It wasn’t every day that Logan was basically forbidden to go in to a meeting with Alfie. Not that Alfie was the one doing the forbidding, rather, the man he was trying to make a deal with. He had insisted that they had to be alone, just the two of them, and not even his trusted valet was allowed to be with them, so Alfie had asked...well, not asked, more told, him to leave until the meeting was over. It must have been important, if he was willing to let himself be ordered around like that...it wasn’t often that the businessman let others dictate the conditions of a meeting. So Logan had left, with no fuss, he probably wouldn’t have found much interesting in the meeting if he had been allowed to stay anyways, so it didn’t really bother him.
He wandered outside. It was chilly out, not horribly cold, but with enough of a bite that caused him to stuff his hands in the pockets of his coat, watching a light stream of steam coming from his mouth as he breathed. Okay, maybe it was a bit cold.
The museum was next door, a few park benches sitting outside it for any visitors or passersby who wanted to sit for a while, which was where he headed. He briefly considered entering the museum...but then figured, there would probably be some sort of entry fee, and it really wouldn’t be worth it when Alfie could call him back at any time to leave. Maybe, on a day off, if he couldn’t think of anything else to do with his time. At least back in Wales, he had family, friends he could go visit, and he knew his way around. But here was different and he didn’t really have much reason to ask Alfie for time off, so he hadn’t taken any since they had flown over.
Taking a seat on an empty bench, he leant back against the wooden back of the seat, running a hand through his hair, causing it to stick up more than it usually did, eyes roaming around the area, bored already.

I NEVER SAW THE SIGNS! To those that were native Texans, they could practically smell winter as it lurked around the corner. The colder air and sudden lack of sun was one of the many signs of the brutal changing of seasons, and Faith was for sure one of the many Texans to begin to prepare for the long, cold, and wet winter that was looming over the horizon, just waiting to dump gloom all across the state. For one, she began to pack away all summer clothes and suddenly wore fewer shorts and more jeans and sweat pants, her shirts were rarely cotton, either a mix of wool or silk or a jacket. She would not be caught unawares and freezing cold.
Today, she added coffee to her routine.
Downtown had always had an interesting appeal to her, the high rise buildings, the museum district, the zoo, the aquarium, the many high-level restaurants, it was like home away from home for her. Today, she started off with a visit to the museum of science, her parents had just bought an art gallery there and she figured she may as well put her free admission to the test, all she had to do was show her license and she was in, they also informed her she could always bring a friend if she wanted that would get in for free. As much as she enjoyed fine art and ancient fine art, she couldn’t see herself using it regularly.
On her way out of the museum she stopped for a coffee, and somehow she ended up with two.
Outside was colder than when she had entered the building a few hours ago. Shivering slightly she set her two drinks down and zipped up her jacket. Picking the warm drinks back up she started to head back to nowhere before noticing a man sitting on a bench looking rather lonely and very cold. Walking up to him she held out a coffee filled hand and said, Hi there, my name is Faith. You look lonely and cold, would you like a coffee? She smiled brightly at the man, it didn’t matter if he was a total stranger, in her book there were no strangers, just people she had yet to make friends with.

It wasn’t anywhere near as cold as it could get on a fall morning back in Wales, but Logan was half wishing that he had decided to choose a more sheltered location to sit whilst he waited for Alfie. Mainly because, sitting still for too long was just going to make him colder, and it was pretty exposed to any small gusts of the cold wind that blew past in short gusts occasionally.
There were so many people. He missed his quieter homeland. Of course, it had its moments, but even the busiest towns seemed nowhere as crowded as they did in America. Maybe it had something to do with the more high paced lifestyles. He himself had grown up on a small property, antiquated white house, most of the yard taken up by his mother’s vegetable garden, though there had been plenty of nearby woodland for a young boy to run wild in.
Logan was distracted from his thoughts by a rather bright, bubbly voice popping up from beside him. He started for a second, recollecting himself as he zoned in on the source of the voice, a slender blonde haired woman, probably around his own age, if his reckoning was correct, standing in front of him, holding one of the two cardboard cups of coffee she was carrying out to him.
He considered her only briefly. What did he have to lose? He had to make friends somehow...even if Alfie made it difficult sometimes. He couldn’t even...wow, he couldn’t even remember the last time he had been in a proper relationship. Actually, come to think of it, every time he formed something even remotely resembling one Alfie decided he needed him on a constant basis, ruling out any days off.
“Sure, thanks,” he answered, realising that he hadn’t answered her, pulling his hands from his pockets and accepting the cup she was offering him.
He returned her grin. “Take a seat, if you want. I don’t bite, promises,” he said, the customary cheeky ring to his voice present, of course.

