Walking through the dark, a great many things were running through Libby's mind, none of them paid any regard to the fact that she was a 17 year old girl walking alone in the middle of the night. Anyone who knew Libby could attest to her not being the most sensical person in the whole world. Tonight, though, she actually had an excuse for not thinking to clearly. It was funny, really, how everything could change in a heartbeat, how just a few words could flip your entire world upside down. Libby had never thought that it would happen to her... at least not like this anyway.
The day had started out like any old day. She'd gone to school, watched James' rugby practice, then went to the barn and rode her horses. Hooligan had even behaved himself, and hadn't bucked her off... not that he hadn't bucked, he just hadn't managed to actually get her off. Conniption had given a good go at dumping her as well, but about the time Beth threatened to get on him, he decided he'd rather go over the scary swedish oxer than have Beth make him go over it and then some. After she'd gotten done with the barn, she had met Melissa at the coffee shop to work on their English assignment, which, considering the both of them working on one project, was really not going so well. So, by the time she arrived at home it was nearly 10:00 and had already started to get dark out.
Upon her arrival at home, she could hear her parents arguing before she even got inside. She just rolled her eyes and ignored it, they'd been arguing a lot lately. When she got inside, though, what she heard changed everything. "Libby was never supposed to find out." She heard her dad say, piquing her interest. She started towards the kitchen where they were, and heard her mom say "well she's going to start asking questions when she realizes how much they look alike." Confused as to what they were going on about, she stepped into the kitchen. "What was I not supposed to know?" She asked, watching as her parents expressions fell when they realized that she had overheard them.
What followed was a long drawn out explanation of how she was not actually her father's daughter, and that Meli was her half sister. Head spinning from all this new information. Libby managed to choke out an inquiry as to whether or not that was the reason they had nearly divorced. Her mom tried to beat around the bush and not answer her directly, but her dad... or not dad... butted in and said, straight up, that she was.
For a moment, she just stood there and said nothing while her mom scrambled to make it better. After a minute or two had gone by, she turned and walked back out. Everything made sense now. He had never come to any of her horse shows after he'd come back. He had never come to parent-teacher conferences, school plays, "bring your dad to school" day, or even to her birthday parties. He hated her. He blamed her for the problems with his marriage. The door slammed behind her as she hurried back down the driveway into the cover of darkness.
By the time she reached her destination, she didn't even realize that it was nearly midnight, but even if she had, she wouldn't have cared. She always went to one person with her problems, and he never complained. Considering that he had relatively recently become her "official" boyfriend, it seemed only natural to run to him when something went wrong.. She rang the doorbell, and stepped back a bit, anxiously waiting for him to come to the door. Normally, she would just go in, but considering the hour, she was sure that James's dad would show up with a cricket bat thinking she was an intruder if she did just walk in. Granted, she had forgotten to take into account the fact that she had probably just woken everyone up, but right now, she just needed her best friend, and everything else was cast aside as an afterthought.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #4c7b8f solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]James paused the movie he was watching, the volume on the television low so that it wouldn’t carry through the house to the other bedrooms, since everyone had gone to bed already besides himself (although if all of them were actually asleep right now, he had no idea) although their house was large enough that the chances of anyone else hearing the noise from their room was slim. Getting off his bed where he had been laying while watching it, he padded barefoot downstairs to the kitchen, moving through the dark house easily without needing to turn any lights on along the way, knowing his way around well enough by now to not need them.
Once he had reached the kitchen he got himself a glass of water, leaning his large frame heavily against the kitchen counter. He was still a little sore from rugby practice, coach had run them hard today, and then he’d had to go to work after school, so it wasn’t like he’d had all that much time to relax after it. Even if he hadn’t had work, he probably would have gone to the barn with Libby anyway to watch her lesson, and to catch Hooligan if need be, but at least he could have sat down during that. He was in really good shape, but there was only so much of a beating one’s body could take… at least it wasn’t as sore as he could get after a lot of games. Although the pain that came with it didn’t make him want to quit, he loved playing too much for that. It was just a sort of ache in the muscles that usually went away overnight, so it wasn’t that bad.
Draining the rest of his glass of water, he put the now empty glass into the dishwasher, turning to make his way back to his bedroom when the sound of the doorbell rang through the house, making him freeze in his tracks, glancing quickly at a clock on the wall to see what time it was… who would be showing up at their doorstep at midnight? Slowly turning back, he walked out of the kitchen and through the spacious house to the entrance hall, silently approaching the door, thankful for the fact that his dad had had an electronic peephole installed – something he probably wouldn’t have bothered with before but he decided that it made him feel more comfortable when his wife and daughters had to answer the door to anyone when he and James weren’t home to do it.
