It was almost nine o' clock at night but for whatever reason Curtis was craving caffeine. He didn't even want to know what cup he was on now but he was sure he was past six by now. He had been literally sitting in his basement in front of a mixer table playing with one of his recent projects and couldn't for the life of him get it to sound right. He didn't even bother doing his hair, which now fell in a Doctor Who Tenth Doctor style and he really couldn't care less. With the leash of his cream coloured pit bull in hand, Curtis got out of his gun metal grey GT and shut the door after waiting for the dog to get out.
"Bonesy, Bones--Bonesheel--!" Curtis' voice became a strained growl in effort as the two year old male pit bull charged out like a Sherman tank and Curtis found himself scuffling after the dog as he tried to find some anchorage in planting his feet to keep him from getting dragged off, resulting in almost getting his arm yanked out of its socket. He loved that dog with all his heart but Curtis swore he was going to get the both of them run over at one point or another. Doctor Sawbones, as the dog was called, stopped in his tracks, turning his amber gaze up at Curtis with his tail wagging and Curtis knew he couldn't be too annoyed with him. When he came to the coffee shop he seemed to frequent, Curtis chuckled, ruffling the canine's ears.
"You're a royal pain, you know that?" He muttered. Bones blinked at him. [b"You do, don't you? Yeah, you totally do. Stay." [/b] Curtis kept Bones tied, making sure the leash wasn't attached to the prong collar; which didn't even seem to faze Bones in the first place, but attached to the actual nylon collar he wore. Walking inside to get his coffee, Curtis waited in line, glancing over his shoulder to make sure his dog was okay periodically. He'd probably sit outside with the cream colored dog, have a cigarette, drink his coffee, go over chords then go home and hit the sack. He was already running off of only four hours of sleep anyway. He knew this wasn't going to end well one way or another, but it was worth the time and money spent.[/blockquote]

It was when the streetlights provided minimal light and the people didn't care. It was when she could walk the streets and just not care any more if people saw her or not. There was nothing that she could do than just wait for the bruises to disappear, the swelling subside and then stitches to dissolve. It had been a few days since she had escaped Morde, a few days since he had threatened to kill her and a few days since she had lost the baby she was carrying. Brett's baby. The last true link that she had to the one person she thought would never leave.
It had been a lie though. He did leave. He did abandon her when she needed him the most and she would never be able to forgive him. She had been crying out for help since she had seen Morde's violent side. All she had been for him was something he could use to fuck, nothing more and nothing less. An object, not a person, and he had controlled her absolutely. Michaela had been mentally cursing herself for ages now, but she didn't know what she could do. The few days she had taken off work were coming to a close, and soon she would have to face the harsh reality of the real world.
Her body ached, knowing that walking to the coffee shop this late at night was not a good idea. The place wasn't far from where she lived, but every time something moved, she thought that it would be Morde, coming to fulfil his promise of murdering her. Her slight frame shook, a hand resting on her abdomen as if the baby was still growing inside of her. No. She would have to find a way to carry on with her life, move on from the experience she had. Slipping into the coffee shop, she moved off her hoodie and quietly ordered a large latte, waiting for the order and then escaping to a seat in the corner.
Her hands shook as she held the mug, the warmth seeping into her body. It was freezing outside, but she had daunted the cold in nothing more in a old hoodie and jeans with sneakers. Her cheeks were pinched from the cold and her hair was slightly wet. Everything about her was just old, as if she had aged a hundred years in more than a few days.
As Michaela sipped her coffee, she winced as the stitches inside her mouth stung, as her broken lip stung. She more bruises than anything else, but she also had heartache and loss building inside of her. A lone tear ran down her cheek, and she brushed it away quickly, holding back a hiss as she brushed too hard over her blackened eye.

