k i s s m e o n t h e s i d e w a l kt a k e a w a y t h e p a i n b e c a u s e i s e e[ SPARKS FLY ]- - - - - - - - - - Honestly, Ches had no idea why she and Jay were doing this. Neither of them really wanted Ethel running around town, given that she was a nosy bugger and Jay was already nursing an intense dislike for her younger sister. Presumably it had something to do with the time she’d come to visit, but honestly, the redhead didn’t have much of a clue. Not that she was overly bothered by it; she didn’t intend for either of them to meet each other’s families any time soon. Generally, she was fairly sure him and her family would be okay, given that they were all drowning in alcohol and debauchery anyway, but her father and Ethan could be a little scary sometimes. The thought of them sending Jay running for the hills didn’t please her overmuch, so they’d just avoid crazy family members until it didn’t matter anymore.
Turning the engine off and pulling the keys out of the ignition, Cheshire pulled herself out of the car somewhat reluctantly. Typically, it had been her mother’s idea to look at sending Ethel to Addison High for a year whilst the boys were receiving training at the army base in Dallas, so it was now up to Scarlette to get an idea of what the school was like. Frankly, she didn’t see that it mattered when her little sister was the least academic person in the world and would be much happier dropping out of school at sixteen as Ethan and Ferris had done. Oh well, it wasn’t for her to say. The Australian closed her door, looking over at her room mate and, as a recent addition, her boyfriend, tilting her head a little to the side to avoid looking straight into the sun. It was funny really, taking into account how much she’d disliked him when they’d started living together. Honestly, Ches didn’t remember any time she’d ever been in such a prolonged bad mood as then, and he hadn’t done much to endear himself by pushing all of her buttons at any available opportunity. But then that was Jay, and it wasn’t going to change anytime soon. He still had a habit of infuriating her on a regular basis, but it was getting a little easier to deal with.
Regardless, they didn’t seem to have much of a choice in how they felt about each other, so there was little point in trying to figure how or even why they’d ended up dating when it probably would have been wiser to leave that for a time when they weren’t living together. Although, it did have added convenience, and it meant Jay could help her with Journalism pretty much whenever. Accepting the fact she was trying to procrastinate as long as possible, and that if they didn’t get a move on they were going to be late for their meeting with the head of the school, she gave Jay possibly the most unenthusiastic look in the world. “You ready?”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #96bc5e solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]push me to the floor, make me think Jay still didn’t know how the hell he had ended up in a committed relationship. More to the point, he didn’t know how the hell he had ended up in a committed relationship with Ches. The fiery red head and he had been going out for a few months, and to be honest, he was actually happy. Granted, he was petrified of the girl, but she was willing to experiment in the bedroom department. It also meant he was having regular sex with a single girl. That scared the shit out of him. Committed relationship, monogamy and the only thing he could think of was how whipped he was. He was whipped. Ches got him to drive them to the local high school, because her annoying brat of a sister was thinking of moving to the States. He detested the idea. Hated it.
Well, Ches was driving, seeing that Jay had gone and fractured a few small bones in his foot a few days ago, making anything extremely painful. He couldn’t get a cast, because it would look stupid, but he couldn’t ride either. Sparrow didn’t get hot just standing around, and frankly, Jay thought the horse would prefer it, but he did just want to get back in the saddle. Asking Ches to ride wasn’t the best idea, because even if she agreed, she and Sparrow nursed a mutual dislike for each other.
Getting out of the car, he hid his wince and went to Ches, taking her hand in his and sighing. “Do we really have to bring Ethel here? Can’t we just say the school is full?” he said helplessly, granting her a pleading look. By the looks of it, she didn’t want to be here in the first place, so maybe they could hatch a plan and just not meet the principal, not have the tour of the school and not receive the enrolment papers. It would make life so much easier than what it was at the moment. With a slight limp in his step, he walked to the secretary’s office and asked for the principal, trying his best to look interested in everything.
