[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #d96a70 solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]bless your soul you've Sam didn’t how she should have felt about the whole thing. It had taken time, but she had finally been able to talk, and when she did, it hadn’t taken a few days till she was placed in a foster home, thankfully also in Addison. Her father’s parting gift was a back hand to her face, the first time he had ever struck her, and the bruising was a deep purple, shading a yellow around the edges. She was scared, insecure, and she hadn’t eaten in a few days. Her anorexia was becoming worse, but thankfully she hadn’t lost enough weight for that to become noticeable just yet.
She hadn’t been told much about her new ‘family’ just yet. Apparently they were ‘nice’ and there were other children there as well. Sam didn’t want a new family though, she just wanted the one that she had, but with her mother and Jake with her. Her father could go rot in hell for all she cared, but the two most important people in her life were gone. Her mother dead, and her brother disappearing a few months ago like a thief in the night.
Her other worry was Shiloh. Sam hadn’t been at the stable, and she didn’t know if her beloved pony was still there or if she had been sent to an auction where the best thing she would be good for was the meat market. As soon as she had a chance, she would ask someone to drive her to Crossfire and hope that the chestnut pony was still there. If she wasn’t, then Sam would deal with the heart ache, grieve a little and then just move on.
In the trunk of the social worker’s car was her belongings, everything important packed into a suitcase, and the rest was probably still at home somewhere, hidden in the places that she and Jake had found. How could this have become her life? She should have just kept her mouth shut, and none of this would have happened. Yes, it would have been hell, but at least she would have been at home.
Then Sam started thinking about the positives, or the ones she could have forced out of herself. She would maybe be able to get a dog, or a cat. She would actually just want a pet of her own, a companion that would answer to her. According to Jake, they had had a dog when they were young, but once their mother had died, their father had gotten rid of it. Like most things belonging to her mother.
Once the car had stopped, Sam got out hesitantly, a slight shivering picking up in her body, sinking all the way to her bones, and mixing with her nerves. It was a decent looking house, no, she had lived in a house. There seemed to be something more, and she realised that it this is what a home looked like. There was a comforting warmth to this place, and for once, Sam knew she should have gotten out of the hell she was a long time ago.
Scuffing her shoes against the pavement nervously, she held her suitcase and then walked up the path to the front door, standing behind the social worker, her head bowed and shoulders hunched.

And the fact that Lena and Charlie were siblings, living together, and both came from rather upstanding professions – well, she was a nurse and he was a police officer, there was certainly nothing shady about that – had been why it had been relatively easy to be listed as foster carers. Well, Charlie had been approached about it first and he had come and spoken to her about it, although she hadn’t really seen the problem with it, it wasn’t like they didn’t have experience with children, of any age really, and why not offer a stable home environment to someone who needed it?
It had been a while since they had been put into the program, and this was the first time that they’d actually had a call about taking in a foster child… a fifteen year old they had been told who had been living alone with an abusive father. They had said yes, of course, and now she was due to be arriving today. Charlie was due to finish work after she had arrived, but that didn’t worry her, she was fairly sure that she would be able to handle her arrival by herself… or at least, she hoped that she would.
Jessie was sat at the dining table, engrossed in her homework, occasionally speaking up if she needed help with anything… something that didn’t seem to happen too often, since the nine year old didn’t seem to have any trouble picking anything she was taught up quickly. And Jack was curled up on the couch with the two black Labs, Thor and Beau, using Thor as a pillow while he watched SpongeBob, Beau in turn using the five year old’s legs as a pillow as well, snoring occasionally. He’d probably fall asleep soon, since he had been outside running around with the two canines for a good period of time before he had migrated back inside.
Hearing the doorbell ring, she quickly wiped her hands on a tea towel in the kitchen, leaving it sitting on the bench as she went to answer the door, figuring that it was most likely their new arrival. Jessie momentarily looked up from her homework at the sound, watching Lena walk to the door before concentrating on her work again instead, although both dogs stared at the door the whole time, but didn’t get up and move from where they were lying, more curious than anything.
Opening the door, to reveal the social worker that she had spoken to the day before, she said her greetings to the woman, giving the girl standing behind her… who she had been told was called Samantha… a friendly smile when she stepped aside to reveal her standing there, figuring that obviously this probably wasn’t an easy thing for her, so she wasn’t going to be over the top with it all… not that she was ever really over the top with anything to begin with.
“Hey, I’m Lena. Do you want to come in?” she introduced herself, stepping aside so they could come through the door and into the house. Baby steps, always worked the best, she hadn’t worked in the ER of the local hospital without seeing her fair share of abuse victims, so she knew that taking it slowly and carefully was the best way to handle it.