Hitting the button that lit up the display, he almost thought he was seeing things when he saw Libby on the other side of the door, quickly moving to unlock the heavy wooden door, swinging it wide open, able to see more of her now than the camera was able to show him before… like the expression on her face, something was clearly wrong, even if it wasn’t midnight when she’d showed up on his doorstep, he would have been able to tell that. He’d known her for so long, enough that he liked to think that he knew her better than anyone else did, and right now she looked that upset that it was almost causing him pain just seeing it.
“Libby? What’s wrong?” he asked, automatically stepping forward and wrapping his arms around his girlfriend, pulling her closer into him into an almost bear hug, mentally telling himself to calm down, stopping himself from asking if she’d walked all the way here, because if he asked and she said she had it probably wouldn’t help the almost heart attack she’d just given him. Not to mention that right now it was probably the worst time to ask, since she wouldn’t have walked all the way here without calling him to pick her up if it wasn’t something big.

Waiting on that doorstep in the cool night air seemed to take an eternity. She wasn't even sure if anyone would actually get up, but she certainly hoped someone would. No doubt the door was locked, and attempting to climb into James' window was probably not a good idea, considering her athletic ability was about as prominent as that of a sea turtle. In her haste to leave home, she had conveniently left her cell phone on the counter in the kitchen, though it might have been done deliberately subconsciously, so that her parents couldn't contact her. This, of course, meant she couldn't call or text him if he hadn't heard the doorbell. It didn't occur to her that if he wasn't going to hear the doorbell, he probably wouldn't hear his phone ringing, but in her slightly desperate state of mind, she wasn't thinking too clearly.
When he finally opened the door, she immediately felt better. She knew James loved her, and just seeing him was more than enough consolation. As usual, he was instantly able to tell that something was wrong, if not for the late hour that she had come calling, then for the look on her face, and wrapped her in his arms while asking what was wrong. She pressed up against his chest, feeling like she was loved and like she belonged there, the complete opposite feeling of what she'd felt in her own home just a short time ago. She took a deep breath as she put her arms around his waist, holding onto him almost desperately. That was what she loved so much about James. Whenever things were wrong, it was always right when she was with him. She was fairly certain that the country could be taken over by terrorists and she would still live in blissful happiness as long as she was with her.
"He hates me." She said quietly, pressing her face into his chest. She had vented to him many times in the past about how her dad seemed to focus all of his attention on her other siblings and none on her, and often raised the question as to whether or not it would kill him to care even just a little, so no doubt it wouldn't be too hard for James to figure out who she meant by "he." In the past she'd always just vented at school or the next time she saw him, so it was quite unusual for her to show up on his door step in the middle of the night on the verge of tears declaring that he hated her. "I'm not even his daughter so he hates me." She said, very matter-of-factly, more for her own sake so she wouldn't break down and cry. How could they have waited all these years to tell her... and they didn't even plan to ever tell her. She felt like her whole world was falling to pieces, except for the little piece of ground that she stood on when she was with James. With him, nothing would ever fall apart.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #4c7b8f solid 10px; width: 399px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]when the time comes baby don't run, just kiss me slowly After a few moments of just standing there holding her, he carefully drew her further into the house, reaching out one hand temporarily to shut and lock the door again before quickly replacing it back around her. A noise at the staircase caught his attention, catching sight of his father standing at the top of the stairs peering down at them, obviously having heard the doorbell ringing and had come down to make sure that everything was alright, looking at the pair of them down there before turning and walking back in to the darker upper level of the house, probably guessing that it was something that James was fine to handle on his own. Luckily he knew that they wouldn’t be annoyed by the late night intrusion, they had known Libby just about as long as he had and they pretty much welcomed her over here whenever she wanted.
He looked down at her again when he heard her finally speaking, knowing that she was talking about her dad when she said ‘he’ hated her, not asking anything more about it, figuring that she would elaborate on it in her own time, but figuring it must have been pretty bad if she had come all the way here to talk to him about it rather than waiting until next time she saw him to say anything about it, like she normally did.
But he really wasn’t expecting what she said next, pulling back a tiny bit to look down at her after she had said it, clearly a bit confused himself. She wasn’t his daughter? What was she talking about? He figured that there was probably a lot more to this story than she had told him so far, but since it was pretty big he didn’t want to push her into telling him all of it. “Come on, let’s go upstairs and talk about it… or not, if you don’t want to. You can stay the night if you want, or I can take you home later. Whatever you want to do,” he said, reaching down to kiss her on the forehead gently, unable to do anything but feel a little bit helpless over this situation, not really sure what else he could do to help besides what he had just offered, and to try and make her feel better. Although he wasn’t sure how easy that last one was going to be, even if he could manage to do so most other times.

