It was later in the night, and Emilia wanted to do a last check on all the horses before she and Darius went home. There was her aisle of her three horses, and she had just checked on her other three in the main barn. Now she figured she'd take a look at her horses and Darius' lot.
Walking past one of the stalls, Emilia peered in and saw Dee lying curled up in the bedding. He opened his blue eyes and looked up at her, pinning his ears, clearly displeased with being woken up.
"Sorry handsome," Emilia murmured with a grin, shaking her head. She headed down the aisle, peering into the other stalls. Suddenly, Emilia heard a crash of a body hitting the wall then floor. With intense alarm and panic, she rushed over to the stall to see Darius's filly, Warm White Night, having collapsed against the stall and the ground, rolling violently, her dark coat slick with sweat as she lay, folding her neck up to nip her sides, kicking violently and snorting, nostrils flared.
"Shit.. Shit.. " Emilia's head whipped over her shoulder, searching frantically for her other half. She recognised colic anywhere and that was exactly what Darius' beloved filly was displaying as Emilia went in and knelt by her head. "Darius! Darius, come quickly!"

Taking the second aisle of his horses, he was happy to see that nothing major was wrong, Bounder still more restless and hadn't settled in much over the last few days. With time it would come though, so Darius wasn't too concerned. He then went to the side that Emilia was checking, but it was then that he heard her shout. Despite his limp, he was at Night's stall in an instant. His heart sank at the sight of his black filly, trying her best to roll.
He went into the stall, and cradled Night's head, running a hand soothingly along her neck. Em. Can you go call the vet? he asked her softly, keeping up the slow movements along Night's neck, his heart breaking as he thought about the amount of pain she must be in. Darius then slowly moved behind her, offering her some support in trying to get her off her side. Come on sweet girl, he murmured to his horse. Stand up for me, he went on, starting to rock her up.
Darius caught sight of her eyes. They were dull, no spark of life in them. He couldn't lose Night. She was his most promising horse, and losing her would break all his spirit. No. Night was going to survive. She just had to.

Emilia could practically see Darius' heart shatter through the look in his eyes as he knelt down beside his beloved filly. She knew how much Night meant to him, and if she could do anything to help, she would. When he spoke, Emilia nodded in response, digging her phone out of her pocket and and stepped out of the stall to call the vet.
"Hi, we've got a filly colicking, we need to get someone out here as soon as possible." She said quickly. After a few minutes of giving their location, Emilia hung up the phone and moved back into the stall, kneeling at Darius's side. "They're sending someone out right away."
She could easily see how distressed Darius was over his filly's well being. Emilia knew it would destroy him if something happened to her. She kissed Darius' shoulder, gently grazing her nails and fingertips along his lower back to try to comfort him in some way. "She's going to be okay, sweetheart," Emilia was trying to reassure him, trying to keep him thinking positively. She knew she'd be devastated if they lost Night, but she knew it would be ten times harder on him.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #838b74 solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]the dreams in which i'm dying Darius stroked the black cheek of the filly, trying to keep himself calm to keep Night calm. This was a horrible nightmare for him, and he mentally, he started cursing himself for everything that was happening. The filly had seemed a little off that morning, and he should have gotten a vet out, but he didn't think much of it because she managed to finish her breakfast and was grazing when he walked her out. It would be his fault if he lost her, and he would never really be able to forgive himself if something did happen to her.
Emilia came back into the stall, but he hardly registered what she was saying. This wasn't a time for comforting, and he shrugged her off, just wanting to have his space to his own. Now it was about getting Night up and walking, otherwise this wasn't going to end well. Moving to Night's side he slowly started massaging her stomach, falling into deep thought as he did so. He had raised the filly and he couldn't lose her. Not now and not like this.
After what seemed like forever, Night moved off her side and into a resting position, her breathing laboured. Darius could see that his poor horse was in pain, and he had no way to help her until the vet actually arrived. All he could do was sit and watch.

