Mason Finlay dropped Tanya and Larissa off at school and told them to go to after care till 6:00pm because he had a ton of paper work to attend to and would never get anything done with the twins in the house. His mind was also being distracted by the fact that he had found someone to help him with his horses until or even after he established his little firm and hired on full time workers.
Yesterday he had driven all the way to the crowed airport to await his son that he had only met twice. This was because his mother lived in the U.K. and he in america. Though his 6 year old son had come to stay with him until Mary could find a job and get some money to bring her little boy back. Of course he had offered her a large sum of money which she declined due to pride and the stubborn head of hers that she had always possessed.
Anyway driving away from the entrance of the school he made his way over to cross fire farms where he was to meet his perspective employee. From his car seat Mason heard his son talking to him. "Daddy are we almost to the horsey's?" his son asked with an obvious streak of horse loving in his blood. "Almost little man almost!" mason chuckled. 15 minutes later he pulled up in to Cross Fire farms and stepping out of the car he shuddered and pulled on a heavy winter coat. Unbuckling Charlie from his car seat he pulled him out of the car and off streaked his little boy. "Poor Lad, he's got the horse loving streak running through his veins." So chuckling he grabbed the little boys winter coat which he had neglected to put on and slammed and locked the doors before running to catch up with Charlie.
After the morning feeding and such had been done, which had consisted of some quiet interesting events. These included Charlie almost getting his fingers removed by one of the cranky stallions, and then Charlie a 6 year old boy, rightfully put the stallion in his place. Mason just watched in awe at the little boy mastering one of the meaner stallions in the barn. Oh boy did Charlie have horse taming in his veins.
His mind reverted back to the new comer who had just arrived at the front of the barn. Quickly making his way towards her, he told Charlie not to go in any of the horses stalls. Reaching the women he noticed she had a little girl. "Hello, I suppose you are Lena? I am Mason Finlay and this is my son Charlie..." Charlie had come racing down the barn aisle as soon as he saw a little girl by the womens side.

( i will stay, i will reign, i will wash the words and pain away ) Charlie had decided to take a few days off to visit his twin and his niece and nephew when Lena had told him about the job she was thinking of applying for. She needed it, badly, and if she got it, it would work out well, she would be able to be a full time mother and ride at once...and he had already said a few times that he would rather she find another horse to ride instead of Lilly. The Thoroughbred mare was too unpredictable, and if anything happened to her, there wouldn’t be anyone there to look after her kids. So, she had been avoiding riding the bay mare since she had arrived in Addison, even though she was itching to get back into the saddle. She would never consider riding Demon, however, he was just as bad as Lilly, if not more unpredictable, and she didn’t want to purely because riding him would make her think of Diego, something she was trying to push out of her mind. That part of her life was over, as far as she was concerned. If he wanted to see his kids when he got out, she wasn’t going to stop him, but she couldn’t be with him anymore.
The plan had been that Charlie was going to look after both Jessie and Jack that day, but the six year old had begged that Lena let her go to the barn with her. She couldn’t really see the harm in it, so she had agreed, and they left, leaving Charlie, Jack and the two Labradors at home to do whatever it was Charlie had planned for the day. Jessie was almost bouncing in her seat the whole way to Crossfire, staring out the window and pointing out every horse that she saw as they passed, quietening down when they pulled into Crossfire’s driveway however, knowing she had to be calm around the horses.
Jessie clung to Lena’s hand after they got out of the car, and walked towards the barn. “Okay sweetie, I have to go to this meeting with the man, so you have to be really good, alright?” she said to her as they walked, to which Jessie nodded in reply. She wasn’t too worried about her playing up, she was well behaved, thankfully, and knew it was important. They entered the familiar barn area, Lilly thrusting her head over her stall door, reaching for her owner when she saw her enter, but she didn’t get the chance to pet her, when a man, with a voice she recognised from speaking over the phone, approached her.
“Hey. Yes, I’m Lena,” she answered, offering him a smile, quite aware it was probably a little shy, nervous. Damn it, Diego, look what you’ve done to me, the thought ran through her head. Everything that had happened made her a little more reserved, a little less trusting. She had been lied to too many times now. “And, this is Jessie,” she said, watching her little girl smile shyly at Charlie.