Libby really had absolutely no idea how lucky she was to have James. Considering how he was her first boyfriend, she was completely unaware that most boyfriends weren't as understanding and caring as James was. Sure, most cared, but most of them would probably have long since become annoyed with her crazy antics and given up on her. James, though, was always there when she needed him to be, whether she'd expressed her need for him or not. There were very few guys out there who would be willing to chase her crazy horse around the property after bucking her off, sit and listen to her babble on about things that made no sense, and always be willing to drop everything for her at a moment's notice.
She just nodded when he said they could go upstairs to talk about it. She really didn't want to go home tonight, and right now, she felt like she didn't want to go home ever. If she could just stay with James for the rest of her life she would be so exceptionally content, none of her recently discovered family drama would even matter anymore. She trailed along beside him as they moved up the stairs, letting the warmth of his body comfort her. She had never felt more at ease than when she was with James, and that, to her, meant everything. When they got upstairs and settled onto his bed, she leaned against him without saying anything for a moment or two. "He said it was my fault." she said with a slight sniffle, "When they almost got divorced. He blames me because he found out he wasn't my dad."
She really did feel better already, just for having told him and said it out loud. She wasn't sure what she expected him to say, it wasn't like there was really anything he could do about it, but she just needed to tell someone, and there was no one she would rather tell than him. "I wasn't supposed to find out, but I overheard them talking." She added after a moment. Libby really didn't understand why they'd kept it a secret from her for so long. Why couldn't they have just told her that he wasn't her father? She still would have been upset, but the fact that they'd just never told her and let the hatred he had for her fester without ever giving her a reason for it felt a little like betrayal. It just wasn't fair to her, especially since he so obviously thought it was her fault, despite the fact that she'd had no say in who her father was going to be.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #4c7b8f solid 10px; width: 399px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]when the time comes baby don't run, just kiss me slowly Maybe a lot of boyfriends wouldn’t have been so understanding when their girlfriend came knocking unannounced at their door at this time of night… neither would most of their families… but they had known Libby since they had basically moved over to Addison so she was practically family already, especially since they were nearly inseparable when they both didn’t have their own separate things to be doing. He even went to her riding lessons, when he could, and he was fairly sure he spent half his time at the barn either holding her horses for her, or running around doing things for her… or running around chasing after Hooligan for her when he dumped her mid ride. But honestly, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
He wrapped an arm around her waist as they headed upstairs to his bedroom, not really wanting to let her go right now… because obviously she was upset and he was still a little worried over the fact that she had walked all of the way here by herself. Once they were in his room he settled himself on the bed, reaching over to grab the remote to turn the television off now, now that she was here and talking to him, settling back on his bed and wrapping both arms around her again this time when she leant against him.
He was honestly a little speechless, at first, when she spoke… who on earth told someone that they had raised as a child for their whole life that something like that was their fault? It was hardly Libby’s fault, since it wasn’t like she had a choice in what her mother had done before she was born. He just didn’t understand it, not in the slightest. He could understand why her dad was upset about it to begin with… obviously finding out your wife cheated on you and had gotten pregnant would hardly sit well with anyone but obviously he was putting his resentment about that in entirely the wrong place.
Reaching a hand up, he brushed a strand of loose hair out of her face, tucking it safely behind her ear. “It’s not your fault hon… it’s nowhere near your fault. He shouldn’t be blaming you for it… and I doubt he hates you… he probably just can’t get over what happened. But none of it is your fault,” he said after a moment, watching her as he spoke.
“Do you want something to sleep in, if you’re staying here the night?” he asked.

Going to James whenever she had a problem was a very natural thing for Libby to do. He was the complete opposite of her and always seemed to know just the right thing to say. James was very level headed and always seemed to be able to see things much more clearly than she. Libby tended to sort of fly by the seat of her pants, just going with whatever emotion first hit her. That was why she'd taken off in the middle of the night to go find him... because she'd been so overwhelmed by everything they told her that she just had to go and get out of there. She needed him to balance her out... to stabilize her emotions and tell her what she needed to hear, and mean every word of it.
