In the middle of winter, Mikael had found the job unpleasant, especially handling the ice. For the last few months he had immersed himself in university work, his horses and competing, taking his mind off everything that had happened. He hadn’t heard from Kurt in the last few months, not since their big fall out, and he missed the curly headed male. He had withdrawn back into his shell, avoiding most of the people that he had come to know. His brother naturally worried about him, but Mikael was fine. He knew that maybe their breakup was for the best, but that hadn’t stopped the tears or the extreme pain.
He had loved Kurt with everything that he possessed. Kurt had been the one that had been at his side during his battle with cancer, during stressful exams and late nights when he couldn’t sleep. For almost two years he had been with Kurt, but it had all come to Kurt moving out and ignoring him. Leaning against Ace’s side, Mikael watched time pass, unsure of how to handle the pain inside of him. This was different to when he had cancer. The pain then had been lessened by the use of morphine, everything then blurring to a dull sense of the reality. This pain was sharp, intense, and unable to be removed. He had tried most things. From alcohol to adrenaline providing activities, nothing had worked.
The only time when he forgot about Kurt was when he was riding, his mind totally focussed on the horse. Except now his time riding had been cut short when Ace had pulled a tendon a week ago. It had been an accident and now he was unable to compete or ride the gelding for a few weeks. Not that it was going to set him back horribly, but he would miss the gelding’s spunk. You big goof, he murmured fondly, petting the gelding as he removed the foreleg from the bucket and kneeled down to wrap it.

"Zach, you'd better behave. No stunts our second day here, understand?" Kayla spoke sternly to the large white and brown pitbull sitting angelically at her feet, his tail going nonstop in the fine snow. Smiling she patted his head as he rose from his haunches, an undeniable doggy grin spread across his face. "Alright, c'mon ill bet Sunny will be happy to see us." She told him as she set off from the truck, eager to get to the stallion waiting in the barn. They got into town late last night and she hadn't had the energy to do much more than a quick lunging after unloading and unhitching the trailer. He'd be a real spitfire today.
As if in response the well muscled stallion let loose a loud cry as he heard his humans footsteps coming into the barn. Nearby, a mare was first to answer and he replied with an excited squeal, banging the stall door with his chest. "Hey cut it out!" Kayla reprimanded him, laughing as his big head turned to her as if innocently asking "who, me?". It was then that she saw the young man wrapping a beautiful bay just as Zach took off towards them. "Oh come on what about our talk?! Get back here!!", she cried after him, grabbing her right knee when the pain shot through her. She limped quickly after him; she knew all he would do was lick him but most found the bulging muscled pitt scary. She began her apology, "I'm so sorry he's usually not like this."

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: f9f9f9; border: #4c7b8f solid 10px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]here we are, we've just begun Mikael stood up once he had wrapped Ace’s leg, petting the gelding and feeding him a sugar cube or two. The horse seemed restless, moving about in the cross ties and nostrils flaring. Mikael couldn’t see the cause for distraction, so he tried to soothe his horse as best he could. It wasn’t until a large pit bull came bounding the barn aisle that Mikael could see why Ace had been restless. The gelding had been a rescue when Mikael had found, severely undernourished and abused. Ace’s previous owners had owned various large dogs that had bitten the horses on the farm, and no matter how many times Mikael tried to reintroduce him to dogs, nothing had warmed the gelding to him.
The owner was already apologising, but Mikael had a feeling that she would be apologising a whole lot more if Beth, the owner of the farm, caught her with a dog in the barn. No dogs are allowed in the barn, he said almost mechanically. This was almost as funny as when there had been a girl trying to lead out two ponies without halters, but still, some horses, like his Ace, did not appreciate having a dog underneath their noses, and he could see the gelding panicking. Barn rules. So, unless you want Beth to haul you over the coals, I suggest that you tie him up outside, Mikael managed a small smile.
Working as a stable hand had made him privy to some of the funnier things that happened, but Beth was strict on her rules, and usually gave anyone a chewing out if she caught them, which was not a pretty sight to see.
