When she pulled her truck up to her apartment building, Kody Lynn couldn’t help but feeling giddy. Climbing up the stairs that led to her second story apartment, her boots clanked just a little too loudly. Her spurs rung with a familiar high pitched ring as she made it to the top and quickly unlocked both the screen and the front door. She stepped inside and held the door open for Dustin.
“Um... Don’t mind the boxes... Make yourself.... I guess as at home as you possibly can...” Kody chuckled as she slipped her boots off at the door and kicked them off to the side. She hit a spur with her toe and her face scrunched up painfully.
“You can take off your boots, if you want...” She smiled and made her way into the kitchen. Her apartment was quite lovely, despite being covered in boxes. Her carpet was soft beige, and her walls were a light shade of blue. Aside from being small, it was rather comfortable and roomy even with the boxes. Eight card board boxes sat in a pile in the corner of her living room area. Four of them had the words “Horse stuff” sharpied in big bold letters. The others were labeled according to their contents. Books, pictures, shoes and school stuff... Luckily she had already gotten her kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom things unpacked along with her clothes. It was the small stuff that she hadn’t bothered unpacking yet. Most of the boxes still needed to be piled into the bed of her truck and toted to the barn. Most of the box’s contents were horsey things, anyways.
“I’m sorry I don’t have a couch yet... But you can sit at the table while I make dinner, if you want... Do you want a drink?” Kody asked as she made her way to the cupboard. She pulled down two coffee mugs, a red one and a black one, and filled them with ice from the freezer before pouring them half way with Jack Daniels. She was limited when it came to kitchen utensils. It was just yesterday that she had purchased paper plates and a package of cheap silver wear at Wal-Mart along with some groceries to stock her fridge with. She was new to the whole living on your own thing.
“Um... I would serve it in frosted shot glasses if I could, but unfortunately, shot glasses weren’t on my list of things to buy at Wal-Mart yesterday.” She smiled as she offered Dustin the mug, taking a sip herself of the icy brown liquid that burned just a little on her tongue. “I can bring the TV in from my bedroom if you would like to watch TV while I cook... Are you hungry now? Or would you rather if we waited for dinner?” She asked as innocently as possible. Kody Lynn was used to being socially awkward, but this went beyond all awkwardness. She literally had nothing. She had nothing to offer him. She didn’t have a couch; she didn’t have a good television... She didn’t have anything to entertain him with but a small television and conversation. The thought made her homesick and want to cry. She stood in the kitchen clutching her mug of Jack Daniels, in horse sweat stained jeans and a black sweater that now, in the warmth of her apartment, was beginning to be too hot for her. How ridiculously mediocre did this seem to him?

Dustin had followed Kody to her appartment, and parked right beside her. Throwing the door of his Burgandy F350 open, he jumped out. Smiling as he closed the door behind him, leaving his phone in the truck, he turned and watched as Kody headed up the steps. He followed her, nodding as he stepped into her apartment. He smiled as he saw all of the boxes sitting around, then looked over at her as she began to speak. "Ouch," He said and smiled as he noticed her make a face after hitting herself on the toe. That always hurts, and especially spurring your shin. He looked around, studying the boxes. There were quite a few of them, but he didn't feel uncomfortable. He actually felt great. It was cool that there was no couch, sitting on the floor was fun. "It's great," He said with a smile as he looked at her, then back to her home.
He kicked his boots off, leaving them beside hers. He followed her to the kitchen, his feet dragging on the floor. He always drug his feet. "No big deal, I'll sit on the floor if you want me to" He said and smirked. He watched as she poured the jack into two cups, then took a swig of it. "aw, this is just fine," He said with a friendly smile as he took a drink of it too. He noticed her getting a little uncomfortable, and automatically his brain began to turn. He knew what to do when his mother seemed a little off, and figured all girls were like that. He'd never had many relationships, so he didn't know. He looked at her, holding the bottle in her hand. "Are you okay?" He asked, placing his right hand on her shoulder. It was big compared to her, since he was a pretty huge guy. He was six foot somethin, and while he wasn't fat he sure did weigh a lot. Typical for someone that tall, though.
"You look upset," He said, then smiled softly "how could you be upset when you have a bottle of Jack, food, and TV?" He laughed, shaking his head at himself. He could tell she was slightly flushed, and wasn't sure why. He let his hand come up to her cheek, pressing the back of it against her soft skin. He chuckled under his breath, "plus, you beautiful..." he said, feeling the heat on his hand. He removed it and took another sip of his drink, sitting down at the table. He kicked back and smiled "It's up to you, darlin', this is your place.." he said and laughed softly. She was too cute.
He tried not to be so obvious that he really liked her, but it was hard. It was probably pretty apparent now, that he'd called her beautiful. It was the truth, and he couldn't think of anything else to say. He tried, but it just came out as that. "We could, you know.. play uno, hide and seek, truth or dare.." He said and laughed, thinking of the games he played when he was younger. Those were the days. Spin the bottle was also one, but that was no use with two people.