Sitting there with him was the most comforting feeling. James' parents made her feel welcome in their home more than her own dad did in her's. She hadn't really thought about it before, probably because she'd gotten so used to his sort of cold attitude towards her, but now she was definitely feeling it. His parents had been nothing less than kind to her since the day that they first met. They'd never had any objections to her staying late or occasionally all night, and they hadn't complained when she'd kept him out later than she should have. Her house was the place that she lived, but James' house felt much more like home. That was probably why she loved him so much. Everything with him just felt right, like she belonged there with him. When he was gone she missed him like crazy... she was in contact with him pretty much 24/7 when they were apart, and she regularly felt like she was going to die of loneliness when he wasn't around.
"I know..." she said, looking up at him, "I just wish he could have just kept his feelings to himself." Maybe part of the fault was hers for asking if she was the reason that they'd nearly divorced, but at least her mother had tried to lie... it was her dad who had blurted out a yes like he didn't even care how that would make her feel. It just wasn't fair. It wasn't like she'd been able to choose who her parents were or what her mother did in her spare time when her dad was gone on business. When James asked if she wanted something to sleep in, she nodded, brushing away the wet streak down her cheek, before she remembered her manners, "If you don't mind me staying." she said, pushing herself off of him a little so she could look up at him without putting a kink in her neck. She was fairly certain he didn't mind, he wouldn't have offered her something to wear if he did, but he was always so polite, and she felt like she needed to at least try to live up to his standard... which was difficult, considering he was perfect and all.

This was definitely something he wanted to help her through, especially considering how big it was… even he was having a bit of a hard time trying to wrap his head around it all so he could only imagine that it would be so much worse for Libby. She definitely seemed a lot calmer than she had been when she had when she had first arrived at his house, which was good.
“Yeah, he should have,” he agreed, when she said that she wished her dad would have just kept it to himself… or at least his feelings about it, because really it wasn’t Libby’s fault what had happened so why he would even think of it was just beyond him… reaching up to gently brush some hair out of her face. “But I love you, and your mother loves you, and I’m sure he’ll realise that he’s been wrong about the whole thing and will calm down about it,” he added, leaning his head down a little to kiss her on the forehead.
“Of course I don’t mind if you stay. And you know mum and dad won’t mind either,” James answered, reaching one hand across to carefully wipe away the few bits of tears she missed after she had done it, getting up when she had moved away enough so that he could go and find her something to wear, walking over to his drawers and finding a clean shirt and a pair of his boxers for her to wear, figuring that they were better than nothing and better than going and waking his sister up to see if she had anything that she could borrow, bringing them back over to her when he had finished finding them.

These days, Libby had absolutely no idea how she had survived this long without James in her life. She couldn't really even remember what she did before she had James around. Sure she had her horses, but there were only so many hours in a day that a horse could take up, and now, James was the one who filled those hours. She got incredibly bored when she was by herself and James was just... well he was exactly what she needed. He was the one who kept her feet on the ground, even while she was on cloud nine. Without James there was no telling what crazy thing she would have done... or what country Hooligan would be in by now after dumping her and heading for the hills. He was everything that she needed.
Just being there with James made her feel so much better. Just hearing his voice was really all that she needed. Him saying that he loved her made the hurt of her dad... or who she thought was her dad... hating her so much less already. Whatever hole had been carved out of her heart just a short while earlier was already being filled by James. Everything about him was perfect. He made her feel like everyone in the world could hate her but she would still be ok as long as she had him. It might seem cheesy but she sometimes even felt like she could be freezing to death and one touch from him would keep her warm enough to survive. She wasn't really sure when she'd become such a sap, but James just made her feel all melty inside... in a good way.
She couldn't help but smile when he said that he and his "mum" and dad wouldn't mind her staying. She loved the way he spoke. It made her feel all giddy and bubbly inside. When he came back and handed the clothes to her, she took them then wrapped her arms around his torso. "Thank you." She said quietly with a sniffle, "Sorry I'm such a mess." she added realizing that she probably looked awful, still in her barn clothes and she probably looked every bit like she'd been crying. "I love you." She said then pulled back just slightly and stood on her tip toes and kissed him adoringly before letting him go. She took a step away and proceded to remove her shirt and pants, replacing them with the shirt and boxers he'd brought her for sleeping in. She had no qualms about changing in front of him. As far as she was concerned, under garments were no different from a bikini and he'd seen her in one plenty of times... not to mention the number of times she'd had to change from her jog clothes to her dressage clothes to her cross-country clothes with him or Nate or Beth or any of the other people in their group. Most of them were more modest, but Libby really didn't care. She was the wild one who was more likely to suggest that they all go skinny dipping after a long horse show day than go back to the hotel for a relaxing evening. So far no one had complained, so she just figured they didn't mind, and she was especially sure that James definitely didn't mind. That was just another reason she loved him, because he hadn't ever asked her to change anything about her. He just loved her the way she was, and that was exactly what she needed.

