Sitting on the couch in her and Finn’s apartment, she rested a hand on the baby bump that was slowly forming. Winter had come to Addison, and despite everything, she was slowly beginning to realise that time had flown and the birth of their daughter was going to happen soon. Seven months into her pregnancy, she was immersing herself in knowledge and what to expect, though like her grandmother had said, nothing ever prepares you for being a mother. Nicky was soon starting to learn that, even with all the books she had bought, she still felt unprepared. She didn’t have any siblings, and when she did go and visit family, she was usually with horses, or having something to do with the animals there.
One thing Nicky could say was that the nursery was finished. It hadn’t taken long, and there was nothing super fancy, but she was happy, content and it looked cheerful every time she walked into it. Smiling happily, she stretched out lazily and reached for her cup of tea. She remembered when she had told her father and grandparents that she was expecting. Her grandparents were thrilled to know that they were becoming great-grandparents and her father wasn’t happy, but he trusted Finn to look after her and their daughter.
She had been elated when the doctor had told them that they were having a girl, and Nicky had been thinking of names. Nicky didn’t quite know though what she would like to name their daughter, but she did know one thing. Even though they didn’t have a lot of money, their daughter would grow up in a loving family.
Nicky paged through one of the pregnancy magazines that she had in her possession, and though they helped prepare her for what was to come, she still didn't feel completely ready to be a mother. This was one of those times that she just wanted her own mother to be around, to offer advice and listen to her fears. More than once she had thought to tell Finn that they should just give up their daughter for adoption, but then she looked at Finn and realised that he was going to be a great father. Already he was so supportive of her, and Nicky just brushed away the thoughts

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #952935 solid 10px; width: 399px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]and i know it's hard but we'll get through this i know It felt slightly surreal that in only two months or so, Finn was officially going to be a father. It still only felt like yesterday that Nicky had actually told him that she was pregnant, and everything since then had just seemed to go by in a huge rush. He had graduated, and now he was working for a major company, thankfully it hadn’t taken him long to find a job with the degree he had gotten, because he doubted that the wage he had been getting as a barista would have covered the cost of living and a baby on top of it, especially since Nic couldn’t exactly work right now. At least they had both had savings as well, so it hadn’t been too much of a worry, they would have had enough until he had managed to find work.
Working a proper nine to five job had been a little strange to get used to at first, but he had settled into it fairly well, and he was enjoying it so far, which was also a bonus. Not that he would have quit if he wasn’t, he definitely couldn’t afford that. And he definitely had weekends off, which was even better, when before his roster would be all over the place. So having evenings and weekends to spend at home was great, and he knew it would definitely be helpful when their daughter eventually did arrive.
He had finished work for the day, and had headed back to their apartment, glad that the size of Addison meant that commute to and from work didn’t take an incredibly long time, yawning tiredly when he pulled his apartment keys out when he arrived at the door, unlocking it and walking in, locking the door behind him again and dropping his keys onto the small table just inside the door. Smiling as he saw her sitting on the couch, he walked over, lowering his long, lanky frame down beside her, reaching over to give her a kiss on the cheek once he had seated himself.
“How are my two favourite girls doing today?”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #7d292c solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and it's me and you and we're shakin the ground Nicky couldn't help but grin when she heard the front door open, knowing that Finn was home and that the few hours that she had been alone were over and done with. It had been relatively easy for Finn to find a job in Addison, and though it was taking some getting used to that he was now working a solid schedule and not random times of the day, she was glad that they now had whole weekends to themselves. Smiling at his exhausted expression, she moved from her position and curled up close to him.
We're doing just great. She's been really active today, she said, taking his hand as the baby started kicking again. It was a fantastic thing to be feeling, and Nicky could only grin as she felt it. When she had first found out that she was pregnant, it was as if some sort of parallel universe had swallowed her whole, but in a way, she was ready to become a mother. She had Finn's support in everything, and without that, she also knew that she wouldn't have been able to this. He was one of a kind, and she valued having him in her life. How was work? she asked, repositioning herself so that she was in a more comfortable position next to him.
Being pregnant was definitely one of those things that had it's advantages and disadvantages, but she wouldn't exchange them for anything. So maybe she couldn't see her feet, or shaving her legs had become difficult, but she was about to give birth to a baby, Finn's baby, and she felt as if life was finally working out for her. She would still have wanted her mother around, show her what was the best way to do everything, but when their daughter was born, Nicky was going to have to rely on the knowledge that she had learned through books and the internet.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #952935 solid 10px; width: 399px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]and i know it's hard but we'll get through this i know Finn smiled to himself when Nicky moved over towards him on the couch, moving his arms so that she could lean back against him, gently placing them around her once she had settled, one hand resting gently on her pregnant stomach, letting her take hold of the other one, curling his fingers through hers. He didn’t regret following her to America at all, as much as he missed Australia, because if he hadn’t he wouldn’t have all of this now, and now he couldn’t imagine life any differently. He had taken a chance, and while not all of it had gone to plan… they hadn’t planned on being parents any time soon until she had found out that she was pregnant… but that was almost why it felt so perfect anyway.
