Lately Danny's life had been a bit of a roller coaster of high's and low's. He'd been in the lowest of the low's when he had first come to Addison and met Elisabeth Harper. She had intrigued him, but she had seemed so tantalizing, like she was there but just out of his reach. After all, she was a Harper, and Danny was just a Jenner, and he was hardly ready for a new serious relationship after the way his last one had ended. There was nothing he could do about any of it now so he'd just carried on with his work and ignored her... or at least he tried to. It didn't work out so well for him. That was when the first hill in this roller coaster ride had come about, but it hadn't lasted long before a steep plunge when she told him that she had to go back to Wales because her Visa was expiring. It seemed like that could have very well been the end of this thing, but knowing Danny as well as everyone did, it wasn't hard to predict that he would do something about it... and so he had. They had been married for nearly seven months now, and even though he would still consider this one of the highest points of his life, they were in a bit of a slump right now. Beth had baby fever, badly. She'd had it for some time now, thanks to Lincoln and Katie and most recently Kody and Ashton having babies, and she wanted one of her own desperately... but Danny just wasn't ready for a baby. To be honest, the idea of it scared him a bit. He regularly saw Ash slumping around the barn looking like a ghost several months before their twins were even born, and he wasn't sure he could handle that. He was irritable enough as it was, if he was that exhausted before the baby even came, chances are he would kill someone. Not that Beth was anywhere even close to the intensity of Kody, but she could still be quite... well, a Harper. At first he kept turning her down when she brought up babies, and eventually she stopped bringing it up. That just made him feel guilty though, so before too long he finally gave up and told her that if she wanted a baby then that was what he wanted too... and before long, baby preparations were underway... much to the dismay of Avery who looked like she was about ready to move out to the barn if they kept it up. Unfortunately for them, though, pregnancy test after pregnancy test came up negative, and the more negative tests they got, the more "baby making" started to feel like a chore rather than something they did because they loved each other... and on top of that, Danny began to feel guilty for having said no for so long. What if he'd made her wait too long? Eventually, they just stopped trying. They had essentially lost hope. Sure, Beth still had babies around, and considering it was foaling season there were lots of equine babies running around, but he knew how badly she wanted her own, and not being able to give that to her was killing him. Thankfully, things kept coming up to sort of distract them from their plight. The spring barn party, for one. Beth was very detail oriented and threw herself whole heartedly into planning the party. From fliers to invites to the caterer and decorations and music, she pretty well did it all herself... with a few nit picky things from Nate along the way, like his insistence that if they were going to do it, they couldn't have just a random section of tables off to the side. It had to be balanced and orderly, and god forbid they use that pink with that purple because it just clashed too much. Sometimes Danny could swear that Nate was not a straight man. Nevertheless, he just did as she told him, like rounding up "volunteers" to help with the setup. Even once everything was done and everyone was there and things were going smoothly, Beth was still buzzing around doing this that and the other thing. At first Danny just stood back and watched her, but that left him with too much time to think, so rather than letting her wear herself ragged he walked down to where she was giving someone directions about something, wrapped his arm around her waist while she was mid-sentence, and pulled her to him, turning her as he did so that she was facing him, and without saying a word just leaned down and kissed her. It might not have seemed too an extraordinary thing for your average person, but Danny was far from average, and PDA was definitely not his thing. Even getting him to hold hands in public was hard work sometimes. "I love you Beth," he said straightening back up, still smiling down at her, "but you really should just take a minute to not be the boss." Beth had worked too hard on this party to not enjoy it for a little while, and he would really like to enjoy it with her, which was saying a lot, because Danny did not normally enjoy social gatherings... at all. |