She had told him to make himself at home and he did. He seemed so comfortable, so easy. His laid back personality was putting her at ease. When he asked her is she was okay, the question caught her off guard. Did he really pick up on her mood that easily? Was it that obvious that she was uncomfortable? She sighed when he asked her, and then she felt his warm hand on her face, placing the back of it against her skin. The touch gave her goose bumps. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth when he said she was beautiful. Was she? She didn’t think so. What did you say to a compliment like that? For a quick moment she wanted to stand up on her tippy toes and wrap her arms around him. For a second the urge of kissing his lips swept over her. She fought back the feeling with iron clad ferocity. “Thank you...” She mumbled, averting her eyes quickly. She didn’t take compliments too well, mostly because she didn’t get them often. Usually it was her wit that saved her. “You’re not too bad yourself,” She grinned, the light of her smile reaching her brown eyes and making them twinkle. She wanted to reach for his hand and keep it pressed to her face, but instead she balled her fists and watched him sit down at her small kitchen table.
“Alright, stud...” Kody started. Turning on her socked feet, she placed her mug on the counter with a clink. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving. So, dinner must be made ASAP. I’m going to go change my shirt because it’s going to get hot in here with the stove on. Give me one second...” Kody hurried off to her room, and with the door shut, quickly rummaged in her drawers for a short sleeved shirt or tank top while stripping herself of her heavy black sweater. Finally finding something appropriate, she slipped on a white ribbed tank top. It was a little low cut, but she pulled it up in the front and called it even. She grabbed a light jacket and walked back to the kitchen feeling much cooler.
Starting the stove was easy. It wasn’t like her stove at home that required a match or lighter. This one, all you had to do was turn the knob on the appropriate burner, and BOOM! It lit up in flame. With the stove started and turned to medium, she grabbed a deep frying pan from a corner cupboard and filled it with oil, allowing it to heat while she sliced the cube steaks into palm sized pieces. She smiled while she sliced the meat. He wanted to play a game? That would certainly ease the boredom.
“Hmm... We could play Never Have I Ever, or take Strip Shooters.” She laughed at the suggestion of the last one, flashing him a devilish grin. Strip Shooters was a game she played with her girlfriends. You take a shot and remove and item of clothing. Although the game was purely a joke, for him at least, the thought sent warmth into her finger tips. What if he agreed to Strip Shooters? Kody Lynn shrugged. That was a big bottle of Jack. Someone would end up naked and drunk. “Or we could just play Never Have I Ever.” She suggested again, flashing him a more neutral smile, although both of her suggestions sounded fun to her. There was nothing like a game of Never Have I Ever to get to know someone.
“I’ll start us off. Never Have I Ever... Been to Alaska...” Kody looked over at Dustin and took a sip of her drink. Alaska was her favorite state, and she was lucky that she was able to go there once with her step father.

