You and me, they wanna break us - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LET'S SHAKE IT UP( 'cause they will never take us ) Caffeine.
The simple coffee bean, considered by many a drug, addictive, especially when it had the power to keep you going for a few more hours. Which is exactly why James Andreas probably drank so much of the stuff. Knowing full well how bad energy drinks could be for your heart...the guarana in those things was enough to give you a heart attack, if you drank so much, especially after exercising...he opted for the safer, yet more addictive alternative. He could honestly say, that without it, he’d end up crashing and burning under his heavy schedule and bizarre sleep patterns.
So, the smell of roasting coffee beans wafting over the counter at Vintage Brew was almost too much for the twenty two year old man to bear. He had been on night shift at the hospital the previous night, and hadn’t gotten much sleep, catching a few winks when he could, that was, when someone wasn’t paging him every five minutes. Interns. Used for all of the smaller and more unsavoury jobs that the more experienced doctors couldn’t be bothered doing, and even the nurses bossed them around. Not that he minded exactly, he had wanted to become a doctor, and he knew it was all part of the drill. One year of being run off his feet, and he’d start his residency, and it would be all worth it in the end.
Coffee, then the barn. Despite little sleep, he was still heading straight to Crossfire to ride all three of his mounts. Despite his goal of becoming a doctor, he was still headfirst in the eventing world, hoping that he would be able to juggle both without too many problems. He wasn’t going to give up his eventing goals for the world...unless that part of the world happened to be his sister...he’d had them since he was a kid, before the thought of becoming a doctor even crossed his mind.
Bouncing on the balls of his feet, he stuffed his hands in his pockets. “Hurry up,” he mumbled to nobody in particular, anxious to get going.

She had gotten home a mere two hours ago and here she was somewhat functioning, she groaned and rolled over covering her head with a pillow. No she had to get up, siting up she threw the covers back and walked to her bathroom hand running threw her blond hair, bare feet carrying her into her walk in closet as she put on a pair of breeches, a blue polo and a pair of tall socks and then her boots. She went into the bathroom and pulled her hair back, putting makeup on she brushed her teeth and headed downstairs and into the kitchen where she grabbed an apple, keys and clutch and headed out the door. She needed coffee and then over to the barn to ride her two English horses, she had ridden her two western horses yesterday. She yawned and focused on the road and not the fact of wanting to fall asleep. She knew all about falling asleep at the wheel, that had been one of the things she had to deal with last night, that and the dude who had a hatchet threw his skull.
How in the hell it had happened she never got a clear story by the smell on his breath and that of his friends they had been drinking she figured some drunk accident. She shook her head and heard her phone chime, she checked the text late shift be here at five. Coffee now it was all the more important, she tossed the phone onto the front seat and pulled into vintage brews. She parked her car and stepped out pulling her hoodie tighter around her and leaning in grabbing her phone and clutch. She shut and locked the door and walked in. Pushing her sunglasses into her hair, she went up to the counter and placed her order, turning around looking at her phone she ran straight into a guy.
She looked up at him im so sorry, then it clicked he was from the hospital too. Your James right she asked im Gabby once again im sorry I was just looking at that text again. She spoke and turned when they said her coffee was ready, she smiled and went to sit at a table. She took a sip and set down on the table and rested her head in her hand and on the wall, hopefully all would go good and she would make it back to her house in time to take a nap, shower, eat and then head over to the hospital. She sighed and looked over at James she always thought he was cute but never had the guts to actually talk to him and she decided he probably was taken but who knew. Sighing she sipped at her coffee and desperately waited to wake up a little bit more. Notes: ehhh not the best should get better.... outfit