Emilia knew Darius was going through a lot at this moment with the filly, knew that he had a lot on his mind, but she still inwardly drew back. She couldn't recall a time since she and Darius had been together that he had ever shrugged her off like that. She couldn't help it but feel a bit hurt and dejected, feeling helpless to be there for the man she loved.
Taking the hint that he needed to be alone with his filly, Emilia drew a breath, standing as she moved to leave Darius be. She considered laying a hand on his shoulder as she passed, but thought against it after a tentative second, slipping out of the stall as she moved to the stall wall on the other side, crossing her arms over her chest and exhaled slowly, leaning back against the wall, eyes lowered. Darius needed time with Night. He needed to be by himself. She kept telling herself that as she waited for the vet to arrive.
When the white truck pulled up, Emilia glanced up and pushed herself off the wall, directing them to the stall where Night had gotten up, from what she could hear. Arms still crossed over her chest, she decided to keep her distance. She could only wait and see what Darius said regarding the filly's prognosis.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #838b74 solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]the dreams in which i'm dying Darius sat with Night as the vets worked around her, his eyes slowly deadening as the filly groaned repeatedly. He was sure that he was going to receive the news that she was going to to have to be put down, and he didn't know what he would have answered if that was going to be answer. On one hand, a part of him screamed yes, and the other shouted at him no, get a colic op and give her a chance. Darius stroked the black cheek, knowing that Night would never survive as a pasture ornament. It was in her bloodlines to run, to win, and having her live out her days as a companion just wasn't going to cut it.
After what seemed like forever, he got the all clear. The filly was going to be fine, and she just need some rest and a lot of care before being run again. Standing up, he slipped outside the stall, surprised to see Emilia still there. He was sure she had gone home, but he was happy to see her there. I'm sorry for being such an arse, he murmured, wrapping his arms around her waist and holding her close, kissing the top of her head softly. Night will be fine, he said, knowing that there was so much that he could have said, but those four words said enough.
I love you, he murmured, looking exhausted, his vocals slightly slurred. This had been a hell of a night, and all he wanted to do was go home and sleep. Sleep until he couldn't any more, and just have Emilia next to him as he did so. Dark bags under his eyes were just more pronounced, and he had a bad craving for a smoke. He didn't smoke much, only really doing it when he was highly stressed, and it was one of those moments right now.

Seeing Darius come out of the stall, Emilia glanced over. She could see how exhausted he was, that was evident in his face. When he came near, Emilia turned toward him, and feeling his arms wrap around her waist, Emilia wrapped her arms around his neck and shoulders in return, laying the side of her head against his chest and collarbone, drawing a breath.
"Its alright, sweetheart, you were worried, I don't blame you for that," She murmured to him, running her hand up and down his back, placing a kiss on his collarbone, her nails grazing over his shirt to soothe him. She had been slightly hurt by being brushed off like that, but she knew Darius had been upset. Emilia stayed near him, holding him close.
"I love you, too. I'm glad she's going to be okay," Emilia said softly to him, glad to have him near. She could imagine his nerves were still on edge. She would be too if it were her horse.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #838b74 solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]the dreams in which i'm dying Darius was just exhausted by everything that had happened today. It was overwhelming, and he didn’t do so well with anything that was sprung on him last minute. He didn’t like situations where he wasn’t fully in control, and what had happened with Night had been one of those situations. Running a hand through his hair, he leaned back against the stall wall, closing his eyes. He just wanted to turn back the clock and do everything a whole lot differently. Not run Night in the morning work out’s and then call out the vet. That was just two things that may have made all the difference. One thing he could be grateful for was that Night didn’t have to undergo a colic op and that the impaction would pretty much just clear itself out with everything they gave the black filly.
Taking a deep breath, he opened his eyes to look at Emilia. Can we please go home? he asked her, expression pleading. He was tired, he was stressed and all that he wanted to do was fall into his bed and sleep for a week. It had been one of the longest days that he had in a while, and he had forgotten how much they took out of him, especially in his state of mind at the current moment. He had already gone through one episode today, and he wasn’t about to go through another.
He stood up slowly, having decided to cancel the following morning’s work out’s, just for the sake of sleeping late and allowing his mind some time to recover before the next onslaught of stresses came. Being in the race business, he knew that there were a lot of things that he couldn’t control, but the things he could, he made sure that he did. Night’s colic just proved to him that he couldn’t control everything in his life. Unlocking the car, he gave the keys to Emilia with a faint smile. She would probably be the best person for the drive back, knowing that he would fall asleep at the wheel if he had the chance. I love you, he said again, giving her a smile as he got into the passenger side.

It was no secret that they were both exhausted, but just by looking in his eyes, Emilia could easily tell just how much this whole endeavor had drained Darius. As they walked out of the barn, Emilia laid a gentle hand on her other half's lower back in a loving, affectionate and supportive manner. She was by far relieved that it seemed as though Night would be okay. She too loved the filly, and knew it would cause Darius so much devastation and heartbreak if they had lost her. They had gotten good news from the vet regarding Night's recovery, but she still had the block to pass. They would keep an eye on her and make sure she recovered fully before getting her back on schedule for training.
When they got out to the car, Emilia had been prepared to insist Darius let her drive, not wanting him to have to focus on that when he had just endured everything tonight. When he handed her the keys, Emilia smiled, "Love you too," she murmured, going to the driver's side door and got in. She was grateful that at least Night was in the clear for the time being. It would bring them; especially Darius some peace of mind for now. He needed sleep and Emilia just wanted to get him home and let him. As they drove, Emilia reached over lightly, laying her hand over Darius' own and squeezed it gently, offering him a soft, reassuring smile.