There would probably be very little she ever needed to apologise to him about, and this was definitely one of those things that she didn’t need to say sorry for. It wasn’t her fault that it had happened, and he hardly blamed her for being upset about it, and it was probably better that she had come to him about it so he could help her calm down.
“I love you too,” he said again, after she said it to him, kissing her back gently, keeping his arms wrapped around her while he did so, not really wanting to let her go as she started pulling back but he did anyway, but then again, he had that feeling every single time they kissed, or even just hugged, and he didn’t think that feeling would ever go away either. He’d loved her for a long time now, even if they had only started dating in their senior year, but he didn’t think he would have wanted to do it any differently, it had given them time to mature and get to know each other without complicating it any further, and it seemed to have been the best way to go about it.
As she got changed, he went and cleared his bed off properly so that they could sleep in it, turning on the lamp on his bedside table and turning the overhead lights off before heading back to his bed and getting in, waiting for her to finish getting ready for bed, barely even registering the fact that she had just basically taken off most of her clothes in front of him, it wasn’t like he hadn’t seen it before when he’d gone to shows with her, or if they had been swimming – not to say that he didn’t notice either, but that wasn’t something that was in the forefront of his mind like the majority of guys his age. “Do you think you should at least let your mum know you’re here, so she knows that you’re okay?” he suggested. Although, then again, her mum had probably already guessed that the first place Libby would have headed was to James’ house. - - - - - - - - - - well, i'm not sure what this is gonna be, but with my eyes closed all i see is the skyline, through the window, the moon above you and the streets below, hold my breath as you're moving in, taste your lips and feel your skin, when the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly |

After changing out of her clothes and into James' clothing, Libby made her way back over to the bed and slid into it beside him. She settled in to that spot right against him where she fit so perfectly, resting her head on his chest. She always felt like they were two pieces of a puzzle that were made specifically for each other. Even just the curvature of their bodies seemed to mesh perfectly, and she was quite certain that it meant they were intended to be together. The signs all pointed to her and James being together forever, and maybe it was silly to think like that while she was still in high school and with her first boyfriend and all that, but she didn't care. James was perfect and he was perfect for her.
Libby just shook her head when he asked if she thought she should tell her parents that she was there with him. They didn't deserve it. Maybe her mom did a tiny bit but keeping information like that away from her daughter for all these years was almost as bad as what her dad had said. He didn't deserve it at all. He wasn't even her dad, he didn't deserve anything from her. "I don't want to talk to them." She said simply, pressing herself closer to James. "If they're so worried they should have thought about what would happen when I found out they had been lying to me all this time." Libby had never really felt hurt by someone before, not like this anyway, and her way of dealing with it was to just pretend her parents didn't exist right now. As far as she was concerned, they deserved whatever suffering they got out of this.
"I just want to stay here with you and forget any of this even happened." She added after a moment. For the time being all she wanted was to be with him in their perfect little piece of solid ground and not let anything or anyone else in. It was better here than it was anywhere else and she wasn't going to let what her parents did ruin this. When she was with him she didn't want them to exist, at least not in her mind anyway. James was her utopia where nothing bad ever happened and everything bad that had happened was made right again. Nothing was going to change that.

He looked down at the top of her head when she shook it in answer to his question, he had figured that she would probably not want to call her parents or anything. He guessed it wasn’t so bad though, he figured her mother would at least figure that she would either go straight here, or to the barn, or both, after she had run out. Or maybe he just knew that they were the first two places she would go because he knew her so well. And if worse came to worst, he knew that she would probably call the house to see if she was there before she went into full blown panic mode.
“Alright, you don’t have to call them if you don’t want to,” he said. Maybe she would end up changing her mind in the morning and at least call them then and let them know, but he wasn’t going to talk her into it now if she was really that against the idea. And he really didn’t blame her for it, not after everything she had told him that was said. He guessed if he was in the same position he would probably feel exactly the same way.
He turned his head towards her, kissing her on the forehead again and wrapping his arms around her a little tighter. “We can do that,” he agreed, still looking at her. “And I don’t have work or anything tomorrow so you can have me all day then as well. I can take you out to the barn if you want,” he told her. Even if she hadn’t come over that night he probably would have ended up heading out there to spend the day with her anyway, but this literally gave them the entire day anyway, depending on when she decided to go back home. but with my eyes closed all i see is the skyline, through the window, the moon above you and the streets below, hold my breath as you're moving in, taste your lips and feel your skin, when the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly, stay with me, baby stay with me, tonight don't leave me alone |