He chuckled as she spoke, feeling the baby kicking through where his hand sat on her stomach, almost as if on cue after what she had said. “I have the feeling that she’s going to be just as active when she comes out as she is in there,” he answered, grinning as he spoke. Well, it wouldn’t be surprising, what with his penchant for not being able to sit still for incredibly long – unless he was intensely focused on something – and Nicky wasn’t exactly the stillest person on the planet, she was a jockey after all and he knew how active she was normally.
“Work was good… not particularly interesting today but good anyway,” he replied. As long as nothing went wrong then it was a good day at work, as far as he was concerned, even if most of it was spent sitting around doing the same thing all day. It was better than nothing, after all, and it was a job he generally enjoyed. He glanced at the clock on the wall, checking what time it was, before glancing back to her. “I’m starved… anything in particular you want for dinner?” he asked.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #7d292c solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and it's me and you and we're shakin the ground Nicky loved these moments with Finn. The ones where they just spent a few minutes shutting out the world, and allowing time to have no effect on their lives. The ones where they would just talk about their day, and where they wouldn’t have to worry about what lay in the outside world. That was all they needed to do. Nicky knew that Finn was unable to sit down longer than a few moments, and although she could spend longer moments of not having to move, she pretty much loved being active as well. It was no wonder their daughter was having the time of her life in Nicky’s womb. Too bad it didn’t really help on the bladder control front.
I think she get’s that mostly from her dad, Nicky teased Finn, kissing his jaw gently. Nothing had really ever just gone to plan. If it had on the other, and she had still somehow managed to fall pregnant, then she wouldn’t have changed anything in her life. There was something about knowing that you and the person you loved had created another life form, and that was the most reassuring part of all. Nicky couldn’t have asked for a better friend and boyfriend through this entire pregnancy. Now that it was drawing to a close, she was even more thankful for him. I’m glad you had a good day, she said truthfully, shifting slightly so that she could get comfortable.
The thought about food made her automatically feel full. She had indulged some of her cravings, and was eating as healthy as possible so that she wouldn’t be carrying baby pounds for a long while, not that she could afford them. She would take maybe another year off from racing and then get back into the swing of things, see if there was space for her on decent mounts. She knew she would go back to Danny Jenner and Casey, maybe Darius if he had the horses for her, but nothing was ever for certain, especially in something like horse racing.
I’m not sure. Maybe something light? I’m not really all that hungry, she answered with an apologetic smile, knowing that she wasn’t really helping him decide. It seemed that their daughter had also started to settle down for a few moments, for which Nicky was extremely grateful.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #952935 solid 10px; width: 399px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]and i know it's hard but we'll get through this i know It was nice to come home and just sit here with her for a while, it was nice to have something simple where they didn’t have to worry about work or money or what was going to happen when their daughter finally arrived in a few short months’ time. They had been doing well for themselves so far, thankfully, he had worried at first that they wouldn’t be able to sustain themselves plus a baby but it had seemed to not be such a problem, luckily they were both the sort of people who had good heads on their shoulders and were smart when it came to their finances, so it was a lot less stressful than he had originally thought it was going to be.
He chuckled when she said that she was fairly sure that their daughter had gotten how active she was from him, grinning a little. “Well, at least there isn’t two of her in there… I hate to think of how Iain and I were,” he answered, very vaguely thinking of his mother then. He didn’t think of her often, but then again she had never really had a reason to… or at least, he never really wanted to, even if it was just over small things like this. She had left, of her own free will, instead of getting help, so a part of him didn’t even register that he had even had a mother at some point in his life.
“That works for me,” Finn replied, reaching down to give her a quick kiss before moving to get up to go into the kitchen, stretching slightly and groaning a little before he stood up, not really feeling like moving right now but he was hungry and food wasn’t going to go and make itself, after all. He was definitely feeling a lot hungrier than she was so he would probably end up making extra of whatever for himself… but then again that was nothing new, he was like a bottomless pit most of the time, but he was also male so it was pretty typical.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #7d292c solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and it's me and you and we're shakin the ground Nicky could only grin at his comment about the baby’s activity coming from him. She was fine with being pregnant with one baby, but if she had found out that she had been carrying twins or even more, she would probably have an adverse reaction to it all, and still be nervously twitching about raising two or more children. Even though they had to be budgeting carefully for the next coming months, Nicky couldn’t think of a better situation. She would probably only start racing again when their daughter was old enough to go to day care, but jockeying was also one of those things where she would be up before Finn and then back by the time he needed to go to work, or if she couldn’t, then their daughter would be fine for an hour or so in day care.