"well hello there Jessie." mason smiled kindly at her. Turning his attention back to Lena, Mason wanted to get right down to business but before anything would happen mason had to get Charlie and Jessie squared away. "Charlie go grab buga's western saddle out of the tack room and I will set you up to ride. After only a minor mishap buga a halflinger gelding was all tacked up. "Charlie listen to me... Absolutely no going over a walk... Do you here me?" Charlie nodded solemnly though paused for a minute. "can Jessie get on buga too?" Mason was about to say yes of course but paused looking over to Lena. "I would say yes, though only because buga is the safest most relaxed pony ever, but you must ask her mom. Okay Charlie let me remind you that riding privileges will be taken if I find out that you have left the barn or ridden at anything above a walk!" Charlie went over to ask Lena.
Though he had to wait because mason had to get some rather unpleasant questions out of the way. Turning back he stated to her quite bluntly: "have you ever be on trial or had any other brush of the law? And are you pregnant?" those were the only personal questions he would ask for now.
"The plan for today is that I would love you to try out some specific horses for me. If that is okay of course?" he looked at her. "this is going to be process of elimination okay. This is a paid job so as seeing you made it through the process, you will be paid at the beginning of each month for the previous month of work. So before we begin my son has something to ask you. "may Jessie ride buga with me she is really really gentle and is a good horse!!"

( i will stay, i will reign, i will wash the words and pain away ) Lena was glad that Mason had his son there, she had worried a little about bringing Jessie, for all she could have known, he wouldn’t have liked kids, or might not have been appreciative of her bringing her daughter along to the trial. She listened to him speak to Charlie, hesitating a little when he asked Mason if Jessie could ride too, though out of the corner of her eye she could see Jessie’s eyes light up. She hadn’t ridden in ages, but Lena wasn’t sure...okay, Mason’s description of the pony in question sounded safe enough...and they would be nearby.
His next question, however, hit her like a tonne of bricks. She guessed she had expected something like it to be asked, but it still brought back awful memories of when they had held her for questioning. Even though it had only been for an hour or two, she hadn’t been allowed to see Jessie, or Jack, even though he had only been a few weeks old at the time, and she was still absolutely traumatised by it all. Though, they hadn’t thought she had any involvement in the thefts, it was procedure. She looked at Mason, finally finding the strength to speak after a few moments.
“My last partner...Jessie’s dad...was jailed six months ago. For horse theft...I’m not going to lie to you about it...I was questioned, but I didn’t have any involvement in it...you can check, if you need to,” she managed to say, drawing a shaky breath when she finished speaking. That honest sentence was either going to sit well with Mason, since she hadn’t kept it from him, or he wasn’t going to want anything to do with her. And here was the point of moving, even though nobody back in their old town had blamed her for it in the slightest, they all knew what had happened...they still knew, and it made her uncomfortable. “And, no, I’m not pregnant,” she added.
She looked down at Jessie, considering for a moment. “Okay. But...be careful, and remember the rules, and what Mason said, too,” she agreed, letting go of Jessie’s hand so she could go with Charlie.

