done that, perhaps he should have waited for her to make the first move. He wasn’t exactly used to people flinching at a handshake, but he wasn’t going to ask any questions, he was far from nosy...unlike Liam, but then again, Liam was paid to be nosy. And look at what trouble that had gotten him into – he had the IRA as well as a bunch of other organisations calling for his blood back home.
He shook her hand carefully, gently, when she finally took it, making sure not to hold it too long, not wanting to cause her any more discomfort, if she was still feeling it. He was intrigued, that was for sure. Probably because of how he was raised, with a family as large and loud as his, he wasn’t really used to shy people, and it wasn’t like most of the people in the town he grew up in were shy either. Eh, maybe it was just the whole ‘new country’ experience.
“Not much, really. Used to have ponies as a kid, and my sisters ride. So I can ride well enough not to be dumped on my arse,” he said, the use of the word ‘arse’ was just automatic, really. Although once it had come out of his mouth, he figured perhaps he should have toned it down, for now.
“I’ve been here for...twenty two minutes, to be exact. I’ve been in America for about two hours, so I think you have me beat,” he answered, pulling out his phone to check the time quickly and flashing her with another friendly grin. “And, that’s brilliant. I’m starving.”
“I wouldn’t mind company either, if you’re up for it,” he offered, thinking of inviting her almost as an afterthought, friendly as always. Even if she was a complete stranger, it just didn’t really occur to him that she might not want to. Ever friendly as always, sometimes he forgot other people weren’t quite often like that.

Kayleigh listened to Marcus talk about his sisters and ponies, raising one eyebrow when he said arse. He almost seemed to pause right after he said it, and look at her with a questioning look to see if he overstepped the invisible boundaries that existed between them. It was this reaction that made Kayleigh's slightly nervous face break into a small amused smile.
"Only two hours?" She questioned, thinking of a few questions to ask Marcus. "Are you just visiting some family or did you just move here?" Kayleigh asked without thinking first. She paused, and it was her turn to wonder if she had overstepped the boundaries.
She watched as he took his phone from his pocket to check the time, and she checked her own watch, and noticed it was near 1:15pm. Kayleigh began to think about places she could go to and grab something to eat, but the only place that seemed enticing to her was the bistro that she mentioned to Marcus.
“I wouldn’t mind company either, if you’re up for it,” Marcus said, casually inviting her to lunch with him. Kayleigh froze for a second, feeling like a deer in the headlights. "Um..well.." She said as an automatic response, as she stared down at her feet for a moment, unsure of how to reply.
Kayleigh was always her most nervous self around people she didn't know. She felt on edge, anxious and panicky whenever she was in an unfamiliar situation. She also didn't trust others very easily, and had few, if any, friends. She blamed her father for raising her to have little faith in the people around her, and to make her closed off, nearly isolated in society.
However, Kayleigh didn't quite feel as nervous as she normally did around Marcus. There was something about his general deposition that seemed to make her trust him right away. And she could tell that he was a good hearted person, someone who Kayleigh wanted to be around. She glanced back up and caught his gaze, and felt the anxiety drain away. "Sounds like a plan, I'm hungry as well." She said, with an almost confident undertone to her voice.

Yeah, Marcas was definitely going to have to work on the language thing, it seemed. He really couldn’t help it; all of the Murphy siblings had a very...wide...vocabulary, asking them to say butt instead of arse just didn’t work out too well most of the time. The filter between brain and mouth was almost non-existent. But at least she smiled a moment after raising an eyebrow at the word, which made him feel a bit more relaxed about having said it. Really, he would rather not spend the first three hours being in America being slapped for using the word arse.
“Yeah, only two short hours. The heat’s killing me,” he answered, grinning at her again. He really was going to have to rethink his wardrobe, even though he preferred to live in jeans most days. “A bit of both, really. I’m visiting my brother. He’s lived here for about...six or seven years now? But I have a three year working visa, so I can stay for as long or as little as I like. You never know, really, I might end up staying,” he continued, running a hand through his dark brown curls, causing them to stick up a little more than usual.
He wondered if he had made another wrong move inviting her to lunch with him. He kept feeling like he was putting his foot in it, was it really that different here to back home? Or maybe it was just this situation. Yeah, maybe approaching a strange woman hadn’t been the best idea, now that he thought about it...no turning back now, however.
"Sounds like a plan, I'm hungry as well," she finally answered, the nervous look she had previously held when he originally asked her if she wanted to accompany him fading away, looking a bit more confident now. He grinned at her.
“Great...but I’m afraid you’re going to have to lead the way or I’ll get both of us lost,” he said, chuckling.

Kayleigh laughed a little when Marcus said the heat was killing him. “Yeah the heat does take some getting used to. But it can be quite a nice on some days when there is a breeze.” Kayleigh looked over Marcus again, realizing he looked a little out of place with wearing jeans. She herself was wearing some older brown cowboy boots paired with a blue cotton sundress, which showed just the right amount of skin to be cool, but at the same time modest. “I also find that it’s easier to adjust to the heat when you are properly dressed and not over heating in jeans on a hot day like this...” She said with a small smirk, seeming to be much more relaxed now than before. As she spoke, a gentle breeze blew across the park, making her sundress flutter gently around her slim figure, and her long, blond waves sway across her shoulders. She closed her eyes for a moment, just enjoying the cooler temperature the wind had brought with it, before the breeze ended and the heat settled in around the park again. She opened her eyes again as the breeze ended, feeling slightly refreshed, however ready to go enjoy a cold drink.
Marcus ran his fingers through his hair, obviously uncomfortable with the high heat, making his hair messier than before. Without thinking, Kayleigh took one step closer, and reached up on her tip toes to fix his hair. She quickly ran her fingers through it to put the curls back in place, with a half concentrated look upon her face. She was in the process of fixing one curl, when she realized exactly what she was doing. She paused for a moment, and sucked in her breath, noticing the few inches that distanced her face, chest and the rest of her body from him. It was this moment of pause, as she stood like a statue close to Marcus, her gaze fixed on his, when she realized how attracted she was to him. She bit her bottom lip, her eyes still holding his gaze, before she stared at his seemingly soft and inviting lips for a moment more, before she clumsily took a step away.
“..Should-d we go to that bistro now?” Kayleigh awkwardly half stammered, a small rosy tinge coming to her cheeks. She turned away so he wouldn’t see her blush, and to gather her things into her bag, feeling a little pathetically awkward.