When the office door opened, and Jay looked up, he almost fainted. In Addison, Texas, he did not expect to see his uncle of all people. He did not expect to see family or anything of the sort. He had specifically left so that he wouldn’t have anything to do with his father’s side of the family, despite loving his uncle dearly. “Uncle Malachi?” he said in utter shock, his features paler than usual. He actually had to hold onto the desk, shaking his head. ”What the hell are you doing here?”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #274a5e solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]Malachi day at work was feeling longer than usual. He didn’t know why, but he wondered if he wasn’t coming down with some sort of bug. In a school like this, he wouldn’t be surprised if he had, but he would keep taking his vitamins and supplements and keep hoping for the best. He had three horses that didn’t like standing, and he didn’t know any work riders who would ride them. Even sick, Malachi had priorities, but his horses came first, no matter what, not even his job was able to replace that.
Once his desk was organised, he groaned inwardly when the phone rang. His one meeting was here, and straightening his shirt, he got up and opened the door, a warm smile already gracing his features. What he saw was like a blast from the past. His nephew, Jay, was standing in front of him, and he hadn’t seen the boy in two years. It was a surprise, because in a town this small, he didn’t think he would ever find his nephew in Texas.
It wasn’t a secret that the problems that Jay and his father had, and Malachi blamed his brother for the problems that was in the family. It was horrible spending Christmas in Wales, the tenseness in the air almost thick enough to be cut like butter. Being born rich was something that many people didn’t quite think of as a curse, but that was what it was for Malachi.
“Yes. Yes, it’s me,” Malachi answered, grinning broadly and pulling Jay into a bear hug. “You’ve grown,” he commented, chuckling softly at the boy’s surprised expression. It was good to see his nephew again, but under such circumstances, it was odd, even a little daunting.

k i s s m e o n t h e s i d e w a l kt a k e a w a y t h e p a i n b e c a u s e i s e e[ SPARKS FLY ]- - - - - - - - - - Ches understood Jay’s reluctance to go look at the school entirely, although their mutual dislike for each other was not the only reason she didn’t want her sister around. It wasn’t like Cheshire to be jealous or paranoid, but she was constantly harbouring the worry that Ethel would be a better dancer than her someday. Without the problem of the extra height and the issues that came with loose ligaments, it was entirely possible and after all the years of work Scarlette had put in that was not really something she wanted, understandably. On another note, she still wanted to know how Jay had even managed to fracture the toes in his foot by being stepped on by Sparrow…she’d had it happen to her before, and as far as she knew that wasn’t really a common result of it. Bruising and pain, sure. Broken toes? Not so much.
But that was Jay, always his weird and wayward self. She still couldn’t quite figure out how all of this had happened because he had driven her round the bend with his incessant smart remarks to start with. They were still lurking somewhere, but at least they’d called a truce…of sorts, she supposed. There were still days where she wanted to hit him with a shoe for being such a dick more often than not, although they were beginning to get more bearable. She supposed he just couldn’t help it a lot of the time. “Yes, yes we do have to look at least. And no we can’t because otherwise my parents will hang me from the rafters when I go back home. Somehow I doubt either of us wants that.” Well, he might, but if he had Jay was the type to tell her straight instead of pansying about. She thought. Was he? Surely he must be. Oh Jesus, she just never knew with him. He was downright impossible to work out and she hated it.
They headed inside, and Cheshire caught a glimpse of somebody coming to meet them out of the corner of her eye. Presumably he must be the principal, right? Yup, definitely, seeing as he’d just come out of an office that had ‘PRINCIPAL’ emblazoned all over it. Jeez, she knew kids had to learn but somehow she doubted that they were all visually impaired. Where was all the sarcasm coming from? She had no idea…maybe it was a side-effect of not being allowed to let it all loose on Jay these days.
The redhead watched as her boyfriend went distinctly paler than usual at the sight of the dean. Err, okay? He didn’t look that scary to her. Of course, that was before Jay then said the word ‘Uncle’ right before the principal’s name. Uncle Malachi. What the hell. This thought was just not processing in her head. And then of course the principal went and had to make it a case of non-mistaken identity by yanking Jay into a hug that looked worthy of the ones Ethan tended to give when he wasn’t busy sleeping with the entire female population of Australia. Ches couldn’t help but stare.
”He’s twenty-one. What are the chances of him having grown since you last saw him? More to the point, you have an uncle in Texas? In the education system? Good heavens, I never thought I’d see the day someone directly related to Jay would willingly have anything to do with a school.”