Mason's face remained blank as she answered her question about criminal history. He pondered this for a few seconds before deciding that it didn't matter. He heard her shaky voice and looked up and he was shocked to see a almost scared look on her face and innocence. He had a fleeting moment where he wanted to embrace her and make her feel all better. He took 2 steps towards her and then abruptly stopped realizing that she was not his to comfort. Hearing the rest of her answer he was satisfied with her. "Come here, little Jessie" Holding out his hands he led her over to the halflinger gelding Mr. Bumble, he checked the girth and the halter. Then lifted Charlie right up on top of the pony and then picked up jessie and sat her right down behind Charlie. "Hold on tight now!" Mason chuckled. The gelding plodded along with his charges just up and down the aisle. Turning back to Lena, Mason smiled and beckoned her to follow him. "I have a couple of question just on your riding and preferences and such..." He smiled at her. Making his way up the aisle to the second to last stall on the left, where a bay stallion stuck his head out of the stall. chuckling when the horse made a silly face Mason swatted at him "come on we have a guest, lets put away the silly faces!" chortling Mason introduces Lena to one of his favorite mounts. "Lena this is Mento..." then all at once Mento's head disappeared out of sight. Only to bob back up again and giving on of his snorts. "Aww look he is bowing for you..." Mason turned back to Lena and started just asking simple questions. "Do you mind Riding stallions? What event do you prefer to show in? How experienced are you? Do you have any other mounts that you ride regularly and will you bring your daughter with you again."He was asking her so methodically, Mason didn't even notice that she had stopped about a hares breath away from his left side standing near the horses head. Finally recognizing that he shook his head an gave a small quiet chuckle for no apparent reason. Grabbing the halter and lead line which happened to be colored electric blue. Mason slipped them over Mento's head. Have brushed him earlier he threw the tack on and cinched the girth before handing over the black bridle reins to lena. "Mento is a stallion though you would never be able to tell from the way he acts around other mares, maybe women because he seemed to like you..." The Cherry bay hanoverian gave a quick snort bobbing his head up and down. Chuckling once again, mason followed her into the ring. "All I would like you to do is put him through his paces and get him all warmed up then if I like what I am seeing then we will try some of the jumps, supposing that you are a jumper not a dressage kind of person. Also he is very willing on both leg and voice commands and needs little to no encouragement from the rider. He also has a soft mouth so don't worry." Mason watched them go around and around the ring noticing her seat how her legs where positioned and then knew that if she would accept this job that he already had 3 horses in mind for her. Mento, Amera and Pride. She would look so nice on top of those horses. Mason also was having some trouble keeping her out of his mind, and keeping his mind on the task at hand finding her the correct horses to ride. Mason liked her so far well maybe a little more than liked. He was being absurd, no one could feel that way from just meeting someone, but low and behold there he was standing in the middle of the ring not watching how she was riding but Lena herself. Well, if his body and heart agreed then hey he wasn't going to stop them. Yes she was very pretty. Mason shook himself out of his own little world, before calling Lena over. "I love you riding style and you look so pretty on top of him, that I think that I am going to assign him and 2 other horses to you, You can get off if you like." Mason pulled out his blackberry and typed a few noted before saving and slipping it into his back pocket. Walking out of the ring he almost ran straight into Buga the pony, then he heard little giggles and saw Charlie raise his hand to high five Jessie. "You silly ones, I almost fell down, you guys are so sneaky!" Mason exclaimed a little exaggeration colored his voice but is a playful way. Mason took a step back and looked back at Lena. Shooing the children along he walked back down to Mento's stall and helped Lena un-tack before carrying the stuff to the tack room. Coming back out he open the door hurriedly and ran straight into Lena. Catching her before she could fall down, by a stroke of luck he had pulled her back a little to hard and she bumped into his chest. He noticed how soft her skin was. A little worried expression dominated his face. "Hey, I am sorry, are you okay? Didn't mean to almost make you fall down." Mason was almost painfully aware of how strikingly petite and pretty she was, and how god damned well he tucked up against him.

The man would be civil in his...request, so things started smoothly and nothing went off the rails, he rather liked not being in jail. He had Demon back and he had worked it out with Lena, there was one more thing he wanted to straighten out and this would be it. Once there he saw Mason with his arms around his ex and Diego walked over, one eyebrow raised, his stormy eyes taking everything in. "Not interrupting am I?" He asked, his voice holding a slight hint of irritation, this was out of habit however, so it was perfectly alright. Diego was suddenly barrelled by his daughter, who seemed to have jumped off a pony. Crazy girl, she got his mad riding skills. And by that he literally meant mad. Diego picked her up, smiling at her and she hugged him. His turned his gaze to Mason again, the smiling disappearing. "Diego. He asked, his eyes doing a once over of the scene again. Diego looked at Lena and smiled slightly, she probably thought blood would be shed and he was trying to reassure her that nothing bad would happen. Diego ran a hand through his blond hair, poking Jesse gently and playfully as she wiggled in his arms. "Hey sweetie, didn't think you could keep me away that easily did you?" He asked, smiling softly. He wanted to see Jack too but since he was only young, he was probably being baby sat by Charlie, he'd have to catch up with that.

