personality » A cheerful, upbeat man mostly, he is respected in his community as a good man, a good Muslim. He helps out with various charitable causes in his area and gets on well with most people, regardless of their class. He is also fiercely loyal to his faith and his family, going to great lengths to protect them from harm. Tanak is the product of his upbringing. The eldest son in a devout Islamic family, headed by a strict and occasionally abusive father – as a result, his actions sometimes go to the extreme. As he himself could not have children, his determination that his other family members are on the straight and narrow was strengthened. He has something of a temper when he feels people are snubbing or mocking him and when his family stray. In Western terms he is undoubtedly racist, however, by his community’s standards he is unusually liberal, he dislikes his family colluding with [Americans and Europeans] however he treats those who live nearby and has no objection to them living their lives as they please, as long as they do not attempt to 'sully' the mind or body of his kin.
WE'LL TAKE CONTROL OF THE WORLD,
appearance » Tanak is of a slim but muscular build, standing not that tall, at 5' 9¾" – he keeps in shape, a welterweight boxing champion at college, he now helps train local kids. A healthy diet, free from alcohol and drug use (other than the occasional coffee), he is pretty much in mint condition. His face is broader than his sister’s with dark curling hair – usually kept reasonably short - eyes a shade darker than most of the family’s, rounder in shape and less delicate. His eyelashes are short, but dark and thick. He dresses in a modern fashion, but is unassuming about it, trying to follow traditional code with more modern clothing. His shirts are always long sleeved and his trousers end just above the ankle – not a fashion statement, simply an obscure rule that a garment should not hang below the ankle which he follows. His beard is kept short and neat.

life history » Tanak grew up in Lahore, Pakistan along with his family. They lived in an average bungalow type house in the outskirts of the city, with four bedrooms and a small outdoor area which was fenced off. His dad was a pencil pusher type and his mother housewife as were nearly all women living in Lahore at the time. Tanak lived quite happily with her sisters and brothers though his relationship with his father was sometimes strained, failures met with harsh beatings.
He did well in his studies, because of or despite the beatings, and successfully applied to medical school at nineteen. When he was twenty-three, still in training, his family made a sudden relocation to Sri Lanka. He, however, remained in Pakistan to continue his studies.
When his sister disappeared that same year, he took a break from his course to hunt for his sister. After a month of trying and failing, he left the task to his younger, more level headed brother and returned to his course. He completed his medical training the same year that he married Aasia, aged twenty-six. He joined a practise not far from their home and once they were financially sure, they tried for children. After three years of abject failure, he finally gave Aasia a fertility test – to his dismay, she was not the one with fertility issues – upon realising that he could not have children through natural means, he moved himself and his wife closer to the rest of his family, where he could be an uncle and help with their upbringing and morality. Shortly after moving to Sri Lanka, he stalked his younger brother to the end of the garden during a get-together where he was having a hushed phone conversation in rapid English – clearly trying to avoid being overheard by every means possible. He missed most of what was being said – his English was good, but he couldn’t follow it so fast – but caught the words ‘Texas’, ‘Mya’ and a few other phrases that made it clear that his younger brother had lied when he said he couldn’t find their sister.
He continued his work as a doctor, tracking his sister down as a side project. He found some people over the internet, in Texas, who agreed to aid him in his search. For a few years his searches proved fruitless, then a friend who had been visiting his sister in a large Texan town, Addison, informed him that his sister’s vet was a woman named “Namya Sharma”, who seemed to match the description of Tan’s sister. Tanak, without telling any other family member, for fear they – like Viv – were aiding his sister in her sin, why he was doing it, took indefinite leave from the practise he worked in, promoted his assistant in the boxing club to interim coach and said his goodbyes to the kids in the area. Never one for material belongings, Tanak packed light. His three favourite short stories, a few t-shirts and sets of trousers and a prayer mat were carefully packed then he left for Addison.
Though he was relatively certain his sister wouldn’t recognise him if he happened to be momentarily spotted, for the week he spent ‘tracking’ her – as he put it – he wore glasses and allowed his beard, flecked with grey already and adding age, and hair to be a little longer than usual.