He smiled as she told him he wasn't too bad himself. He couldn't help but to want to hug her, or kiss her, or something. Then again he was new to the whole 'liking a girl' besides his teenage life. It was easier then, you told a girl you liked her and there it was. A relationship. He figured being an adult was a lot different. Sure he'd hooked up with girls, but he'd never wanted just a relationship. Well, he wanted one, but it seemed unrealistic. He had new goals since he moved here, wanting to settle down a little bit and get on with his life. He wasn't getting any younger. Hopefully she felt the same way, at least a little bit. He'd feel dumber than a snail if she didn't.
He caught himself in a daze, realizing he was thinking on the subject too much. Food sounded good, and he was pretty hungry himself. He looked at her quickly as she announced she was going to put on something else. He nodded at her, smiling and taking another sip "alrighty," he said softly. He could deal with that. He glanced around the room once she walked off, the smile still on his lips. Wiping it off as he realized it, he rolled his eyes at himself. Goofy son of a bitch, He thought to himself, and couldn't help but chuckle a little bit.
When she walked back in, he almost couldn't keep his eyes off of her. She looked good in sweaters and tank tops. His kind of girl. He watched her fire up the stove, and begin cooking. When she asked to play a game, he grinned "never have I ever? Sounds good to start off with.." he said with a smirk. Never had she ever been to Alaska. He shrugged and took a drink, he hadn't either. "Never have I ever owned a cat" He said with a laugh, taking another drink. He hated cats, just something about them wasn't for him. He didn't like their smell or the fact that most wouldn't play with you. They always had barn cats, but they weren't very sociable and if you didn't bother them, they wouldn't bother you.

She could feel his eyes on her as she bustled about the kitchen. She smiled when he decided to play, but smiled wider when she heard his turn. Kody Lynn couldn’t admit to being a cat person, really. Sure she had had them as pets, but that was mostly her mother’s doing. Her mother was a cat person, while Kody was a dog person. She had a large black Rottweiler Labrador mix at home. Her name was Lily, and she was Kody’s baby. She brought the mug to her mouth and took a large sip. “I’m afraid I’m not a major fan of cats.” She smirked.
Kody pulled her long brown hair into a messy bun, wrapping it tight upon her head before grabbing two large bowls from her dishwasher. She cracked three eggs in one, poured flour and seasoning in the other. She stood sideways, listening as the oil began to pop, and her mind began to spin. The alcohol was beginning to take affect on her body. She could feel herself relaxing, even after a few sips. That’s why she liked Jack.
“Alright stud, let’s see...” She racked her mind as she swished the raw meat in circles in the broken egg yolks. “Never have I ever slept with someone that I didn’t love.” She said finally, smiling deviously. She didn’t reach for her drink. She didn’t take a sip. Instead she moved the meat from the eggs to the bowl that the flour was in. She then turned to the stove and flopped the piece of flour coated meat into the frying pan. She smiled when she heard the oil roar up into a frenzy of popping and crackling. Had she ever had sex with someone that didn’t matter to her? One night stands weren’t her thing. Although she had relationships before in the past, never really going anywhere, she lacked experience in that whole area. She wanted a relationship, but she didn’t want another meaningless fling. She had had too many cold relationships, too many empty kisses.
Her last boyfriend, Adam, was extremely difficult for her. She had loved him but every time they kissed, every time they fooled around, it felt empty. It felt robotic. The only reason they had stayed together was because that was all they knew. Neither was brave enough to make the next move into separation. It was an awkward relationship, a cold and awkward relationship that was full of meaningless words and kisses that lacked conviction. Kody reached out to take her mug by the handle and hesitantly brought it to her lips. She paused for a moment, remembering Adam, the sweat, the creaking of her bed, the pain. She remembered how afterwards she layed on her back, staring at her ceiling, feeling sick to her stomach. She remembered how it felt when it hit her that she didn't love him any more, and she remembered the look on his face when she told him. She felt a pang of sorrow in the pit of her stomach, and she flicked her wrists back on her black mug. Bottoms up. She had never meant to ever hurt him.
She could smell the warmth of the alcohol as she slowly drew in a large gulp, ridding her glass of the last of her drink. She spun on her heels and quickly seized the glass jug. She poured her mug to brim, and then looked to Dustin who sat only a few feet away from her. She could tell already, from the way her head was buzzing slightly, that tonight was going to be quite the event. First drink in and she was already feeling a slightly tipsy, probably because she hadn't eaten anything all day.