( i will stay, i will reign, i will wash the words and pain away ) Mason didn’t seem to react at first, when she told him about Diego. The lack of reaction, at first, worried her, but then he seemed to decide it didn’t matter, taking Jessie over to Charlie and the pony he had asked if she could ride. Lena watched him lift both of the kids up, before they set off at a slow walk down the aisle. Once they were sorted, she followed Mason to the stall of a bay stallion, listening to him reel off a list of questions, holding back a soft laugh. He didn’t seem to take a breath, or notice that she had followed him until he turned and saw her standing next to him. “I don’t mind riding stallions, and I show in just about anything. And I’ve been riding since I was ten...so fifteen years,” she answered first, giving him a smile.
“I do have my mare, Lilly...but I’m thinking of selling her on, so I’m not sure...and will bringing Jessie be a problem? Because, I have a son as well, he’s just with his uncle right now...so I’m going to need to sometimes,” she continued, a little concerned about that...did that mean he didn’t want Jessie hanging around while she was riding?
She accepted the reins Mason handed to her, leading Mento towards the indoor arena, after giving him a quick pat. He looked like he had personality, which she liked...and he seemed a lot calmer than Lilly was, which was a blessing, although she wouldn’t be sure until she got on him. She listened to Mason’s instructions, nodding in understanding before she mounted Mento. It only took one round of the arena whilst warming up for her to figure out how well the horse responded, adjusting herself accordingly. It felt good to be riding a horse that wasn’t fighting her anywhere near as much as Lilly did. She followed through with Mason’s instructions, warming him up, putting him through his paces, then heading over a few of the jumps already set up in the arena. It felt like a good ride to her, but it was really his decision in the end.
After a few laps at a walk to cool him down, she halted Mento near Mason. So, it wasn’t just her that had thought it had gone well. She couldn’t seem to hide her relief as she dismounted, she needed this job badly, and now she had it. “Thank you,” Lena said, turning to look at him when her feet had hit the ground, before leading Mento out of the arena behind him.
Laughing at the kid’s antics, she led Mento back to his stall, beginning to untack him just as Mason came over to help her. Heading to the tack room a minute or two after he did, she was just about to round the corner, bridle slung over one shoulder, when he came around the other side of the door, accidentally barrelling into her, catching her just as she started to lose her balance. “No harm done, don’t worry about it...” she started, voice trailing off as she heard a hauntingly familiar voice behind her. Not even taking notice of how close she and Mason actually were right then, or how it would look, she turned her head, knowing that she really wasn’t hearing things when she heard “Charlie, stop! My dad’s here!” echo from just up the aisle, seeing Jessie almost throwing herself off the Haflinger and racing up the aisle, throwing herself at Diego.
She went pale, shocked. “How are you here? You’re meant to be in...” she said, unable to finish the sentence. She still hadn’t moved away from Mason, almost frozen in shock, trying to process what was going on.

Mason calmly watched the new comer almost wearily."of course not, Charlie would love to have a playmate, and I would love to meet the other little one, I love children."smiling softly at Lena, Mason answered her earlier question. Not connecting the pieces until the little girl named Jessie threw her self off the pony who didn't even bat an eye. Good old buga. Charlie quickly dismounted with surprising grace for a 6 year old and walked straight to the stranger. " who are you" Charlie asked his big green eyes looking up at the stranger. Mason was muttering under his breath to Lena. " I suppose this is your ex-fiancé?" he said this quiet enough that the man could not hear him before directly addressing the man.
"I dont suppose you are but seeing as you have already interrupted it wouldn't really matter..." mason was asking for it and he knew it. " excuse me that was very rude of me," he looked down at Lena who looked ghostly white and was clutching his arm looking like she was about to faint have a heart Attack or die of shock. Wrapping his arm more firmly around her waist though gently as not to make he uncomfortable. " my name is mason, mason finlay... You are?" he knew who he was but felt as if the man should say so to confirm. "oh yeah this is my son Charlie" pointing to the little boy standing next to Diego looking up At him.

