enemy, familiar friend my beginning and my end Claiming a spot on one of the museum's sparse benches, Scout looked out over the immense Galactic exhibit. Science had always sparked an interest within her along with art - here she could enjoy both of her pleasures. She reached a delicate hand into the large leather bag at her feet and removed a pad of paper and a pencil.
Carver laid beneath the bench obviously enthused with his reprieve from work. The employees weren't so happy when Scout brought him in, but he was her service dog and by law was required access to any public place that she happened to enter. It didn't matter if it was a restaurant, a store, the theater, etc. Wherever she went.. he went. Rubbing the chocolate lab's ear she smiled as he closed his warm amber eyes, dosing off into a well deserved nap. He was a good dog - one who enjoyed his job. She'd never received a dog who didn't want to work, all of them had been loyal workers and constant companions. They allowed her to do more things without the risk of serious injury or even death. It wasn't easy being completely deaf; it made the most nonessential everyday task dangerous, however, with the help of her dogs she was able to lead a relatively normal life.
Glancing around the exhibit, Scout tried to find something that sparked her artistic inspiration. She settled on the large image that showed the milky way and several other minuscule galaxies surrounding it. Dragging the pencil across the confines of the paper, she watched as the multitude of lines slowly began to take the shape of the drawing's reference.
After thirty odd minutes of constant erasing lines and shapes, then redrawing them, she was finally finished and proud of the final outcome. Scout stared at the drawing for a few moments and then set it aside and watched as a group of people passed by her. She wished she could hear what they were saying and the fact that no one could really hold a 'conversation' with her totally sucked. Then again she didn't really place herself out there for socialization, she was a wall flower and people for the most part ignored her.
She gave Carver another pat on the head when she felt him stir beneath her. "Good boy," she signed with her hands. The dog probably wouldn't know what she'd said, but it was the thought that counts, right?
done :3 open for anyone who can tolerate being around someone who can't hear what they say xD

Anti-social was essentially the definition of Shane's life... but it wasn't something he did intentionally. He had been so sheltered all his life that he had taken to secluding himself naturally. Yes, Shane was socially retarded... he couldn't function when there were a lot of people he didn't know hanging around, he couldn't handle stressful situations, and he was prone to mild panic attacks when he was dragged out of his little comfort zone bubble that he had created around himself. It really wasn't his fault though, I mean, what more could be expected in a mute person who had been bullied all their life?
Normally, he spent his time at home or at the barn, and nowhere else. Because of the amount of time he spent with his horse, he had become a superb rider. He'd taken a few lessons early on, but like most things he took lessons in, he would get frustrated because he couldn't talk to the person trying to teach him, and when he got frustrated he couldn't learn. So he gave up on lessons and just rode, adjusting things until the horse did them better. Yes, it was the hard way around, but it was easier for him to do it his own way. Besides, he and his horse seemed to have some sort of bond and the more they learned together the better they were.
On this particular day though, the 17 year old's parents had insisted that he go elsewhere in a poorly thought out attempt to get their son to meet people, and dropped him off in town, saying they'd be back later. Of course, he wasn't pleased with this, in the least... there was nothing in town that interested him, and he would have much rather just gone to the barn like he normally did and spent the day with Dublin. The Hanoverian was really the only friend Shane had, and because he was so shy and quiet, it wasn't likely to change any time soon.
Intimidated by the crowds of people that seemed to be everywhere he went, he made his way towards one of the few places he knew there wouldn't be that many people. Most "unpopular" people wished they could be popular, but not Shane. He was perfectly content with being among the rejects of society, so long as that meant people would leave him alone. So he spent any time not at the barn or at home in places where the popular people typically didn't hang out... like the library, or museums. There were usually fewer people there than in other places, and that was the environment he preferred.
He stepped into the museum of science, not really interested in the subject matter, more just interested in getting away from the public. Everything inside was so massive it was a little overwhelming since he hadn't ever been there before. He hadn't been there long, and wasn't really paying much attention to the people around him, when a group of high school kids, no doubt the summer school group, being lead by a teacher and tour guide came whisking by, causing him to step out of their way a little too hastily and very nearly walked right into one of the few benches in the museum and the occupant of said bench.
Had he been capable of speaking he would have uttered a quick apology for his clumsiness, but as we all know, he could do no such thing. So instead, he just took a step back so as to not be standing practically on top of the girl, and did all that he could to express what he couldn't say... meaning just an apologetic look. He had that horrible feeling that she was going to find his silence rude, not realizing he had no choice, like most people did... but it wans't like he could explain. After all, what could a mute person do to say they couldn't speak? [/size]
