Her broken down racehorse is really the only thing she has, and she'd die before giving up on him.

life history » Jacq never knew her parents as she was abandoned shortly after being born. All that anyone knew about her was that the name she had been given was Jacquelyn Noelle Daniels. They never found her parents after she was abandoned. She went through the system of unwanted children, one foster home to the next until she was placed in a more permanent foster home. He was really unkind and didn't treat her or any of the other kids well at all. When she was 15 he tried to take advantage of her sexually so she ran away and never went back. That was when she got in with the wrong crowd. She started stealing cars for the guys at the chop shop to make a little money, and before long was making a "career" out of it until she got caught two years later and spent the next three years in jail.
When she got out, she was naturally bitter and hardened, and wanted nothing to do with anyone. She was at a racetrack watching a few cheap claiming races, trying to make a little money on the bets when one three year old who was losing by nearly 14 lengths and was being beaten around the track took a bad step and went down, breaking his right front leg. For some reason it really hit her seeing that, and as they loaded him up onto the equine ambulance, she followed them. It was taken to the animal hospital where they would decide. She overheard the vet telling the owner that there was an "experimental surgery" they could try to fix the leg, but the owner would have to pay $5,000 to cover a few basic costs. Clearly they had no interest in trying to save the horse, and told the vet to just put him down. When they came out into the waiting room, she didn't know why or what overcame her, but she walked right up to the owner and practically begged him to let her buy the horse from him. His response was "he's yours for $5." of course expecting that the horse would only be put down and he might as well humor this little girl. She gave him the $5 and ran back to stop the vet from putting him down. She said she didn't have the money now but she'd get it and she'd pay for the surgery. Sympathetic, the vet agreed to let her make payments and the surgery was gone through with.
The horse spent a lot of time at the vet afterwards to recover and after months of rehab the vet said he could go home, but she should know that he would probably never be sound again and would most definitely never race again, but she was downright determined to prove him wrong. Why she was suddenly so into this was beyond her, since she'd never been into horses at all before, but for some reason that big black colt who had never placed better than last in all 5 of his races had found his way into her heart and she was going to fix him if it was the last thing she did. She got a job bar tending, and was barely making enough money to make payments for the surgery and his board at the stable, so there was not a penny spent on herself... housing included. The black horse, conveniently enough for her, named Vindicated, was all that mattered to her, and if paying for his vet bill and board meant she didn't get a roof over her head, then so be it.
