SO HOW COME WHEN I REACH OUT MY FINGERS, IT FEELS LIKE MORE THAN DISTANCE BETWEEN US He had gone to bed with his wife beside him and now as he woke up she was already gone. Well he didn't suspect she'd gone anywhere spectacular, maybe downstairs or to the bathroom. Dependant on the time. He glanced to his clock it was just coming up to 8am. She'd most likely be down stairs. Theo rolled over swinging his legs out of the bed, rubbing his tired eyes as he yawned. Anyone witnessing his wake may have likened it to that of The King Of Beasts rising from his slumber. Indeed he kind of did look like a Lion. He had the same untamed, frizzy hair, the size and the girth to represent that of a Lion's. He even maintained the status of one. Theodore the Lion-heart, he could hear it now. Although he would settle for Lord as it meant much less paperwork and well generally a lot less work. He raised his arms above his head, stretching them backwards and thrusting his deep chest forwards, yawning even more so. And with one last sight he lifted himself out of his bed and made his way towards the bathroom. It was probably time to get up and go.
Where to he had no idea. First stop was breakfast.
Finally finished getting ready he jogged down the large double stairs into the hallway and then proceeded into the kitchen. Well his house was large here, what else would you expect? But it was nowhere near the size of the Uppingham's stately manor back in Loughborough. And the land it had was probably not even near a quarter of the Loughborough manor's vegetable patch. But it felt good to downsize once in a while. It made it feel a lot more homely. If the Uppingham clan could ever feel homely of course. He entered the kitchen, where all the hustle and bustle seemed to be. It was now nearing half past 8 and he could hear Edward rifling about in his bag crouched down on the floor as he did so. He'd obviously forgotten something. "What have you lost?" Theodore asked his son exasperatedly, looking over to the book which was placed on top of the side of the kitchen counter. Probably the missing textbook that he was after. Theo reached over and took it in his hand, flicking through the pages as he did so. "Biology, how boring. I'm not sure why you were so desperate to find it." He handed it over to his son, as Edward looked up in disbelief that his father had found it so quickly. His son muttered a thanks and then looked around for his mother (as Theo expected) and then quickly hurried out of the kitchen. Theodore made his way over to the kettle and filled it up, placing it back on it's stand as he boiled the water for his morning brew.
He took another quick glance at his watch and he noted it was now nearly twenty five minutes to nine and his children still hadn't left for school. Well he didn't even know if Veronica was awake yet. "If you don't shift yourselves you will be late for school. You wouldn't do this at Stowe and you certainly won't be late here either." He called in an embittered tone, directing his words to his offspring. Edward quickly hurried into the kitchen and grabbed his coat off the chair, along with his scarf and his bag. He quickly excused himself and hurled out of the back door, supposedly into the garage to start his car. Within minutes the familiar whirr of his car and his son was gone. He poured his tea into his mug and stirred to his taste, pouring his milk as he waited for Veronica to come crashing downstairs. He spooned out the tea bag and dropped it into the bin. '1...2...3' He muttered under his breath before he heard footsteps making their way down the stairs. "OMG why did no one wake me?" Veronica screamed as she stormed into the kitchen. She swung her handbag onto her shoulder, which doubled as her school bag, well it was more of a handbag than a school bag. Theo was surprised she could even fit a book in there. Not that she did. Without a word of a goodbye (he expected Edward had at least kissed his mother goodbye when he had disappeared from the kitchen) she was out of the door and into the garage, starting up her own car and driving off to school, in a much more hurried fashion than her brother. It made him wonder why they didn't just share lifts. They went to the same school and seemed to have the same social status. Veronica was probably much too uptight to have to share a lift with somebody. Although he would have thought she would have liked the idea of being chauffeured around by Edward.
Deciding he wasn't just going to stand in the kitchen all day he made his way around to the living room, cup of tea still in his hand. He'd dressed smartly as usual, a brick type red colour with a silver/grey tie along with a pair of trousers, his rolex watch and his phone. Which was currently stuffed in his pocket. He rounded the corner of the room, speaking before he made an entrance. "Elizabeth. Are you there?" He questioned with a tiresome tone. He was weary, still plagued with jet lag and had not yet recovered. He was almost sent flying as a brindle whippet shot past his legs and into the living room, he scowled as he balanced himself, trying hard not to spill any tea. And with experienced success he managed it. Now where the fuck was his wife?

