We're the new face of failure ( Prettier and younger but not any better off ) Lucas had finally convinced himself that buying a horse wouldn’t be such a bad idea, after all. There had been a gelding he was meant to be looking at that day...a six year old Trakhener gelding by the name of Mariannis, Mars for short...but he had arrived at Crossfire at the moment the owner rang, having to cancel and reschedule for another day for some reason. He sat in his car in the barn’s parking lot, almost feeling the urge to bash his head against the steering wheel in frustration. He hadn’t ridden in months, and quite frankly, it was beginning to annoy him. “Yeah, it’s fine, next week is good for me,” he spoke into his phone through gritted teeth, hanging up after a hasty farewell a few moments later.
Well, he was here already, so he may as well wander around for a bit. He wasn’t due at work until that night, being on the dinner service at Providence, instead of his usual breakfast, lunch and dinner. He had been working almost nonstop for three weeks now, and hadn’t had much time off, so the head chef had told him to take it easy that week, giving him a total of five services instead of the average twenty one services he had been working. His days had been sleep, work, go home, sleep more, work, repeat lately, he was surprised he managed to last that long without cracking it already.
It was a cool morning, he could feel the weather beginning to get colder as it got further into fall. He wasn’t particularly looking forward to the colder weather, he was Australian, even in winter it didn’t get as cold as it got over in the States, so summer was more to his liking, even if it wasn’t as hot as it usually got back home. Getting out of his car, he locked the door behind him, he doubted anyone would break in, besides, the truck next to his remained unlocked, as did a few others he saw...but it was just an automatic reaction. Back in the tiny town he hailed from Down Under, you could leave your car unlocked right in the centre of town and nobody touched it, everybody knew everybody so the chances of stealing and getting away with it were slim.
He wandered into the barn, pushing his aviators up so they were sitting on his head, not needing them in the dimmer light inside the barn. He had been there a few times since he had been in Addison, but not usually for long. And he had only met two other riders there, and being the social person he was, two acquaintances in a new town just wasn’t enough to keep him going for too long. A horse thrust their head over a stall door, nickering and reaching out to him impatiently after he had been walking up the barn aisle for a few minutes, so he stopped, giving it a scratch on the neck as his eyes roamed around the aisle, searching for any other signs of life besides himself.

you heard that i was trouble , BUT YOU COULDN'T RESISTJ U S T T A K E A B I T E L E T M E S H A K E U P Y O U R W O R L D- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -“Less than a minute left!” Alexandra Sappington, number 27, heard her coach call from the other side of the field. That was the signal. Number 27 was the ‘secret weapon’ of the team. She had already scored a goal and had an assist, but the score was still tied. The ball was kicked out of bounds. Alex ran up to her teammate who was about to take the throw in. She winked at her and the girl passed her the ball. Alex had taught herself an amazing trick, one of those mind boggling ones, along with many of the other tricks that she learned. Though this one was special, she only did it once a game.
Alex picked the ball up with her hands and ran into the line where the throw in was supposed to be. She did a handstand on top of the ball, flipped over landing on her feet and hurled the ball halfway down the grassy field. The soccer ball hit the intended target, number 3 on her team. She ran onto back onto the field, clapping her hands together once signaling for a lead pass. Number three passed her the ball. A girl on the opposing team ran up to Alex and slide-tackled her. Alex effortlessly pushed the ball forward and leaped over the girl’s legs.
She dribbled the ball up the sideline and toward the other team’s net. Another obstacle stood in her way. A huge girl that was maybe twice her size, charged at her. Without thinking, Alex pushed the ball a bit to the right and pulled off a seamless ‘Mara Donna’, passing the defender. That was it. Now it was just her and the goalkeeper. She ran into the top of the eighteen-yard box faster than anyone had ever seen in that game. She approached the penalty kick area as the keeper was coming out to make the save. Alex mad a wildly angular shot into the top left corner of the goal from the right side. The keeper dove and missed the save by mere inches. The ball soared into the top corner of the net and finally hit the back, confirming the goal.
There was a wild roar from the sidelines and players from the Addison High soccer team jumped on Alex, tackling her to the floor. The whistle blew, signaling the end of the game. The screams from the sideline became even louder. The rest of the Addison team ran onto the field and added to the pile on top of Alex as the other team walked off the field with their heads hanging low. There was a distinct difference between the Addison supporters and the supporters of the opposing team. The Addison High fans were cheering and slapping one another high fives, while the other supporters stood there gaping in astonishment, their mouths still open.
The girl managed to weasel her way out of the bottom of the dog pile and walked with the rest of her team off the field. They stood in a line; Alex pushed up to the front, and shook the other team’s hands. “Good game,” she said politely to each player on the other team. She went and sat down near her bag, taking her cleats and shin guards off, and replacing them with her flip-flops while receiving numerous pats on the shoulder. The redhead smiled up at all of them. A few of her teammates asked her if she wanted a ride home. “I’m not actually going home. Do you think you could drop me off at Crossfire?” Alex asked politely. The girls agreed, she gathered her bags and hopped in the car with them.
The car pulled up into the parking lot of the stable and Alex popped out of the car. She waved to her teammates. One of them shouted out of the window “Great game.” To that Alex replied, “It was a great game, an amazing way to end the season,” as she turned around and walked toward the barn. As she heard the car back out of the parking lot, she turned around, holding her hand up with the ‘sign of the horns’, while sticking her tongue out at them and then continued walking.
Alex reached the main barn where her two horses were being kept and walked up the isle. The girl was wearing her soccer hoodie, short soccer shorts and flip-flops. She passed a man playing with her horse Zazz and stopped at Rufio’s stall next to him. She placed her bags up against the stall and pulled her hair out of the scruchie, shaking her head a bit. “Hey there,” Alex said with a slight hint of a flirtatious tone, “I see you’ve met my boy Zazz.” She smiled and bent over, reaching into her bag to get her riding boots. Alex had a boyfriend, whom she really and truly cared about, but who says a girl can’t have some fun now and again?

We're the new face of failure ( Prettier and younger but not any better off ) Lucas missed having a horse. He had one, back in Australia, a Thoroughbred Australian Stock Horse mixed gelding, not one he particularly used for showing when he felt like it, mainly just for pleasure. He acted so differently around horses than he did with people. Less like an asshole, and more like a human being. He knew it wasn’t likely that he was ever going to act any different around other people; it was just his personality, and the lack of a filter between his brain and his mouth that prevented him from spewing out statements that ended up pissing people off. At least with a horse you could tell it to get lost and it wouldn’t take any offense to the words. Actions spoke louder than words, definitely, between animals and people.
The slap of shoes against the barn floor caught his attention, a younger girl was walking up the aisle, the horse he had been giving attention craned his head towards her, as if he recognised her. Well, what do you know. He always managed to start paying attention to one of the horses in the barn just as their owner came along. Oh well, he was a big boy, he’d live. Plus, it couldn’t hurt to talk.
He picked up the flirtatious tone to the girl’s voice, a half grin appearing on his face. She looked a little young for him, but it wasn’t as if he would actually do anything, if that was the case. A touch of flirting would be okay, he knew when to back off.
“Hey,” he answered, keeping it simple, for now. He gave Zazz another swift pat on the neck before dropping his hand from the horse’s body, letting it fall loosely by his side, pulling the other hand out of the pocket of his jeans. “Looks like I have,” he said, chuckling. Hmm, he was a bit off his game today. Perhaps he was a little disheartened over his cancelled trial. Wait, Lucas, disheartened? Probably not, he was probably just off his game a little.
“I’m Lucas,” he decided to introduce himself, extending a hand towards the girl.