So she digressed somewhat, but that was Ches when something took her by surprise. Avoid hitting Jay by changing the subject, right? Of all the things she’d expected to come across when preparing herself for the appointment, ‘what to say when Jay’s uncle turns out to be the principal’ had not been a scenario she had envisaged. To be fair Jay looked pretty surprised as well, although it could either have been because his uncle was now residing in Texas or because he was the principal. Of a school. Those things Jay seemed to be notoriously bad at setting foot in without trying to bang every pair of legs he saw in high heels. And even those not in high heels, just as long as they were female. Cheshire would know. The thing about having a boyfriend who had been your room mate before you’d gotten together was that you tended to know way too much about who they’d slept with and who they hadn’t (that list was notably shorter than that of the former in Jay’s case). Heck, he might even have given Ethan a run for his money at the rate he’d been going before they’d…you know. Fallen into bed with each other. Moving along, the point was that she hadn’t really wanted to meet any family members just yet…then again, he’d had to deal with Ethel’s unexpected arrival, so presumably it was just karma. That didn’t, however, mean she intended to put away the sass just because it might be polite. For those that didn’t know, Cheshire didn’t really do polite.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #96bc5e solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]push me to the floor, make me think Jay was now in a general state of shock. He wasn’t really processing what was going on, apart from being pulled in a giant bear hug by his uncle and Ches probably making some sort of sarcastic comment. He was just standing there, too stunned to do anything. He wanted to know what his uncle was doing in Texas. Especially in Addison. Jay had moved to the States to get away from his family, not to stay for a year and then coincidentally run into his uncle that he hadn’t seen in a while.
Suddenly Jay’s brain caught up to life and he took a deep, shuddering breath. Dad isn’t here with you? Jay asked, his posture stiffening and he straightened up to his full height. The one thing that he hated about his family was the fact that there was so much that hatred from his side. He wanted nothing more than just to escape his family in its entirety, but escaping his father was good enough for him. It had been almost two years since he had seen his father, but even that was too short a time.
People were starting to stare in the corridor, and seeing that most of these people were teenagers, Jay was feeling a whole lot of discomfort. He didn’t bother asking Malachi’s permission, walking into the office. He didn’t want to reveal to Ches how screwed up his family was, but he guessed that in a way, she knew. Since he had met her, his life had been happier, and the sex had nothing to do with it. Ches just kept him in his place, and he wanted nothing more. He was happier now than before, and now that he knew his uncle was here, it was going to cause him a whole of concern, his mind already coming to some odd conclusions.
Jay sat down in one of the chairs, running a hand through his already messy hair. Why are you here? he asked Malachi almost accusingly, but more out of curiosity than anything else. In his childhood, Malachi had been more than a father to him than his own father. It had been Malachi that had made the effort to come and see him in London, take him fishing and teach him to ride a bike. When Jay had been sent off to boarding school, life became a whole lot more bitter, but the school had been placed close to a girl’s boarding school, and it was then that the throes of puberty had managed to worm into Jay’s life.
And he hadn’t stopped until he met Ches, which was probably a good thing. It was supposedly time to settle down for a while, and he was coping brilliantly at being the loyal, steadfast boyfriend.

Listening to the red head’s snarky comment, he could only grin. Judging by the way Jay is acting around you, you must be his girlfriend. Which is odd, because we never really thought he would up dating one. I know he slept through his high school, but there was always the doubt, he said, following Jay into the office, stepping back to allow the red head into the office.
Malachi sat down behind his desk, looking at Jay’s pale features. No. He isn’t, he assured his nephew on the issue of his father. Granted, his brother was an arsehole, a major one at that, he also hated the man for not being a father to his son. Malachi then brightened up slightly more at the following question. Well, I wanted to live in a small town, and Addison High had the opening, so I applied and I got the job. Trust me, I never knew you were here, he answered, clearing his desk slightly.
So, you were intending to come here to enquire about enrolment for a sibling? What would you like to know? he asked them, turning back to the business side for a moment. There would always be enough time to catch up later.