( And do you ever want me? Do you ever need me? ) Elizabeth woke at the usual time that morning, habit making her wake at around seven, on a weekday. She had adjusted to the time change better than Theodore had, he was still sound asleep beside her, she could feel his massive form next to her without having to even turn to see if he was there. She slid out of bed, silent as always, so she wouldn’t disturb him, making her way to their bathroom to shower. Fifteen minutes later and she was finished, knowing full well that if she didn’t start waking up Eddie and Veronica now, they would never get up in time to get to school before it started. Theodore was still asleep, probably a blessing really, at least until he finally woke up.
Her first stop was Edward’s room, he was easier to wake up, not making much of a fuss when she gently shook him awake, but the same couldn’t be said for Veronica. She couldn’t even get into her room, the door was locked, and when she knocked loudly and called through the door to tell her it was time to get up, there was no answer. Typical, really, for a school morning. She gave up after a few minutes, heading downstairs for breakfast, not worried about whether Eddie would get up or not, she knew he would be down shortly. A glass of water and an apple constituted as breakfast, as she passed through the kitchen, not particularly hungry, but feeling as though she should eat something.
She found refuge in the living room, hearing the sounds of life echoing down from upstairs, footsteps she knew that were Eddie’s hurrying down the stairs, and she grabbed the morning newspaper from the low wooden coffee table, taking a seat in one of the armchairs occupying the floor. It would only be a short while before she knew Theo would be up, and Veronica too, so she was going to make as much of the time of peace that she had as she could. Reading through the articles slowly, she was only on the third page when she heard Theo’s heavier footsteps jogging down the stairs. She hadn’t heard Veronica’s yet, but she knew she would get up with a few minutes to spare before she had to leave.
Eddie darted in not long afterwards to kiss her goodbye, and by his hurried pace and the fact he hadn’t really paused to chat to her, she suspected his father had said something to him about the time. And then, there was Veronica shouting down the stairs, and Lizzy let out an exasperated sigh. She had tried to wake her up; it wasn’t her fault the girl wouldn’t listen. The footsteps stopped, cars left, and there was a moment of brief silence...
"Elizabeth. Are you there?"
She had known it was too good to be true. “Yes, I’m here,” she answered, watching one of the dogs race in, coming to a stop at her feet, where it flopped onto the ground, belly side up, to which she obligingly rubbed with one foot, flicking to the next page of the newspaper.

SO WHAT IF YOU CAN SEE, THE DARKEST SIDE OF ME? NO ONE WILL EVER CHANGE THIS ANIMAL I HAVE BECOME help me believe, it's not the real me; somebody help me tame this animal! • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Surprisingly this morning, Theo wasn't feeling like the bastard he usually was. Instead he felt a lot more subdued, well still grumpy but perhaps not so prone to being a complete arse like usual. This was probably because he had actually gotten a decent nights sleep, one of the first, since he'd moved here. Several other nights he'd been tossing and turning in his sleep and would wake up at ungodly hours in the morning. This morning he had had a lay in though, he was normally risen before the sun. At around 5:30am every day. But since being here that had only happened a couple of times. He hated the sun beating him up, he didn't want it to catch him sleeping. He always felt as if he wasted hours of the day just by being in bed. It wasn't like he even went to bed late. Theo lived by the motto of earl to bed and early to rise. He had tried countless times to in still it into his kids, Edward had finally gotten half the message. Although he wasn't always up early he was getting better. Veronica on the other hand was only ever up early if it involved something that would benefit her. School was not on that list of benefits.