He smirked as she announced she wasn't a cat fan. Good then, another thing they had in common. Of course he loved all animals, he just had his select two. Dogs and horses. He was wanting a dog, but hadn't had time to really look for one. He wanted one he could teach. They always had two Border Collies at the farm, Tex and Mollie. They helped with a lot of the herding work, and Dustin and his father always took them with them when they went to gather the cattle. Then they had three Heelers, Two blue ones named Deb and Max, and one red one called Nute. They were always Dustin's buddies, and he loved having them around. They all listened pretty good, the Collies got hyped up a bit every now and then but that was typical.
"Never have I ever slept with someone I didn't love," He smiled as he thought about it. She didn't drink. He didn't either. He wasn't too worried about it, people did things they didn't want to. Not that he didn't want to. He'd slept with one girl he cared about, and she turned around and left him. He wouldn't say he was scared to sleep with someone he cared about again, but he kinda was. He wasn't sure about the whole 'how sex affects a real relationship' deal. He had slept with a lot of girls he didn't care for, and wasn't really proud of it. He didn't regret it, though. He figured it was all about growing up. Seeing as they were mostly at horse shows, rodeos, and his friend's did it too. He was over that, now. "Brutal question," He said with a chuckle, before thinking about his next statement.
"Never have I ever slept with three people in one night," He said, not taking a drink. Hopefully she wouldn't judge him, though he didn't think she would. He remembered only one night he'd slept with more than one person. Unfortunately, he barely remembered it. He wouldn't do that again, seeing as they were all crazy slutty women. He figured one of his buddies had convinced him, when truthfully it was the girls who were behind it all.
He thought for a little bit, remembering his old flame. A girl that took lessons with his father. Her name was Laney Anderson. Her parents had money, let her have whatever she wanted. She was hot, not pretty, cute, beautiful, but hot. She was the girl every guy wanted, and every guy chased. Dustin never chased her, seeing as he figured it wouldn't be worth it. Laney came to him, at first only seeking friendship in Dustin's eyes. They began to hang out every day after her lesson, and Dustin would take her with him wherever he went. Then it became more. Then it was Laney wanting to go places alone, and Dustin couldn't help but follow. They dated for 5 months, had sex, and the next day Laney left him. Her whole family moved to Alabama, which was planned way before the relationship. Leaving Dustin broken hearted, he didn't think much of relationships from then on. He was sad, of course, but moved on with his life.
He looked back at Kody, smiling at her. He could feel the alcohol getting to him slightly. He was more of a beer drinker, but Jack got him every time. He hadn't drank anything but beer in a long time. This was certainly the occasion.

She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw him take a drink from his cup. Her guilt seemed to ebb just a little. She knew she probably wasn't the only one in the room who had done it. He was a guy. He was a cowboy. He was a handsome cowboy. Of course he had. Who hadn't? She remembered crying to her best friend, May, after what she had done. She only laughed at her, with a loving glint of humor in her eye. “You're growing up, Kodes. You do things that you aren't proud of. Baby, that's life.” She had said as she smoothed down Kody's dark brown hair. Strangely enough, her words did make her feel better. But the pain she saw in Adams eyes still haunted her.
Kody stepped closer to Dustin and slowly poured his glass to the brim before screwing the cap back on the bottle. It was a big bottle and there was plenty to go around. She took a deep breath as she thought about his question. Never have I ever slept with three people in one night... Kody poked the frying pieces of meat with a pair of tongs as she racked her brain. She flipped one piece of steak, feeling her stomach growl as the smell fried meat wafted to her nostrils. She grinned hugely as she remembered her weekend in Nevada. She was at a show there, and despite being too young to drink legally, her and May had gotten pretty drunk. “All at the same time?” She asked, her lips twisting up into a seductive smile. “I'm only joking, but I am going to have to drink to that one, embarrassing enough...” She chuckled, and took another drink from her mug.
That wasn't something she had been particularly proud of. After high school and during her first year of college, she had gone a little wild. It was her first time being away from her family. She didn't have anyone to answer to but her best friend May. They had done a lot of stupid things. Long show days lead to lonely nights. Shooting tequila with your best friend is bad enough, but if you throw in a couple pretty good looking cowboys, now, that's not the greatest idea. She smiled fondly at the memory. She couldn't quite complain. She was drunk, but not that drunk. She remembered everything.
Kody flipped the steak pieces carefully, revealing their golden brown tops. As those last pieces crackled in the pot of boiling oil, she turned to the fridge and grabbed some lettuce to chop for a salad. Carrots, green onions, lettuce, tomatoes, she sliced them all carefully and then arranged them in a bowl.
“Never have I ever... Been the other woman... Or in your case, the other man.” She winked at Dustin as she walked to the table and placed the bowl beside him. She had done some crazy things, but that was one thing she couldn't drink to and she was glad for it. Partaking in an affair was, luckily, not a thing she could add to her resume.