You and me, they wanna break us - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LET'S SHAKE IT UP( 'cause they will never take us ) Mid bounce, the woman in front of him turned and ran straight into him, busy looking at her phone, causing him to have to stumble back a tiny bit, shifting his weight quickly so he wouldn’t go toppling over. Recovering from the unfortunately timed bump quickly, he recognised the blonde as another intern from Addison General, one he vaguely knew as Gabby, but with how busy the hospital could get, it was hard to get any real one on one time with a lot of the other interns, not to mention his even busier schedule outside the hospital usually meant he didn’t get to socialise too much with the other interns.
He gave her an easy grin. “Yeah, I’m James,” he replied, removing his hands from where they had been sitting in his jean pockets.
“It’s nice to officially meet you,” he said, coupled with a soft chuckle. He needed to make more friends around Addison, he always had Hannah to talk to, but he did need other friends besides his younger sister. And, since he spent most of his time at either the hospital or the barn, the majority of his friends were probably going to have to be from those two places...and by the looks of her clothing, she was at both. Bonus.
“Don’t sweat it, no damage done,” he answered, shrugging slightly. He himself was the same, he got distracted by things, like his phone, and ended up running into people...and inanimate objects. His coffee arrived shortly after Gabby collected hers, not a moment too soon, in his opinion, he was going to need it if he didn’t want to fall straight off, especially when he was riding Jess, out of his four horses, the gelding was probably the most likely to throw him across the ring just because he felt like it.
“Heading over to Crossfire when you’re done here?” he asked, deciding to try and make some sort of conversation, watching her lean her head against the wall as she sat, as he half hovered near the table she had sat herself at, thinking it would probably be a bit rude to just seat himself there as well without invitation.

She watched him as he came over and picked her head off the wall, motioning for him to sit down. Yes I am though I probably shouldn’t but I have to ride my English horses today and be quick but efficient so I can go back and nap before I have to be to the hospital for night shift or early morning however you want to look at.She spoke taking another sip of her coffee and looking at him, shaking her head and spinning her phone, thank goodness tomorrow is my day off I get to catch up on my sleep. She laughed, its not bad once the adrenalin kicks in but when it wears off it sucks. She smiled, it was such a violent cycle but it came with the job. At least if one of us falls off we don’t have to worry about calling 911. She laughed softly, it was good to have company she didn’t have many friends and Zach well she was not for sure what was going on with that so she was pretty much moving on with her life.
She stood and walked over to his side of the table, come on I need to have some fun and what better than some friendly competition on horseback, though I warn you I do hunter jumper so it probably wont be any fun for you. She smirked I guess I will meet you there. She put her sunglasses on and walked out of vintage brew and drove to the stables, she was greeted with whickers from her babies. Renegade paced and called out pissed about not being ridden Star could care less. She slipped the bridle over Renegades nose and lead him out. Putting his saddle pad on and then the saddle she was making quick work of this seeing it sometimes didn’t go well. She smirked and patted his neck when he was already to go, grabbing her helmet she went into the arena and set up a small course before mounting Renegade and working on his flat work first, then she took him over the jumps but only once she wanted him to be fresh and ready for their little competition.

You and me, they wanna break us - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LET'S SHAKE IT UP( 'cause they will never take us ) James seated himself opposite Gabby when she motioned for him to sit down, setting the takeaway cup of coffee he had ordered on the table in front of him. “I probably shouldn’t either, but I can’t stand the thought of leaving them a day without a visit, even if I don’t ride,” he said, flashing her a grin. He usually rotated the schedules for his horses, two one day, the other two the next, or just taking turns exercising each depending on when he had a break in his hospital schedule. Luckily the indoor arenas came complete with overhead lights, so he could use them even if the sun was already down. There was a limit on how late he would work them though, late evening was fine but he was pretty positive Carlee wouldn’t appreciate finding him in her arena at one in the morning, which was when some of his shifts finished.
He laughed. “I have day shift for the rest of the week, thankfully. I’ve been on night shift all week so they’re rotating me,” he said. His own day off was the next day, he probably could have waited to go to ride until then, but he was itching to get back in the saddle.
“At least if one of us falls off we don’t have to worry about calling 911,” Gabby said, and he grinned. “Always a bonus,” he answered, taking another mouthful of coffee. He couldn’t count the amount of times he’d ended up injured from riding, with nobody there to help. It was a dangerous sport, riding animals who very much had minds of their own, but that’s what made it so...exhilarating. Interesting.
She finished her coffee, standing, and stopping next to his chair to challenge him to a hunter jumper competition, before leaving the cafe. He only grinned at her, throwing “I’ll see you there,” after her as she walked off, chuckling slightly. It was definitely a job for Dex, the trained hunter jumper Belgian Warmblood stallion wasn’t exactly trained for what James usually competed in, but he had mainly bought him due to his personality, the potential he had shown despite his old owner not having the experience to help him reach his potential, and sometimes it was good to have something a little different to throw in to the mix.
Picking up his cup, he headed out and to his car. He had drained the rest of the contents by the time he had reached Crossfire, pulling his boots from the back seat and swapping the Converses he had been wearing for them before he got out. Dex was in his stall, thankfully, he discovered when he finally got in to the barn, the stallion could be difficult to catch on the best of days, and he really didn’t want to be chasing the horse around a paddock. Successfully tacking the horse without too many problems, he headed to the arena he had spotted Gabby in when he had arrived, letting himself in and mounting.