He also saw the wary expression on the other man's face. Had he perhaps heard of Diego? Quite likely, depending. "Nice to see you too Lena. He said, seeing her plave expression. "I was let out early you see. And I wanted to speak to you." He said, looking down as a small child walked over to him, he raised an eyebrow. "I'm Lena's friend." He said simply. Diego's head snapped up as he heard the other man give him a smart ass response. He raised an eyebrow, about to give him an earful when the guy suddenly apologized to him. Wise. "Diego Masters" He said, waving a hand in dismissal. "So, Miss Cordell," It hurt him to say 'Miss Cordell' but he didn't feel the same, so not too nadly hurtful. "Can I talk to you?" He asked, his attention back to Lena and he gave a brief nod and Mason's introduction to the child, smirking at his name. Oh dear old Charlie, Lena's brother. However, he did get along with Bryce, so that was quite alright.

( i will stay, i will reign, i will wash the words and pain away ) The smirk on Diego's face sort of made Lena want to reach over and slap it off his face. No, she didn't hate him, he was just being an ass, she knew him well enough to know that. Of course she was going to be shocked that he was there, standing in the barn aisle at Crossfire. He hadn't said a word to her about maybe getting out early...then again, he probably hadn't in case it didn't happen. Still, she would have liked to have known, it would've been nice to be a little more prepared for it. She heard Mason's voice muttering into her ear, asking if Diego was who he was, to which she nodded a mute reply, watching Jessie cling to Diego like a limpet to a rock.
She didn't realise that she had been clinging to Mason that hard until he spoke, she must have been in shock to not realise she had his arm in an iron grip, perhaps to stop herself from falling straight over in shock right there and then. She forced herself to loosen her grip as much as she could, feeling him tighten his arm around her waist, watching Diego warily. She frowned. It was definitely going to be a 'clash of the titans' situation between them. And she wasn't sure who was going to win, though she would put a stop to anything before it went overboard.
"No, I'm glad to see you...but you could've saved me the heart attack by telling me before you showed up," she said, letting out a deep breath, running a hand through her blonde hair, giving him a reproachful look, although there wasn't really much irritation to it. Just weary, tired already, before he had even gotten to his point.
"Do you really need to ask if you can talk to me?" she answered, the ghost of a smile playing on her lips, though she kept it from breaking into a grin, worried about how Mason would react. No, she didn't feel the same about Diego anymore, he ought to know that.

Mason continued to stare straight at Diego Lena's ex-Fiancée with a reproachful expression mixed with slight disdain. Mason already didn't like him, feeling his temper starting to bubble up under his usually unflappable nature. Mason new right then if it came to a fight there was absolutely no way that that Diego person would get a win out of him with out a couple of broken bones, black eyes and bruises. None of this was betrayed in the slightest on his face. In truth deep down that he was a little jealous that he had Lena's children or... stopping himself right there he remembered that it didn't matter. He had Lena now and there was absolutely no way that he would give her up, and least of all to an attempted murderer and horse thief.
Listening to Lena a little smirk appeared across his face before returning to the blank stare before. Lena was tense and mason could feel it. A little frown appeared on his face though it disappeared the same second, when he asked to talk with Lena. Talking to Lena "Would you like me to go so you can talk to your ex..." mason enjoyed the last few lines a little to much but not really enough to provoke anything. "Or stay?" he asked directly to Lena. He could feel Diego getting annoyed and was taking a little bit to much enjoyment out of it. As if just remembering something which he actually had. Mason spoke to Lena again. "Hey after your done talking with him I need to ask you about something involving christmas presents. Okay?" planting a Kiss on the top of her head he waited his instructions.

* all the world's a stage,

"If you have something to say pretty boy, spit it out, don't be shy." He said, an arrogant smirk crossing his face. He had been involved in crime for a long time, his bark was by no means bigger than his bite. Diego turned his gaze back to Lena, smiling. "Well, I wasn't exactly sure if I would be coming. And princess, He said, looking at Mason. "I'm not going to hurt her, we're perfectly fine here without you, really. After all, I've known her for years. He said, of course he was still going to be protective of Lena, it was hard not to be.
Diego's expression suddenly turned murderous, taking an instinctive step forward. "If you're talking about presents for my kids, you can forget it. They're mine, not yours pretty boy. And if you so much as look at them sideways, I will ban you from seeing them and believe me when I say I will." He said, his expression icy and voice dripping with venom. The other man had a touch of arrogance to his demeanor and this amused Diego, by no means did he want to fight, verbal or physical, but he was protective by nature. "I guess Mason could stay anyway. I'm actually moving here, so you're going to see a lot more of me. In fact you just might overdose." His voice had an underlying threat to it, a warning if you will. "I mean what I said too. I don't want him acting like they're his children because they're not. I don't want him acting like he's there father." His voice was final and in his mind it was final.
The other man had unfortuately triggered one of Diego's many buttons, it was hard not to really. Jessie was just looking from her father, to her mother and to the other man, Mason, she seemed oblivious enough. Diego was a little worked up about how it seemed he was the only one who got punished for being in the horse theft, nothing could be done now though, so he'd let it go for now. He knew that Lena, thank god for her kindness, would probably try to come to some sort of compromise, it was in her nature and if Diego was really not pleased with something, she'd not allow Mason to do it, or at least Diego hoped so. This was one of those things he wasn't comfortable with, she'd probably picked up on that however.