I NEVER SAW THE SIGNS! On a day like today, most people were smart enough to hide inside until the coldest part of the day passed, and for those that had to be out in the gloom, they were aptly prepared to deal with the frigid temperatures. But then again, Texans happened to be rather dramatic when it came to the cold. Thick skinned and remarkably tolerable of 100+ degree weather, but it seemed that asking them to deal with any temperature below 50 was too much of a task for their heat-oriented minds and body temperature regulators to handle, it’s like they suddenly turned into computer-ridden viruses and shut down with the biggest blue screen of death that they could offer otherwise known as breaking out the ski jackets and fuzzy ugg boots.
At least they were trying.
However, Faith couldn’t really differ from the pack when it came to her way of dealing with cold. She was just as wrapped up as a kid pretending to be a mummy for Halloween would be. A long over coat that reached well past mid thigh covered most of her jeans, underneath she wore a long sleeved blouse, her hair was left down, even though she knew that eventually the humidity would mess up her style. The man looked up at her, as if drawn from deep thought and accepted the coffee, and Faith gave him a warm smile and when he offered her a seat she nodded her head slightly and sat down beside him.
Even though she’d been sitting a lot, but it’d be rude to remain standing, that’d be a sign that she had better things to do than talk with him for no good reason.
Sipping on her coffee in a leisurely manner she sat back on the bench, the wood pressing into her spine and she turned her head and looked at the man, he seemed to be about her age, if not a tad older. What she really wanted to know (other than his name) was why he was outside when there were plenty of other decent places to be on such a cold day, Is there any particular reason as to why, unlike the rest of the city, you’re outside? Do you need a ride somewhere? My car’s just around the corner if you need a ride. She was concerned as to why he was out here alone, Faith didn’t like alone or the idea of alone, and she’d cure the world one lonely person at a time.
Eventually.

She sat next to him at his offer, and Logan took a mouthful of coffee while he waited. At least it was decent, the last time he had gotten coffee around here it had been absolutely awful, and he had ended up throwing it out after the first sip. He dropped his arm, resting the cup on his thigh, one hand clasped carefully around it so it wouldn’t tip, and he leaned back against the bench again. Maybe he should have thought of getting a coffee himself earlier on, it was definitely helping.
He chuckled at her words, a grin spreading across his face.
“No, I don’t need a lift anywhere, but thanks for the offer, anyway,” he answered, directing his grin at her.
He ran a hand through his hair again, stifling a yawn. He was still getting used to the time change between here and Wales, he had never been one to snap quickly out of jet lag, though with the travelling he did and Alfie’s requirements, it was getting easier.
“Just waiting for my employer to finish an important business meeting, though god knows when he’ll finish,” he continued. He was used to having to wait for Alfie to finish with these things, they took hours sometimes...well, he definitely hoped that this particular meeting wasn’t going to take that long, he refused to be stuck hanging around in the cold for him to seal whatever deal he was making.
Logan realised, that the woman had offered him a coffee, and was now having a conversation with him, and he hadn’t even bothered asking her name. “I’m sorry, I feel incredibly rude for not introducing myself yet. I’m Logan,” he said, offering her a hand to shake.

I NEVER SAW THE SIGNS! Though she had grown up a mostly thoroughly spoiled only child to a pair of parents who did their best to hide the grief of losing a first child by pampering her to no ends, Faith had a surprising amount of generosity and kindness. Most young adults her age had an ego bigger than the entire Eurasia continent, so big they could barely fit through doors without a little push from the person behind them. Sure, she had her own set of self-admirations, but she was careful to keep it in check around certain people, not wanting to get scolded for having a pompous attitude.
As, that just wasn’t who Faith felt she was.
Most people however, believed that she shouldn’t be so nice to others, that she should be a bitch all the time. Obviously, she did not keep her sugary sweet attitude 24/7, with the odd occurrence of her true personality showing through the possibly faked kindness. For now though, she’d play off the sweet innocent young woman until someone called her out on it, and even then it was highly unlikely that she’d change, after all, it took a lot to make people change, and Faith was as stubborn as they came.
By his smile at her question, she figured he was just fine.
What intrigued her however, was why of all places he chose outside to wait for his employer. Sipping on her coffee she watched the occasional car pass by and slightly turned her head as people trickled in and out of the buildings around them, hoping none of them was his employer just yet (she had barely gotten a chance to know the man sitting next to her!). Nodding her head slightly as he introduced himself she grinned at him and said, Faith, I think I already said my name, but I was probably talking way too fast, nice to meet you Logan. If you don’t mind me asking, what made you pick outside to wait for your boss? And more importantly, what is your job?