She smirked I was being to think you wouldn’t show up, nice horse. Renegade jerked his head up and pranced. She pulled back on the reins and made him settle, Renegade is a little excited. She laughed oh and you should be lucky you have the day shift for the rest of the week because I have the night shift the rest of the week and then the following week im off or as it currently stands. She crinkled her nose and then turned Renegade to the jump course and picked up a canter she angled him to the rail as he was not settled enough to jump yet and she really didn’t feel like falling or crashing through a jump. He snorted and tossed his head before settling somewhat. She pointed him for the first jump and felt him power his way over the jump, she shook her head as he only gained speed but never out of control, he cleared each jump with room to spar, however the last jump he hesitated and bunny hopped it. Kicking out when he landed on the other side, she sat it quite nice.
She stopped him and felt him tense, she hopped off and tied his reins so they wouldn’t fall, she ran the irons up and clipped the lounge line to him and went to the other side of the ring and made him go. He bucked and threw a huge fit, this is what happens when you don’t ride the beast for a day or two he becomes a pissed off mess. She spoke, watching Renegade closely after twenty minutes the stallion had worked himself into a sweat. Gabby knew he was not tired he was just merely going to listen now. She unclipped the lounge line and untied his reins and lowered her irons, mounting she walked him over to the rail and stopped him, should we make this competition more fun with a bet lets see if you win I will buy you coffee for a week and if I win what offer do you make? She smiled and patted Renegades neck, best out of three cant knock a pole down sound good?
She looked over at him and raised an eyebrow, the half Arabian under her pawed the ground and she trotted him over to the jump he had knocked over. Getting off one more time she set it back up and mounted once more, shifting in her saddle she adjusted it and then turned him around and headed back to the rail, you can go first this lady insist that you go first. She winked and sat back waiting for James to get his butt into gear.

You and me, they wanna break us - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LET'S SHAKE IT UP( 'cause they will never take us ) James laughed. “Of course I was going to show up, I’m not the type of person to run away from a challenge,” he answered, grinning at Gabby. He adjusted the reins, feeling Dex shift underneath him, wanting to get going already. It was funny, how the horse would stand and wait while he was in one of the arenas, or the show ring, but if he took him out on the trail, he’d bolt the first chance he got. Probably knew the difference between work and play.
“Thanks. He’s nice too,” he replied, nodding towards Renegade. He pointed Dex in one direction, asking him to circle the arena a few times, gradually increasing then decreasing the speed as he went to warm him up, glad to see the horse was relatively calm for not having been ridden in at least two days. The chestnut just seemed eager to work today, but James knew that could change as suddenly as a flick of a switch, he might decide that he didn’t like a particular jump or that he had had enough and start up with his antics.
Stopping once he had reached the point where he had started his laps, he watched Gabby lead Renegade over to him, listening to her proposal. “I’ve never really been good at making deals. So, I guess whatever I’ll owe you at the end of it can be entirely up to you,” he said, chuckling slightly. Dex snorted, stamping a hoof impatiently, so he applied a small amount of pressure to the reins, signalling him to keep quiet and still, it wasn’t time to go yet.
“Sounds good to me,” he agreed.
He laughed, nudging Dex forward into a walk. “Alright, we’ll show you how it’s done,” he said, tones joking. He circled the stallion, waiting for her to fix the jump she had knocked down earlier, before he finally pointed him towards the first jump, a moderately sized vertical, which they took easily. The rest of the course went pretty smoothly, though Dex tried to rush a few of the jumps, something he was used to while he was riding Vi and Jess, so he could slow him down to a more acceptable speed easily, the last thing he wanted was for the horse to trip over the jumps and hurt himself.
They finally reached the last jump, another vertical, and Dex sensed that it was almost over, excited to get over the jump, he stumbled slightly before takeoff, much to James’ angst, but managed to steady himself before he went all the way down. He clipped the top rail as he went over, they landed, and he glanced backwards for a second, watching it quiver for a few long moments before settling, not falling.
He slowed Dex, stopping him near Gabby and Renegade. “Your turn,” he said, grinning at her.