As she filled up his cup, he took a sip for the hell of it. It wouldn't hurt. He laughed at her comment, "it's just life!" He said and smirked softly. He took a deep breath, finally taking his eyes off of her to look down at his hands. He looked back up when she spoke again. He didn't drink either. "Not that I know of," He teased, smiling up at her as she sat the bowl of salad in front of him. He reached twords it, brushing her hand on purpose. "Woops," He said teasingly, chuckling at himself. What a dummie. He shoot his head, sitting back and letting his hands fall to the table. "That was kinda cheesy, wasn't it?" He asked, looking up at her grinning from ear to ear. Hopefully she wouldn't be freaked out, he assumed she wouldn't be.
He had always been pretty flirty, but he wanted to be careful with her. He didn't want to make her think he was just in it to get in her pants. Where truthfully, he wouldn't mind that, but he could let his mind rest for awhile on that stuff. Unless she thought different.
He never was really too wild, since his parents let him do what he wanted. He started drinking when he started working, it was just a man's thing at the farm. The men would all stay out at the barn on the weekends and drink and shoot shit. Sometimes they'd have a party, and Dustin would always invite his friends. Sometimes he just went out with his truck and a few friends, sitting on the tailgate with a case of beer for them all to share. Of course there was more when they got back to the farm. He didn't even really leave his house, except for horse shows. Sometimes he went to town for his mom or dad, but usually everyone preferred to hang out with him. A few nights he raced his truck in town, but of course he had things to do back home.
"Never have I ever..." He began, thinking for a few seconds "Never have I ever kissed someone on the first date." He smiled at her again, taking a long sip of the Jack.

She chuckled at his comment. He was correct. It is just life. You live and you learn. You do stupid things and you get over it. There are things you do in your life that you’re not proud of, but you get over it. Every day is a new day.
Kody placed the steak on a large yellow plate, and grabbing the bowl of mashed potatoes, made her way to the table. She placed them in the middle before going to her cabinet for two paper plates, and then to the silverware drawer for two steak knives and two forks. She folded two paper towels and placed one along with the silver wear beside each plate. She then pulled another chair out from the opposite side of the table and scooted it close to where Dustin sat. She looked at him carefully, analyzing his question. She had never kissed on the first date. She couldn’t recall, ever, kissing on the first date. This was so strange to her that she automatically reached out and brushed his face with the back of her hand, feeling its warmth on her skin. She paused there, her hand on his face, and a shiver ran down her spine as she nibbled at her bottom lip carefully. Every part of her wanted to bend down and put her lips to his. Every part of her wanted to press her body close to his, and feel his hands on her. And every part of her mind was screaming with whatever clear perspective it had left.
Kody smiled once. Stroking the back of his head with her finger tips, she carefully lowered her face to his, hovering just a moment before placing her lips to his. It was so unexpected, so exciting to her, that the adrenaline sent shivers down her body, causing her arms to prick with Goosebumps. She had never behaved before with such reckless abandon. Not with something that didn’t involve horses. She was fearless in the saddle, but on the ground she doubted herself. To do this was not in her character, but she felt so completely at ease with him, that what was in her character didn’t seem to matter to her. He was so easy to be around. It was so easy for her to just let go and be herself with him, a man she barely knew, sitting her apartment that she didn’t know, in a state she equally didn’t know.
Kody pulled her lips from his slowly, and smiled when her brown eyes met his. “You taste like Jack.” She smiled. Kody reached for the mug she had set on the counter and took a deep sip from it. “I don’t usually kiss on the first date...” She smiled, and her eyes flickered playfully.