Following Finn to the kitchen, she grumbled slightly as she realised how out of proportion she felt. The baby bump seemed to be the majority of her, and then her legs and arms came as well. It was just extremely annoying, and if she spent too much time on her feet, her feet started to hurt. If she lay down, then it wasn’t long before some or other muscle group started cramping. She just couldn’t win, but soon she would have a beautiful daughter to show for it. That was all that got her through the day, the thought of having their daughter sleeping in her nursery, and Nicky finally being back in proportion.
You know, we haven’t thought about names for our daughter yet, she commented, sitting down in one of the bar stools in the kitchen, watching him as he started to make dinner. She hadn’t thought about names as such yet, and the sites that she had browsed hadn’t really struck any fancy with her. They just didn’t sound right. They were either just too common or unpronounceable. It needed to be just right, and that wasn’t what she had found yet. Nicky didn’t think that she was being too fussy, but at least her mother had known what to call her from the beginning. Nicky, on the other hand, didn’t have a clue.

If his dad could raise twin boys on his own for that long he was fairly sure that he could handle looking after one child for a few days.
Walking into the kitchen, he went to the fridge, opening it and reaching in to grab a couple of things out to make something for dinner, and then the cupboard once he had placed everything he pulled out onto the bench until he was ready to use them, looking over at her when she went to sit on one of the bar stools sitting in the kitchen. It was still a little strange, seeing her pregnant at times… even though at least it had been a gradual thing and he’d had a fair while to get used to it, and he wasn’t quite sure how she did it… he doubted that he would be able to carry a kid around in him for nine months if he could.
Starting on preparing the food, he looked over at her again when she said that they hadn’t thought of any names for their daughter yet… she was right, they hadn’t really discussed that part yet. “No, we haven’t… we probably should start thinking though, because she’s going to need one when she comes out,” he replied.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #7d292c solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and it's me and you and we're shakin the ground Nicky gave a light laugh at his comment, nodding in agreement. She would, but my dad told me that they called me baby for two weeks because they couldn't decide on a name. Every time they talked about it, it seemed like that was going to be the one thing they would get a divorce over, she told him, knowing that at least somewhere in their baby's name, that she would want her mothers name. It just felt right to have it like that, but either way she would be happy.
I've been looking at names since we found out it was a she, but none of them seem to fit, she told Finn. Her moods had been all over the place lately, and it wasn't as if she didn't expect that, but it was becoming a pain in the backside as she didn't know what to expect. The whole situation of her not seeing her feet, or her back aching was just lousy, and getting old really fast. Even though they could expect very little sleep or anything really when their daughter was here, it was all she actually wanted. To hold their baby in her arms and officially be called a mother.
Nicky also knew that Finn hadn't grown up with a mother, but this was different. This was their child, one that would be loved, no matter what the circumstances. Nicky was young, but she was slowly starting to feel ready to be a mother. The thought of her being a mother was also scaring her. She didn't expect to find someone she loved as much as she loved Finn, nor did she expect 9 months ago to end up pregnant.

As far as what they named their daughter, he was fairly relaxed about it… about the one big thing he did want was his surname in there somewhere, but that was a pretty natural thing to want. Especially seeing as though his mother’s name wasn’t something he really wanted incorporated into the thing… his grandmother’s, maybe, but otherwise that was the one thing he wanted.
“Well, if you want, after we eat we can always spend a bit of time looking up names together. It might help us come up with something,” he suggested, figuring that they probably had a better chance of actually coming up with a name for their daughter if they looked for one together rather than just doing their own separate thing… not that he had really done all that much looking himself, but to be fair the whole new job thing had taken up a fair bit of his attention, because the last thing he had needed right then was to half arse it and lose it, all things considering. But since that had all settled in nicely it felt like he could relax a lot more about it all, and focus more on other things as well.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #7d292c solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]and it's me and you and we're shakin the ground Nicky smiled at him, knowing that despite everything, they would probably come up with a name that they both liked. It would definitely be easier to do it together, seeing as they would find something that they liked together. Sounds good, she said, smiling at him. Nicky knew that at some stage, a couple of years down the line, she wouldn’t mind getting married, but at the moment she was content with the relationship down the line. As their daughter started the familiar dancing act on her bladder, Nicky silently got up and went to the bathroom. There were some perks, but the constant needing to use a toilet was getting to her. Trips to do the grocery were often planned around the distances to the nearest bathroom, but all the negatives would definitely all be cancelled out once she held their daughter in her arms.
Going back to the kitchen, she settled back on the bar stool, the comfort of before long gone. She shifted in the chair, eventually settling into a comfortable position. The one relief was that their daughter had stopped carrying on like she was the next world class soccer player, and had settled. It like she was carrying a 20 pound football in her stomach, and she tried not to complain too much about what she was feeling. Finn tried to be understanding, but he didn’t know what it was like to be pregnant. To Nicky she only hoped that it wouldn’t happen again for a few years. Pregnancy was one of those experiences, albeit wonderful, she didn’t want to have to repeat it again for a while. A very, good long while.