She shook her head, hmm you take me to a movie and dinner though im sure you will win seeing Renegade here likes to prove me wrong sometimes. She rolled her eyes as he said to watch how it was done, he was pretty damn good going around the course despite the stumble at the last jump he managed to clear the course. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to challenge him but the only way to figure out if Renegade was going to listen was to take him over the jumps. She trotted him around in a circle and then cued him for a canter before pointing him to the first jump. He instantly wanted to increase his speed but not out of control by any means and if she was to pull back on the reins he would throw a major fit and she would be greeting the dirt. The first jump they soared over and same with the others though the horse was getting reckless and so she gave him a friendly reminder to slow it down, he surprisingly listened and cleared the last jump without knocking anything down. She brought him around and he tossed his head and kicked out.
Though when something went crashing to the ground out in the aisle he flipped out and it wasn’t a buck, it was a full rear and then he was falling over backwards. She sensed this and tried to dismount but her foot was caught, he landed smack dab on her leg and she winced and cursed softly to herself, when he stood and went to bolt she kicked her foot free with her good leg and let him go. She laid back in the dirt and groaned. Fuck it hurts so damn bad, I think somethings broke. She spoke through clenched teeth. Gabby sat up taking her helmet off, the stallion ran pass and then skidded to a halt and just stopped wondering why she was still on the ground. He started to walk over but she smacked her hand on her thigh and he skittered away, he knew better then to be around her at this moment. He sulked in the corner and watched his owner, head lowered knowing he had just pulled something stupid.
She turned and glared at him, she just sat there, there was no way she was getting up by herself on one leg unless she wanted to cause more damage to the other which she didn’t. Gabby sighed and wanted to rake her hand through her hair but because it was pulled back she couldn’t and so she settled for a huff and grounding her teeth together for no reason besides it kept her from crying out in pain. Which she knew better then to do, she had a lot worse injuries then this but this by far was the worse full and the worse thing one of her horses had done. She quietly just sat there and waited for whatever came next.

You and me, they wanna break us - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LET'S SHAKE IT UP( 'cause they will never take us ) James laughed. “A movie and dinner it is,” he agreed to the deal, grinning at her. Either way, he wouldn’t mind who won, she was pretty, and even if she ended up buying him coffee for a week that would still mean he got to see her more. That was James, always a sucker for a pretty face, and her personality had caught his interest so far. She rode off, pointing Renegade towards the course James had just taken Dex over, and he watched, as always, studying the horse and rider’s form, critiquing silently to himself, as he normally did. He couldn’t help it, it was just an automatic response whilst watching another rider to him. He was impressed by what he saw, nonetheless.
They finished, looking like the round was going to end with no complications. No complications were always a good thing when you went for a ride...maybe he thought too soon about it. There was a massive clatter from behind, coming from the direction of the barn, and Renegade spooked at the sudden noise. He watched as he reared, feeling a little helpless as he knew there wasn’t anything he could do at that moment, hoping that she would be able to pull his head around to stop him. But she tried to dismount instead, and the horse went down, landing on top of her legs.
He dismounted Dex, hastily tethering the stallion to the fence so he wouldn’t end up racing around the arena with the other horse, whom he watched carefully as he jogged quickly over to the form of Gabby laying on the ground, groaning. “Okay, tell me where it hurts,” he said, dropping to his knees next to the fallen rider, adopting his ‘doctor’ attitude (not that he was one yet, but close enough), knowing full well that asking if she was okay was pretty pointless, when it was obvious that she wasn’t. He guessed, from the fall, that it was leg related, but he wasn’t sure if the horse had fallen on her so much to dislocate her pelvis or effect her spine in any way – the latter being the most dangerous.