He watched as she put everything in it's place. She was good at this cooking for people thing. As soon as he got the thought through, he felt her hand on his face. He looked up at her again, his eyes meeting her's. He had a stupid grin on his face, an uncontrollable one. As her fingers touched his head, he felt goosebumps run up his arms and his back. She was so beautiful, he was almost beside himself. As she came closer, and hovered over his lips, he met her there as their lips pressed together. He didn't move his hands, or anything, he just kissed her. When she pulled back and spoke, he chuckled "ditto," he said. He barely noticed the taste, or smell, of the Jack seeing as he smelt of it too.
"So I'm the acception?" He asked, winking playfully at her. Looking at the food, then her, he shoot his head. "Wow," He said softly, in a daze of some sorts. "Your great, you know that, right?" He asked and grinned, touching her fore-arm lovingly. He felt amazing right now, like he could do anything. "I'd love to get back to that, but I think we should eat before it gets cold.." He said, sighing playfully. He smiled at her again, turning in his chair.
Maybe this was a good thing. Well, obviously it was. He was with a girl that was smart, coud ride, cook, and had a sense of humor. She was awesome. He wasn't use to anyone like her, he wasn't even use to having a real relationship with any other girl but his mother. Sure he had girl friends, but they didn't count. Any girl he was friends with were just one of the guys.

Kody smiled at his words. She was wonderful? Did he really think that? Her cheeks flushed a bright pink and she sat down beside him. She had gotten compliments before, about her riding, her cooking, but not something so genuine. She nibbled at her bottom lip carefully as she reached out and placed a large piece of steak on his plate. She served the mashed potatoes and salad as well, placing a good sized serving on his plate. “Thank you.” She smiled. “You know, you’re pretty great too.” She whispered, and she was honest. “I know this might sound cliché and lame, but I feel like I’ve known you for a long time. It’s just... It’s really easy to be with you.” She smiled, and scooped a bit of mashed potatoes on her plate along with a small piece of steak and a handful of salad.
She was surprised at how easy it was to be with him. How easy it was to bend close to him and kiss him. His lips felt good on hers, and it took every ounce of self control to pull herself away. So easily could she take him by the hand and lead him to her room. So easily could she peel the clothes away from her body, and welcome him to her bed. So easily, and she knew that that wasn’t just the case of the alcohol. She could hold her liquor. She was no light weight. “I mean, I could easily skip my dinner, but we should probably get some food into you, stud.” She winked playfully and slid the plate to him.
She slowly sliced her steak. Carefully, she speared a piece with her fork and brought it to her mouth, chewing it thoughtfully. She was hungry, and her hunger was being realized more as she ate. “I think it was my turn...” She grinned, and she racked her brain for a question to ask. Her mind drew a blank, and instead of playing, she just wanted to talk. She shrugged without care, slicing and spearing another bite of steak. “I think I just want to talk, actually. Just drink, and eat, and talk.” She said, smiling inwardly as she mixed some butter into her potatoes. She took another deep drink of her Jack before looking at Dustin with a sight, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
“What are our plans after we eat?” She asked as innocently as possible, her lips still twisted into a devious smile.

As she blushed, he couldn't help but smile. "Thank ya, dear" He said softly as she put the food on his plate. She was so cute. When she spoke, he grinned even more. "I feel the same way, totally not lame.." He said, his country accent thick. He looked down at his plate, picking up his fork. He dug in quick, obviously hungry. He grinned at her comment about how she could skip dinner. "Well, I could use the energy.." He said with a wink. He smiled as he took a bite of steak, then mashed potatoes. It was great. "This is really good!" He said, smirking at her.
So she wanted to just talk? He could do that. "Alright, then tell me one thing" He began, taking a bite of salad "how old are you?" He knew she was younger than him, but he wasn't sure how young. She was at least 18, seeing as she had an appartment. He lifted up, taking his can of snuff from his back pocket and putting it in his front pocket. It hurt when you sat on that shit, and no matter how cold you were it always got wet from butt sweat. He wasn't feeling cold at all, his blood was going now. He was alone with a beautiful girl who digged him just as much as he did her. What else could get you excited like that?

"I'm just gonna say it, I'm 26" He said and chuckled, taking another bite of steak. He took a large sip of his jack, to chase everything down. This was too good.