Post by Scarlette Kat Cheshire on Jan 28, 2013 8:44:54 GMT -8
Cheshire’s family was by nature big and loud. With the exception of Ethel, they were all pretty close. So in short, Jay’s family situation made absolutely no sense to her. How could he be so distant from his father, even if he was an asshole? That said, her own father wouldn’t hesitate to put a bullet through Jay’s shoulder blades if he thought it was deserved so maybe she wasn’t one to talk about functional families. The point was – she knew he didn’t want her to know the details of his family, and she supposed she was kind of the same. He had no reason to know about the juvie sentence Ethel had served, or the rivalry between the two sisters, or the fact everyone was fully aware of the fact Cheshire was favoured over her sibling. Her mother could hardly look at Ethel these days, terrified she might turn out to be a better dancer than the daughter she’d poured all the money and effort into. Lalit and Ethan were both loose cannons around the girl, always on the edge of snapping and lashing out at her.
So instead Ethel had gone down the wrong track: drugs and alcohol. At sixteen she was that relation nobody wanted to talk about, the one who had been done for possession of weed and who frequently couldn’t remember entire weeks of her life because of the alcohol-soaked life she led. Nobody had a good word to say about her except the people in her dance class, and even then it was mainly because she was the best by far. Her attitude left a lot to be desired, she never said sorry for anything and most everyone had at least one or two issues with her – and that was the way Ethel liked it.
Suffice to say Scarlette didn’t want her in Addison, especially not now that Malachi was Jay’s uncle.
Blue eyes landed calmly on the principal’s, a slight smile flickering on her face. So she wasn’t the only who had been under the impression Jay might have been in the closet at some point. That wasn’t something he’d be allowed to forget very soon, and they both knew it. ”I am indeed. And don’t worry, you weren’t the only one who was surprised,” she added on the end as she followed the two men into Malachi’s office. She placed herself in the chair next to Jay’s, shifting when the thought of the last time the redhead had been in a principal’s office came to mind. It had included both of her parents and the family of a boy in her class, and it hadn’t been a pretty meeting. Maybe I’m more like Ethel than I thought.
”You willingly chose to live in what is effectively four houses placed in a square? she muttered, half to herself. ”Jesus Christ, you must be mental.”
True, she’d grown up out in the sticks, but she had been close enough to Sydney to be able to say that Addison had driven her stir crazy the first few months she’d lived here. Jay hadn’t helped either, but that was a story for another time.
”Yes. I’m here about my sister, Ethel. She has…” Ches waved a hand for a moment, trying to think of a word that would cover all of Ethel’s – ”issues.’ The dancer watched Jay’s uncle carefully for his reaction, trying to gauge what he’d say next. Cheshire wasn’t even painting Ethel in a bad light so Malachi would refuse to take her, because her school and criminal records spoke for themselves. And that was without mentioning her little sister’s tattoos and piercings and dress sense. Or her distinct lack of academicism. Or her constant and insane obsession with dance training that kept her out of school classes. As much as she didn’t want to go spilling all of Ethel’s secrets in front of her boyfriend, there didn’t seem to be much of a choice. Ches sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
”My point is, she’s already been to a correctional facility for six months after being charged with the possession of weed. She’s in school therapy and has been since she was fourteen. She’s failing every single class she’s in at school, and half the time she’s got a hangover larger than the state of Texas. The other fifty percent she’s drinking herself towards amnesia the next morning. She dances, but that keeps her out of academic classes because she has a self-destructive need to train for hours every day and, her attitude means that I can guarantee you’ll be trying to keep her from breaking every jock’s nose in this place within a week. Ethel will deliberately provoke other students into arguments and there is a very long list of reasons why she’s not welcome back at her old school. Those are just the beginning of it.”
”And you,” she said, her attention switching to Jay, ”will not repeat a word of that to anyone. Ever.”
So there it was. Everything that Ches didn’t want in Addison, and a whole lot more. She felt sorry for her sister in a way, but there was limited pity she could have for somebody who was so intent on self-assassination when they were still so young. God only knew what happened in those hours Ethel couldn’t remember, or those weekends she didn’t bother to come home because of the bruise Lalit had left on her face. Where she went, who she saw, what they did, they were all now life’s mysteries – And Ethel didn’t seem to care at all.
”So how alternative do you like your students to be, Mr Griffyn?”