( i will stay, i will reign, i will wash the words and pain away ) Lena didn't even get the chance to reply to Mason before Diego spoke up again. Now, she wasn't really sure if him staying through whatever Diego had to say would be a good idea, but she didn't get much choice in the matter. She just had to listen on in slight horror as he spat it all out, brow furrowing in slight annoyance at his tone of voice.
"Firstly, don't speak to me in that tone of voice, I don't appreciate, or deserve it," she started, drawing herself to her full height, gaining that stubborn, no nonsense look he probably knew better than to tackle...but then again, he probably would anyway.
"You know full well I won't let anyone take your place, I told you that before we moved, so please, drop the attitude. If I didn't want you around them, I wouldn't have told you where we were moving," Lena continued. Despite her mother's contributions to the decision, where her advice was to cut all ties with him, she hadn't taken it. She wasn't the sort of person to do something like that, her kids would be the ones to suffer from it.
She took a breath. She needed to calm down, relax. Or else she'd probably end up snapping someone's head off...uncharacteristic, for her, but she was just so tense at the moment. And tired. Six months old and Jack still hadn't picked up a desirable sleeping pattern.
"And...I'll talk to both of you about presents before I agree to anything, alright?" she finished, letting out an exasperated sigh, running a hand through her hair.

Diego looked murderous for mason even suggesting giving his children presents. "You would ban me from seeing your children because I would love to give them a present" Mason raised one eyebrow in surprise. "yes you are their father and no I am not trying to take your place as there father, for christs sake I already have twin daughters and a son. I have plenty of fatherly duties on my own, but just stop for a second and look. Look at lena have you even noticed the dark circles around her eyes? Have you ever thought that while you were away that lena may have been trying to keep herself afloat along with her 2 children. I am not saying that there wasn't any outside help at all, charlie has been helping her very much as I understand it. Good chap Charlie is but, dear god, think about what she must have gone through. I swear I am not trying to take your place as father. Your daughter alone leaping into your arms should be enough information to tell you that she will always love you more than me. I just wanted to give them something that will make lena, jessie and jak happy." every word in that little schpeal rang clear, honest and sincere. Mason really didn't want to take his place he just wanted them to find him tolerable at least and lovable at most.

"I know very well what she's been through. And she's not the only one that's had it rough. You, however, seemed to have cruized. I have tried to help as much as I could, I went to some utmost extremes. So don't you ever try to tell me what she's been through because I know exactly what she's been through and she is not the only one so don't give me a speech about such things. You know nothing and don't act like you do." His voice was dreadfully icy, his patience was wearing less than thin now. He actually thought of Andy at this point, she usually kept him in line, especially with Lyric, Lyric had pushed him a little far and he had all but almost snapped. Diego could have gone further and been a lot nastier, Lena would have known this at least. He addressed Lena next, his grey eyes duller than usual. "I didn't use a tone that I was aware of, I'm sorry if I did." He said.
Diego didn't respond, his expression remaining icy. Diego's nature was unfortunately, not the best, Lena knew this and was patient about it usually, this was probably one of those times. Diego hadn't picked up the virtue of patience so this wasn't helping in anyway whatsoever. Diego's jaw clenched at Mason saying he wanted to make them all happy and he tried to calm himself down. Mike had assumed he had bipolar of sorts or something, he was probably right. "And so do I but not from /you/." He said, looking at Lena as she spoke though he gave no indication to whether he agreed or not.
