( There's a song that you can find )
The sound of Athena’s hoof beats drumming against the dirt ground of the arena as I nudged her into a canter was somewhat comforting, relaxing. I aimed her straight for the first jump I had set up, the mare responded quickly, knowing what was coming up. Ears pricked, alert, waiting for me to tell her what to do, she didn’t rush at the jump as we approached, keeping her steady rhythm, executing the takeoff with near perfection, and sticking the landing with almost the same ease. My sister, Keely, had trained the grey Irish Sport Horse mare for me, actually, she had bought her for me a few years ago. The twenty five year old had her own demons to battle with, but she had never taken it out on her family, or her horses, and I missed my big sister.
The rest of the course was taken just as easily by my beloved mare as the first jump had been, once we had cleared the last jump, I gave her a good pat on the neck as I gradually slowed her down to a walk. At least riding was one thing that was going right these days. Athena bobbed her head, still exhilarated from the jump round, walking at a brisk pace, but still remembering to listen to me as I moved her to circle the arena, taking my feet out of the stirrups as I walked her around to cool her down.
“If only life was that easy, hey girl?” I spoke to the mare, scratching her neck. I knew I was going to have to take myself out of university now, I barely had a cent to my name. I could always go back later, if I wanted. Work, university and riding left me with no time to just have fun, really, and I was starting to suffer from that too. I had never really felt lonely before, but now I sort of did. And the feeling wasn’t nice.