How could she have gone and spoken about what was going on. She had just ruined all life she had ever known, and because of it, she might be losing her beloved pony as well. Looking at the woman that had opened the door, she took a deep breath and stepped inside. Sam had no make up to hide her bruised eye, and she suddenly regretted it.
She had no doubt that the situation had been explained to the woman and man that were going to foster her and Sam felt embarrassed, because somehow she felt like it was her fault. Her fault that her father decided that enough was enough and given her the final blow. Without Jake she felt exposed, alone in the world without any family that would be able to love her. As she looked around the house, she saw two younger children, one doing homework and the other watching cartoons. There were dogs as well, but they seemed part of the family, not like the pit bull that her father owned. That dog still terrified her.
Chewing her bottom lip, she placed her suitcase out of the way, only to start wringing her hands nervously. This frightened her a lot, because she didn’t know what Lena was like, but she seemed kind enough. Sam, pleasure to meet you, she said, forcing a small smile onto her features. She knew it was painfully polite, but what else could she be. It wasn’t like she was overly friendly with Lena, but after a while she would start to open up. Maybe this would become her new family, the one she always wanted.
Can I go settle into my room? she asked hesitantly, forcing herself to still her nervous actions. The pit in her stomach was still there, a vice clamp that weighed her down, causing her to shake slightly as dread filled her body. What if her father found out where she was? She couldn’t face him again. Not after she had been taken away from him. Sam just wanted time. Time to settle in, time to be alone, time to collect and calm herself and make sure that she was going to be okay. She knew she was going to be okay, but she didn’t know to what extent.

She watched as she walked in, turning her attention back to the social worker once she had, exchanging a few words with the woman and telling her that yes, she would definitely call if there were any problems, before the woman turned and walked back down the garden path to the car they had arrived in. Turning back into the house, Lena shut the door behind them, gaze quickly finding Sam where she had stopped.
“It’s nice to meet you too Sam,” she answered, giving the girl an encouraging smile… if only the circumstances were better than what they currently were.
She nodded when she asked if she could be shown to her room, figuring that it would probably be more comfortable for her to let her get settled in a bit before she started the rest of the introductions… at least Jessie and Jack were good kids and she didn’t think there would be any problems with them getting used to having someone else around, nor did she think that they would bother her that much. And Charlie would be home soon anyway, his shift would have ended a few minutes ago, if the clock on the wall was anything to go by, and since Addison wasn’t a large town it wouldn’t take him long to drive home. “Sure thing, come with me,” she answered, gesturing for her to follow her up the staircase and into the upper level of the house.
She led her to the house’s spare bedroom, which she had set up with the basics for now, not really wanting to furnish it anymore until they had figured out what would be going on with the foster carer thing, but now that they had Sam she would probably just end up letting her choose what she wanted to go in it, whatever made her feel more comfortable. She stopped at the door when they reached the room, leaning against the doorframe a little. “This is your room… I’ll leave you to get settled in, just come down whenever you’re ready, and I’ll show you where everything else is later. Oh, and is there anything that you don’t eat?” she asked, as an afterthought, figuring that she should probably make sure before she started getting dinner ready.

There were rooms, and everything was clean, but she didn’t actually care. She just wondered how long it would take until her father decided that he wanted her back. Shuddering lightly, she managed a small smile in Lena’s direction once she was in the room, everything pretty bare. I’m not fussy, she murmured, placing her bags down on the bed.
She waited until Lena had left until starting to unpack her things. Sam hung up her clothes and unpacked her photo’s, placing them on the night stand. There were only two, one of Jake, her and their mom a very long time ago, and then one more recent one of Jake. Photo’s were so easy to use to remember things that had long past, but the first one hurt Sam the most, because she couldn’t remember her mother. She couldn’t remember her laugh, or how she spoke. Sam just couldn’t remember.
Sam slid the suitcases under the bed, and took a deep breath. She would have to go downstairs now, try and come out her shell, be social. Everything that she wasn’t, everything that she couldn’t be because she had been told that talking, about anything, was bad. When she had finally talked, she had received a slap through the face and was tossed into unknown waters. Pulling on a pair of thick socks, she padded down to the kitchen. Anything I can help you with? she asked Lena softly.
There were two other children in the house as well, but they seemed okay. Not the screaming, throwing tantrum types that she had often encountered in the supermarkets. They actually seemed like well behaved children, but Sam would first get her bearings, settle into the new house and where she fit in into the whole general swing of things. It was settling in that unsettled her, and until she actually figured out where she fit in, she would just keep to herself, and do the things that were expected of her.