He yawned as he entered the living room, pausing briefly in the archway to look at his wife. There was no doubting that she looked as radiant as ever, she was the complete opposite to himself. Petite with a slim frame and fragile looking features. Where as he was tall and well built with a sense of power without even having to note his hieratic status. This would probably be the time that some other husbands would offer a compliment or some form of greeting. But not Theodore. Instead he made his way to his usual spot, a incredibly comfy looking armchair, and eased himself down into the fabric chair. He eased mainly because he didn't want to spill his tea and partly because his back was sore. He could have sworn Elizabeth had kneed him in the back at night. It wouldn't surprise him. She didn't exactly show affection for him. Then again he didn't show affection to his wife either. He took another sip of his tea and set it down on the small table beside the chair. He then picked up a tattered book on the table and flicked through to find his last page, indicated by the indention made in the page corner. He started reading, without saying anything more to his wife, he'd always been a fan of 'The Great Gatsby' and had read it countless times. Which was why the book was falling to pieces.
After a while he decided to speak, although he was deeply submerged in his book, he figured he knew the words off by heart enough to be able to talk without actually reading the page, just simply by skimming through. He could never do two things at once. "Got anything planned for today? I was thinking maybe we could do something together?" He asked, his voice lowering as he suggested that they actually spend time with each other. The couple hadn't done that in a while and he wasn't even sure what they may do. If he were a younger, more fitter man the suggestion would probably hint at sex, but he was simply not up for that amount of strenuous exercise so early in the morning. And his 'get up and go' had got up and went quite a while ago. It only arrived on special occasions or when he was feeling like it. Whether Elizabeth was or not, she never denied his sexual advances. Which possibly made his question seem like that's what he was after, but after years of living with him in his constant foul mood his wife should be aware that the times of having morning sex were long gone.
He wasn't even ready to be shot down by her, in fact he was ready for her to gasp in utter shock that he wanted to spend time with her. Actually it wasn't that he wanted to he just felt like he should. They hadn't actually had alone time together in a while and he figured he should make the most of it. Show her what kind of husband he could be.
Before she went slagging him off to the town locals.

( And do you ever want me? Do you ever need me? ) Well, there hadn’t been any major explosions yet. Normally by this time, there would have been at least one, more so since they had made the move from England to America, since Theo hadn’t seemed to have managed to adjust his sleeping patterns to the time change properly yet. He was always in a bad mood when he was wide awake, and being tired just made it worse. Elizabeth had been half expecting something this morning, but she wasn’t going to question why she didn’t hear him hollering down the halls for some reason or another, no, she was going to keep quiet and hope it would last for the rest of the day.
Her blue eyes flickered upwards for a few brief moments, upon hearing him walk through the door. To anyone else perhaps, and herself, years ago, Theodore was an impressive sight, with his height, and looks. But after eighteen years of marriage, and being under the constant rule of his increasingly foul temper, that view on him had long since gone, left instead with a sort of wariness of the man, never knowing what was going to make him snap next. Not that he had ever really been violent, but he did have a habit of saying hurtful things without thinking about what it would do beforehand. She had long since given up on showing any sort of affection either, unless he asked for it (an extremely rare occurrence), and she wasn’t even sure if he was capable of much affection himself anymore.
He didn’t say anything to her, not that she was expecting him too, instead, taking a seat on another armchair, and picking up his copy of The Great Gatsby that was always floating around the house. The silence between them wasn’t awkward exactly, but neither was it comfortable. It sat in the middle, tense, maybe in their younger days, early on in their marriage, or some time before that, conversation would arise, but not now. It only seemed to come when they needed to discuss the children or something else on the same tangent. Gone were the days of conversation for the pure reason of being able to talk to each other. Instead, the only sounds were the grandfather clock against one wall, the sound of pages turning, and the dog panting beneath Lizzy’s feet, the small, incessant noises doing nothing to ease the tension.
"Got anything planned for today? I was thinking maybe we could do something together?"
They were probably the last words she expected to hear from the man sitting across from her. She looked up from the paper again, a flicker of surprise flashing across her face before it was replaced with calm acceptance. If that was what he decided he wanted to do, then fine. She was stretched as far as she could go, without adding fuel to the fire and refusing to do anything with him. She didn’t even say no on the few occasions he wanted sex. It felt good, for however long it lasted, to feel needed, or wanted, at least for a while, and even though she didn’t feel any better after it, sort of, with an empty, used feeling instead.
“I didn’t have anything particular in mind. What were you thinking?” she asked, watching him carefully.