She knew the question was coming. She knew it from the beginning and it was a question she dreaded. Kody sighed when he asked her age. She pulled her eyes from his and studied her jeans clad knees. She knew he was in his mid twenties. Twenty six, that made him seven years older than she was. But she was an adult, she was legal and she was on her own. That had to count for something, right? She was hesitant to tell him. She liked him. She liked the way he made her feel. She liked how easy it was to be around him. Was it so hard to just leave age out of it? “If I tell you, you have to promise not to run away screaming, alright?” She said, and she stuck her fork into her meat, fiddling with it.
“I’m nineteen.” She said slowly. “I turn twenty in the spring...” She added quickly. He was twenty six. She was nineteen. Was the age difference that big of a deal? It was only seven years. Age was just a number, right? Kody Lynn could understand if her age freaked him out. She had that affect on people sometimes. She was mature; she knew how to handle herself. She sometimes drew people in, and then scared them off. Although it hurt, she was used to it. She would understand.
She didn’t want to ask the question, but she knew she had to. On the outside she was calm, but on the inside she was freaking out. She needed to know if her age would be a problem. She wanted to see where this went between them, and if her age was going to be a problem, she would be thoroughly disappointed. But she wanted him to be honest.
“I have to ask... Does my age bother you?” She asked slowly, her voice barely a whisper. She didn’t want him to feel awkward, or strange... She didn’t want him to feel like he needed to reassure her. She just wanted the truth. “I understand if it does...” She whispered, and smiled half heartedly.

Noticing she was drawn back, he realized she probably was a lot younger than him. He didn't feel bad, he didn't feel anything. He didn't really care. "Promise I won't," He said with a smile, finishing his food off. Taking another sip, he sighed. He was getting a pretty good buzz. When she told him, he just smiled at her. He shood his head quickly "nope, it don't bother me one bit," He said softly, grinning. "Age is a number, the way you act defines how old you are, darlin" He said, nodding at her. "Hell, if that's the case I'm 80 somethin, I'm slower than a damn snail and sometimes I can't remember anything," He said and chuckled, shaking his head at himself.
The age didn't bother him, it actually made him feel good. It made him feel more protective. He knew there was a lot of time between 19 and 26, but he felt like she was mature enough to deal with that. He sat back in his seat, rubbing his stomach. "Does it bother you?" He asked, raising his brow at her. He didn't want her to feel like he was some sort of child-molester. They were both adults, but he was just worried about what she would think about it all.
His parents were 10 years apart, and it never stopped them. They met when his mother was 20, and his father was 30. It never phased them, or so they said. He sat propped up, thinking to himself before looking down at his socks. He hoped she wasn't bothered, he'd feel bad. He'd probably feel like the biggest jerk ever for not asking her before, since he was the guy. He felt a lot of pressure, probably more than he should, with the whole relationship thing. Thankfully he didn't really feel it with her, but if she said it bothered her then he would.

His words were comforting and they made her smile even wider. She looked up at him, and all her doubts disappeared. Age was just a number. And if it didn’t bother him, then why should it bother her? It didn’t bother her, and that was the truth.
“I feel like a soccer mom sometimes. I get up, go to class, go to the barn and stress over Goose, and then I come home and by the time I get here I’m so beat that all I want to do is crash.” She chuckled, shaking her head. She felt like the biggest loser sometimes. She had no life. Goose was her life. Everything she did centered on Goose. Goose was it. She ate, schooled, and rode. That was all. That’s how it always had been.
“Age doesn’t bother me,” She smiled when her brown eyes finally met his. She wasn’t sure what would bother her, really. She was really enjoying his company. When he was here she didn’t feel like such a loser. When he was here, she didn’t feel so lonely. Homesickness didn’t ache at her stomach, and her parents weren’t on her mind. She felt completely free. She felt completely at ease. She thought that she would never meet anyone here. That Texas was just going to be a hole of nothing, a barn full of snobby people that would never accept her for who she was. But she was wrong.
She scooted her chair a little closer to Dustin, her knees brushing up against his. “When I first got here, I felt like such a loser because the people at my school were all rich and had tons of money.” She whispered, and her southern accent twanged at the syllables. “Even at the barn, veryone is rich, and they go out and party all the time. I know exactly what you mean about feeling eighty. Goose is all I have. I'm so self concious riding in front of them, like such a po-dunk cowgirl. I know there watching me. I've never felt so inferior in my life.” She shrugged honestly. “I probably wouldn’t be out here if I didn’t have Goose with me. I’m not that brave.” She chuckled. She really wouldn’t be out here. Her fear of being alone was too strong. At least with Goose she had something. She wasn’t completely alone with her horse.