Of course, she was concerned about her but not to the point of being overbearing, and that was the last way she wanted to come across to her, because then it was less likely that she would come and tell her anything she needed to, if she was worried that they were going to overreact about it.
Once she was downstairs she started to get dinner ready… settling on spaghetti, for the meal, figuring that it wasn’t something that you could really go terribly wrong with, and most people tended to eat it… Sam had said that she wasn’t fussy about what she ate but she still didn’t know what the young teenager liked and what she didn’t, so simple seemed to be the best option to go with right now until she had figured a bit more out about it.
She got started on the cooking, hearing her voice behind her after a while, turning to give her another smile. “Umm, I think I’m alright for now, but I’ll let you know if I need a hand with anything… these are my two children, by the way. Jessie, and Jack over at the television there… and with him are Beau and Thor, they’re very friendly so you shouldn’t have any problems with them, but I do apologise if you wake up in the middle of the night and they’re in bed with you. Charlie should be home soon… he’s my brother… so you’ll be able to meet him,” she answered, hearing the front door open as she had nearly finished speaking, watching Jack and both dogs jump up and run out into the hallway at the sound as well.
“Actually, that’s probably him now,” she said, giving her another smile.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #484e78 solid 10px; width: 399px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]my heart wasn't enough so far from where i used to be when she was mine Today had been a relatively good day at work. It had been one of those days where nothing majorly bad had happened so it was almost completely stress free, and today was the last day he wanted to come home from work exhausted and stressed out, considering their foster child was meant to be arriving that day, and especially considering when he knew the reason that she had been sent to live with them in the first place. Not that he ever really got angry, actually, it was a rare instance when he did but it was better to be in a good state of mind when these things were happening.
He pulled his car into the driveway, killing the engine and getting out, locking the doors behind him with a simple click of the auto locking button hanging on his car keys. He walked up to the house, letting himself in, glad of the warmth from inside the house after coming in from the cold, only just shutting the door behind him when he was ambushed by Jack and both Labradors. “Charlie!” he grinned down at the blonde six year old when he greeted him, shrugging off his jacket and hanging it at the door.
“Hey buddy,” he answered, turning back around to pick his nephew up when he reached up towards him, swinging him up into his arms before walking further into the house, figuring that Lena and Jessie would probably be in the living area… and Samantha too, if she had arrived already. He walked into the room, letting an easy smile spread across his face as he did so, spotting Lena, Jessie and of course, the girl he hadn’t seen before but assumed was Samantha in there.
“Hey everyone.”

With all the problems that had plagued her family, she just wanted to fit in somewhere and she was sure that with time that she would fit in with the Lena and Charlie. She was going to be sixteen soon, so it was just somewhat disconcerting to know that she would be able to actually celebrate her birthday, not just wish that it would pass.
She looked at each of the children as Lena introduced them, and gave them each a smile. The dogs seemed goofy enough, but she didn’t mind that in the slightest. After her father pit bull, any other dog seemed perfect. I wouldn’t mind, she said softly, looking up as she heard the door open and instinctively she moved back a few steps, ducking her head so that the hair fell across her face, hiding the blue eye. She tried to fight off the panic that usually came with hearing the front door open and close, and she had the strong urge to run up to her room and check her homework, making sure that she had finished it all, and that she had some decent grades to show.
Sam realised in what type of hell she grown up in, how controlled she had been. Instead, she lifted her head, and gave who she thought was Charlie a faint smile, but her cheek and eye were stinging, and to be honest, she was scared. This was place was too new for her, too life changing. She didn’t have friends that she could stay over at, and her father had kept such a tight leash on her that she didn’t actually want any. Now, on the other hand, she could actually meet people. The idea of socialising terrified her and it was difficult to actually think about it becoming a reality.
This was why she preferred the company of horses. The moments didn’t become awkward, and they accepted her for who she was. Now, here she was in a kitchen, feeling like an outsider, and even with the reminder that she had her own bedroom and her things were in place, it still felt as if she didn’t belong.

Even now that they had separated, she was glad that they didn’t have any bad memories of their father, even if they probably wouldn’t actually see him that much anymore, because at least it was better than being terrified of their own father because of things he had done. She’d made sure that they only remembered the good things… Jessie, anyway, Jack had been too young to understand and probably had no recollection of his father… and she hadn’t even taken them to see him when he had been in jail, as harsh as it might have seemed she didn’t want them to see their dad like that.
She couldn’t help but notice how Sam reacted when she heard the door open, but didn’t say anything, continuing with her preparation of dinner, although she kept a careful watch on her from the corner of her eye. She didn’t blame her really, it was all probably a lot for her to take it and it would probably take her a while to start relaxing while she was here.
Charlie walked into the kitchen carry Jack, and she gave her twin a smile. “Hey,” she greeted him, stopping what she was doing for a moment and glancing over at Sam after she had, the smile still on her face, figuring that staying positive would probably help the most right now. “Sam, this is Charlie... and Charlie, this is Sam,” she introduced them to each other, indicating between them as she did so before turning her attention back to preparing dinner, letting them finish the rest of their greetings on their own. Luckily Charlie was a calm sort of man, of course he could be imposing when he wanted to be, but that only ever came out when he was on the job or he really, really needed to be, so hopefully it wouldn’t take her an awfully long time to get used to him, since she knew that it was her dad who had been abusive, after all.