I considered her question as to why I was out, in the cold, when I could have picked, I don’t know, a coffee shop or something, somewhere out of the weather and probably more pleasant to sit at. I wasn’t really sure myself, perhaps I had just taken the first seat I had come across, too busy lost in my own thoughts to really care. I shrugged, taking another mouthful of the coffee Faith had given me before opening my mouth to reply to her.
“That...is a good question. And one I’m afraid I don’t really have an answer for, I guess it was just the most convenient spot at the time,” I answered, a crooked half smile spreading across my face.
I laughed. Explaining what I was to Alfie to people I didn’t know always held some sort of amusement with me, I guess, despite being called his ‘valet’, I didn’t really have a set job, I pretty much was a jack of all trades, when it came to working for Burton A Harper the second. Half the time it was just easier to say I was his personal assistant, it seemed to go down better with a lot of the people I spoke to. Then again, most of the interaction I had was with businessmen, and people like that git, Theodore Uppingham...yes, I would forever think of him as an utter git, I doubted that my impression of the snobbish English lord would ever change after our encounter with him the other day...so when I started trying to crack a joke about my job position with any of them it was often looked upon with disdain.
“I am...a personal assistant, if you will, to a Welsh businessman and entrepreneur, by the name of Burton A Harper the second...or Alfie, for short. Or Alfie’s bitch, if you would prefer,” I answered, grinning fully at her now.

I NEVER SAW THE SIGNS! Never in her 19 years of life, had she ever been made to work for something, or anything for that matter. She was the product of a spoiled lifestyle, with the slight assumption that most everyone around her had something for her and there was little that’d keep her from getting what she wanted. Faith was a very grabby, takey type of person. There was little someone could do to keep her from ever getting what she wanted; like a determined leader on a warpath, she’d get to her goal even if metaphorical bloodlust was the only answer to her desires.
This was why sometimes, she had a hard time connecting with the working human being.
Naturally, when presented with interaction with someone who did nothing but work for what they had, Faith was inclined to deep down, feel sorry for them and spoil them until the sun turned blue. She often times wanted the ‘underprivileged’ to know the joys of weightless posterity that she enjoyed. A lot of people said that rich people weren’t happy, but Faith was perhaps one of the happiest rich people in the world. She knew she had everything she needed and didn’t necessarily feel a great need for more (at the moment).
When Logan spoke of his profession, she took a sip of her coffee then smiled at his little joke.
Faith’s parents had a lot of personal business assistants, but she had never really liked any of them. However, she had to admire their versatility, regardless of her own personal feelings for them. It always fascinated her how they could flawlessly move from one task to another, whether it be writing up notes or ordering important supplies for the business. It took a lot of trust for one to become a personal assistant, Well, he must trust you a lot to let you be his bitch. She smiled jokingly at him.

I took another mouthful of coffee, waiting for her to speak. If one had asked me five years ago, what I would be doing with my life at this point in time, I probably never would have pictured that I would still be working for Alfie. I had desperately needed a job at the time, and he had just fired his last valet. My mother had worked as a cook in the Harper’s household kitchen, and he had really hired me on a whim, thinking it would be amusing, I presumed. I guess he hadn’t counted on it actually working out, and now I was fairly sure he wasn’t going to let me leave without a fight. Though, I didn’t have any intention of leaving yet, I still needed employment, I had no reason to leave, and despite his personality, Alfie was a good employer...and a friend.
I laughed. It had taken a while for Alfie to completely trust me, and now he almost told me anything without afterthought. And I suppose there had to be a certain level of trust when it came to the person who organised your food.
“I guess he does,” I agreed, smiling at Faith. Well, at least the girl seemed to have a sense of humour, I spent far too much of my time around uptight people as it was, so anyone who played along with my jokes was good in my books.
Rubbing the back of my neck, I held back a yawn. At least I was getting over the jet lag, however slowly. “So, I’ve told you my story. What’s yours? If you don’t mind me asking,” I asked, adding in the last part of my sentence as an afterthought, the thought that some people got touchy if you asked them about themselves occurring to me as I started speaking.