Curtis glanced over absently when the door to the coffee shop opened and at first, he just saw an attractive blonde woman in a hoody come in. It wasn't until she got closer that he saw a bruised, emotionally broken young woman; appearing shaken over what happened.
For whatever reason, even though Curtis had repressed a time in his past deep in the furthest corner of his psyche, the bruises and her general demeanor, how shaken and damaged she seemed by it brought it back and Curtis felt for a moment like he had been hit by a bag of bricks. He recognised it anywhere. The poor girl. Nobody should have to ever go through something like that and he knew he didn't have the slightest idea of what must have happened to her, but it still turned his stomach thinking back on it.
Jesus, relax, He chided himself mentally and averted his gaze for a moment, clearing his throat as she went to go sit down. In a time period of about eighteen seconds he went from fighting the flight instinct of just wanting to get the hell out of there, away from any sort of memory it brought back to wanting to know her. What the hell was he going to do, though? "Hey, looks like someone beat the crap out of you, wanna talk to someone who can relate?" Yeah, that would go over really well. When his coffee came up to the counter, Curtis turned to the barista, realizing he still had Bones out there.
"Hey, dude, listen," Curtis began, leaning on the counter so he didn't end up raising his voice above the chatter in the cafe. "I know dogs aren't allowed inside here, but mine's out there freezing to death. If I promise that he won't cause any sort of disturbance, can I bring him in? Just this once."
The barista hesitated. "I don't think so, law says dogs can't come in here. Which one is yours?"
"The pit bull out front."
"Dude, if I say yes, I'm going to get fired. He's a pit bull."
"I know he's a pit bull, but I guarantee you, there is not a mean bone in that dog's body." Curtis said. "Come on, man, just this once."
The barista sighed. "Fine, but keep him out sight from other people, and just this once."
Curtis thanked him sincerely, and with his paper coffee cup in hand, went outside to bring Bones in. The dog shook repeatedly with a a jingle of his tags, and Curtis kept him at his side as he moved to the farther corner of the room; unintentionally near where the blonde had gone. When he sat down, Curtis snapped his fingers and signaled the dog to lie under his table. Bones obliged, and while Curtis sat down, he felt something brush under the chair and looked down, mortified to see Bones soldier-crawling toward the girl's chair, his tail sweeping rapidly like a whip over the floor, trying to get as much leverage from the leash as he could.
"Bones.. Bones.." Curtis hissed as Bones' tongue started trying to flap at the girl's hand or whatever part of her clothing he could reach, ever the affectionate dog. Curtis shot her an apologetic look. "I'm so sorry. He's friendly, I promise." He said, still trying to pull the dog back over so he wouldn't disturb her.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #e8c79a solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]such a beautiful lie to believe in Michaela sat with the coffee between her hands, trying to absorb as much of the heat into her body as the moisture sank through the hoodie and into her skin. This cold was nothing that compared to what Morde had done to her, but after being looked at by a doctor and Lena, she was pretty much given the all clear in the sense that she was fine physically. Mentally on the other hand was a lot different. Her trust had been broken completely, she thought that there were no good men in the world that would want her for her. No, the ones that wanted her were the ones that just wanted sex. She blew it with Brett when she didn’t phone him. He was one of the good ones, the one she should have spent the rest of her life with, but he had gone. When she had gone to his apartment, he hadn’t been there, everything packed up.
A wet lick at her hand startled her, causing her to jump slightly until she saw the pit bull licking her fingers rather enthusiastically. For the first time in a long while, Michaela smiled, and leaned down slightly, wincing as her strapped ribs protested at the movement. Petting the dog, she looked up when a man’s voice started apologising. It’s okay. He seems friendly, so I don’t mind, she murmured, immediately regretting to trying to a way out of talking. From her seat, she didn’t which way would be the easiest way to just run, but she tried to calm herself. Her heart thumped rapidly, and her eyes were probably filled with panic.
This man, whoever he was, seemed friendly enough, and there were a lot of other people in Vintage Brew should anything happen. Michaela didn’t know when she had become such a wreck. Every thought was now filled with fight or flight, and she knew that she wasn’t strong enough to put up a fight. What she had endured with Morde had almost killed her, and it had killed someone. It had taken the life of her unborn child. Michaela would never forgive herself for that, and nor could she. She had knowingly endangered her child’s life before he or she had even been born. Great start in the mother points category. Except now, she realised how much she wanted a child. To be a mother.

Watching the woman begin petting Bones, who was in seventh heaven, nearly flipping himself over onto his back in Curtis' grip, Curtis offered a light smile, letting go of the collar but still had a hold on his leash, hearing her words. Though looking up at her, Curtis could immediately recognize the deep rooted emotion that was evident in her face. She's scared. Curtis couldn't tell what had happened to this girl, but he wanted to make her feel as at ease as possible.
"Well, I think you just made a friend for life out of him." Curtis said with a light smile. She was beautiful, there was no question, but it looked like someone had broken her emotionally. Curtis knew the feeling, but he tried to block it out as much as possible. In retrospect, it was probably doing more damage than good. But having gone through trauma like that once, Curtis had no desire to relive it.
"I'm Curtis. Mister Suck Up at your feet is Dr. Sawbones," Curtis said, offering an introduction with a smile, eyes kind, having no desire to do anything but get to know her. A bit better.

She didn’t have many of those, but the ones she did have were the ones she counted on the most. It had been Lena who had helped her after Morde had assaulted her, allowed her to stay there for a few days, because with Charlie living there as well, it had been the safest place for her to stay. She shuddered lightly, moving her chair back a few inches, probably just looking like she was giving herself space to pet the dog, but in actual fact she was giving herself space just to feel like she wasn’t trapped.
I’m Michaela Winters. Pleasure to meet you Curtis, she said softly, giving him a slight smile. He wasn’t one of the usual types she saw around Addison, but despite his appearance, he seemed like a friendly sort of person. It was rare that she came across that in strangers lately, but she couldn’t help but feel that right now, she just wanted to be on her own. No relationships, no friends, just her and her thoughts where she could be able to heal herself as best she could.
Sitting up slowly, she hid a wince as her ribs protested, a hand touch the strapping through her hoodie for a fleeting moment. Taking a sip of her coffee, she didn’t look at him directly, trying her best to think of a conversation starter. So, I haven’t seen you around before. Are you new to town? she asked, fighting that panicked urge again as she spoke. She was thankful for one thing and that was he hadn’t asked her about her bruises that were so clear to see.
Michaela knew the looks she got when she actually appeared in public in the last couple of days, trying her best to make sure that it wasn’t too often. She had taken a few days off from work, knowing that high school teenagers wouldn’t bother with manners and would pester her with questions. That was the only con about being a teacher, the endless, sometimes completely pointless questions.