This family seemed pretty decent, but then again, for appearances, people had thought that her family had been pretty decent as well. Her father had been a respected member of the community, but that hadn’t amounted to much in the end. Lena turned away from the food to introduce the two of them, and Sam managed to meet his eyes. Pleasure to meet you Charlie, she murmured quietly, shuffling her foot nervously against the tiled floor.
This was the point where she would have preferred to have just gone to her room, and do work she didn’t have to, or study for tests that weren’t scheduled yet. Except this time, she was going to have to be polite and decent. These were the people that had taken her into their home, that had given her a chance to have a somewhat normal life. As scratched an itch on her cheek, she winced when she touched the blackened spot on her cheek. It stung, a cruel memory about what had happened to her.
In all honesty, she could only wish that her mother had been alive and that her father had turned out to be a better man. If that had been the case, then she would never have been standing in strange kitchen, trying her best not to flee. This was the time when she would desperately have wanted to disappeared to Shiloh’s stall, wrap her arms around the mare’s neck and just talk to her horse. Fate was cruel, especially since she didn’t know if her beloved mare would be at the stables the next time she got the chance to go ride.

It was definitely nice to come home to this after a day of work.
Reaching down to mess Jack’s hair and giving his nephew a smile for a moment, he turned his attention back to Sam, it was easy to tell that she was nervous and he really didn’t blame her for it, all things considering. “How are you settling in so far?” he asked, knowing that she had only been here for a short amount of time but it was probably a good idea to let her know that she could actually talk to them, without pushing the matter too far of course… not demanding that she keep speaking to them about absolutely everything from the moment she set foot into the house but enough to let her know that they were approachable.
After she had answered he focused his attention on Lena for a moment, who was still there getting their meal ready. “Am I going to feed the horses after we eat or are you? Or are we all heading over to the barn?” he asked. Sometimes they took turns, but usually they all went out to sort the horses out… Jessie and Jack included… but with the fact that Sam had only just arrived and was still settling in meant that normal routine might end up being broken, which didn’t bother him really, it was just a matter of sorting out what they were going to do.

After all, she would only be in the system for another few years, so she wasn’t going to spend it in different foster homes. She wasn’t a troublemaker, anything but. She hated socialising, but she enjoyed her sports. In a few months she would be sixteen, and she was going to be starting her sophomore year in high school. Despite not having a family in the conventional sense, she was sure that it was going to be okay.
She gave Charlie a small smile as he asked her how she was settling in. Fine, thank you, she answered him, not sure how much she should really talk. Sam wasn’t one to talk, but she did it when she needed to. Jake had really been the one person that she talked to, and could trust, but that had all changed when she had felt their father’s anger the morning that he was discovered to be gone. That had been the one day that Sam had been scared, truly scared, of her father. The mere thought had made her shudder in fear in the kitchen of her foster parents, but she did her best to squash down the panic.
Sam perked slightly when she heard the word stables, and she wondered if it would be out of place to ask to go with. She wouldn’t know until she tried, but she didn’t know how to get the words out either. She would definitely had to before one of them left, so she took a deep breath. Um. Mind if I go with to the stables? I need to make sure my mare is okay, she asked with a small smile, surprised that she had even spoken in the first place. Sam really hoped that Shiloh was at Cross Fire, that her father hadn’t taken that small piece of happiness away from her.

She wasn’t too worried about Jessie and Jack getting to know her just yet, she knew that they would start talking to her soon anyway, if not while they were at the dinner table, they were friendly kids and they understood some of what was going on, mostly that she would be living with them now, so she was sure it wouldn’t take long for them to be comfortable enough to talk to her. And they weren’t the type of kids to be over the top either, which was a bonus.
She looked over when Charlie asked her what they were going to do about the horses tonight, contemplating it for a few moments. Well, she hadn’t really thought about it yet, it hadn’t worried her too much because she knew that they would sort something out, and it had all really depended on how well Sam moving into the house went for the night. If it had seemed like the best thing would be quiet for her she would have told Charlie to take the kids with him to the barn and she would stay here, but it didn’t seem to be going badly right now so…
She looked over at Sam as she spoke, nodding her head when she asked if it was alright if she went, surprised to hear that she had a horse, since they hadn’t been told about that when they had been told that she would be living with them. “Of course you can. We’ll all go then, after dinner, unless you’d rather stay in Charlie. If she’s there we’ll talk to Beth about sorting her board out if we catch her, otherwise I’ll do it tomorrow,” she told her.