I NEVER SAW THE SIGNS! Faith felt that her story was as boring as it got. Without ever having to work for a single thing in her life, she didn’t have much excitement in her life. Sure she could tell people the stories of all her worldly travels her parents had taken her on as a kid, or all the influential leaders she had met; but believe it or not, she rarely liked to flaunt her money; it was only when it came to horses that she preferred to let people know of her monetary status, other than that she often times felt like an outcast of society, living in a world where people with money were hard to trust.
And friends even harder find.
When Logan asked about her life story she toyed with the edge of the plastic covering on the cup of her coffee, her thump running over the words etched in the top, something about caution and the product being hot. She found it so sad that such warnings had to be put on coffee so people would know that the product they had ordered would be hot and could possibly cause them damage if they drank it too quickly or did not provide adequate enough time for it to cool down. Shrugging she looked at Logan and said, Hah, well my life is most certainly not as interesting as yours. Um, I’ve recently moved out of my parent’s house and I’m currently living on my own, can’t say I’ve had to work much in my life, uh I’ve ridden horses since I was six, I have travelled a lot as a kid, but that kinda slowed down… Sitting back on the bench she smiled at Logan and said, Like I said, not very exciting.

I listened to Faith speak with interest. To me, everyone was interesting, in their own way...though then again, I had met some extremely boring people in my day. And she didn’t seem half as boring as she made herself out to be, in my opinion. My interest piqued even more when she said she rode horses. “Oh, you ride?” I echoed her, leaning forward, elbows resting on my knees.
“I ride...well, used to. I haven’t had a decent ride in ages now; I ended up pretty much having to give up when I started working for Alfie. Sold my horse to a friend, didn’t think it was fair of me to keep him when I didn’t get to spend as much time with him anymore, or compete, so now it’s pretty much just every now and again, when I get the chance,” I said, running a hand through my hair, making the curls go a little wilder than they had been sitting before.
I straightened up again, grinning at her. “And I wouldn’t say that’s boring. I would call it normal, probably, but not boring,” I said.
“I guess working for Alfie is interesting, in its own way...well, I’m probably the only person alive who can call their employer a git to their face and just have him think it’s amusing,” I said, taking another mouthful of coffee.

I NEVER SAW THE SIGNS! Faith had been riding horses for as long as she could remember. In fact, there was not a time that Faith could remember when she did not own horses. Her parents hadn’t’ been big in the horse business, but with their money it didn’t really matter. Maybe it was one of those ‘loved them since she was a child’ thing for Faith. Fawning over dapple grey ponies in children’s books and shoving her face onto a car’s window every time they passed a horse farm to get a better look at the world that she so desperately wanted to be a part of.
It seemed that her interest in horses had caught Logan’s.
This pleased her. She smiled at him as he brightened up and spoke of his own equine experiences. She nodded slowly, listening like the good girl she’d been taught to listen like. When he said he rode whenever he could, she got the strangest idea, Well, maybe the next time you’ve got some free time on your hands, you could come ride one of my horses, I bet they’d love to have someone else other than me riding them. She grinned at him, knowing that Rocky would probably love having a different rider. She then listened to him speak of his relationship with ‘Alfie’, and it was her turn for her curiosity to be tugged on. Taking a sip of her coffee she looked at him and said, Where did you meet Alfie? And how long have you known him? …If you don’t mind me asking that is.

I remembered exactly what got me into the equestrian world when I was younger. I had grown up on a property, albeit a small one, but my mother and father had a few horses between them, they didn’t really compete themselves, it was more of a leisure thing, they both loved the animals, and just rode for pleasure. They bought me a stubborn asshat of a Shetland pony when I was young, and my riding experiences started in our paddocks or on trail rides in the nearby woods with my parents. I slowly moved towards the local barn as I got older, where I learnt more, and started competing.
I grinned at Faith. “I’d really like that, actually,” I answered. I had to admit, I was itching to get back in the saddle, I hadn’t been riding in quite a while now. Some of the Harpers were into horses, but not Alfie so much, he didn’t seem keen to ride unless he had to. Oh well, I knew it wasn’t for everyone, and he was usually busy anyway. I did have to wonder about how willingly he would let me take a day off to go riding...especially now that it seemed that I had someone to go with, in the form of an attractive young woman. I could almost picture the look of terror on his face now.
“Well, my mum worked in the Harper family’s kitchen...they have a fairly large estate over in Wales...for most of my life. I didn’t have much to do with him when I was younger, really. I was twenty when he offered me a job, I’m fairly sure he thought it would be amusing more than useful at the time, but it’s been about six years now and he hasn’t fired me yet, so I’m guessing that I’ve been doing things right,” I answered, after a few moments thought.
